What is it like to live in New Zealand?
I guess this has been the most asked question for me in the past few months. Before coming here, I had heaps of expectations not only from New Zealand but also from myself. I wanted to learn and explore. Not only the academic world but also the outside world.
Now, it has been four months. A lot has happened as I live in NZ. A world full of exotic people, strange happenings and different landscapes. These are the main similarities and differences (from what I have observed) from in living in the Philippines to living hereβ¦
1. Cold Weather
Coming from a country with tropical climate, the weather was just too much for me. On the first week, I was so sick and I really found it difficult to breathe the cold air (felt like I was inside a fridge or something). I came in summertime.
2. Nice People
New Zealand does not disappoint when it comes to nice people. They are very friendly like us (Pinoys). However, a word of warning, It does not mean that everyone will be nice to you. I received this advice from a Kiwi friend before I left the Philippines but I did not think about it that much until I got my heart broken when I had a terrible encounter with a rude bus driver. :(
3. Independence
With great power comes great responsibility. As a person seeks freedom, one must accept the responsibilities that entails that privilege. Kiwis (New Zealanders) are very independent. They bag their own groceries, fill their own car tanks and do heaps of stuff on their own. I kind of like that, but to some extent, Iβd like to have some dependence on someone, too.
4. Gorgeous landscapes and sceneries
This country is very beautiful. That was an understatement.
5. Culture and spirituality
This is my favorite! I just love how Kiwis celebrate the Maori (their indigenous) culture. The very first day at uni, we had a ceremony called powhiri and it was where the Maoris accepted us in New Zealand. The Maori chief told us that their ancestors acknowledge the setting of our foot in this land, on behalf of our ancestors. It was like a collision of two ancient cultures and I strongly felt a connection with them. I had even considered enrolling in a Maori language course.

Lastly, despite the increasing percentage of non-Christians, I am amazed of the Christian movement here in NZ. Their genuine desire to help Christians from all over the world and their heart for people are very encouraging. My prayer is that the Lord continuously bless this country not only with material riches but also prosper it spiritually. Because in the end, it is what really mattersβ¦

Talorβs MMA fight in North Shore
My first time to watch an MMA fight live. There was a lot of blood. I wanted to stop the fight because they were both hurt, but I guess thatβs the reason why theyβre there. It really takes a lot of courage to be in this sport.

All-nighters
There is a very specific window of opportunity (from 10:30pm-2am) for my brain to absorb more stuff than usual. Problem is, it is also during this time that my eyes keep shutting because of extreme tiredness....

A Poem for my Tatang
From my little feet I could feel, The soil where my grandfather often kneels The land cultivated by tears and blood So that the produce will often flood Now that as these feet grew bigger I could not get any sadder For the land that once prospered Has now been left unbotheredβ¦
