I’ve played GTH so many times and each time my dislike for Charlotte Thornton grows
I am listening
okay so
1st of all I think the mansion is haunted. Harper did portray some of the hauntings like the wall that bulges out in the second floor. Her interaction with the furnace foreshadows the CO explanation. And maybe she kills Nancy if she doesn’t agree to help Jessalyn. But other than that the house is really haunted. the CO explanation doesn’t cover why statues moves, coffins moved, and especially why Nancy would see ghosts in the burned down house where the party was supposed to be . There’s no CO there.
So if a ghost really exist, why? Why would Charlotte, who is supposed to be the sweetest person become some vengeful ghost? Rintaro’s quote about ghost being guilty remorse (or something like that) comes to mind. But Charlotte feels too real, too tangible. It’s a very visceral feeling.
I think Charlotte’s ghost exists because she regrets her own actions and behaviour. But what actions? Her treatment of Clara.
We know that Clara never felt a part of the family. And there are many theories as to why. Clara’s mother might have been cold and distant to Clara (beautifully paralleled with Clara and Jessalyn) but that doesn’t really explain why Clara would feel estranged from her relatives. But, generally speaking, a person feels ostracized because of the behaviour of those around them. Clara’s discomfort with her place in the family has to come from the family making it apparent that she is not wanted.
You could argue that Charlotte and Harper were the only two that accepted Clara and I think the game supports this, but that happiness was only while Clara’s mother was alive. When she died, Clara felt even more like an outsider. But it doesn’t make sense that Clara could have been so close to her aunt’s family only to be so insecure about her position in the family. How can she feel insecure unless they kept her at a distance? Charlotte might have been nice, but nice doesn’t make a person feel like they belong.
I think Charlotte was nice to Clara because she was expected to be nice. Charlotte had her own burden’s with dealing with the divided Thorntons and what not and she was determined to be and do good. As a result, she treated Clara with nothing more than expected cordiality, and I think Clara sensed this. The fact that it wasn’t genuine acceptance made her paranoid.
I think Charlotte included Clara in the will just so she didn’t feel cut out from the family but the thing that made me dislike her was cutting Clara out of the will. There’s not real reason given other than Charlotte feeling like Clara wasn’t cut out for the position because of her paranoia.
Do you understand what that means? Rather than confront Clara and help her, Charlotte decides to cut Clara out. An act that interestingly seems to align with the crueler side of the Thornton clan. She knew how insecure Clara felt, never bothered to help her with it, and actually thought of cutting Clara out. This ruthless behaviour is actually seen in Clara herself when she sends Harper to the mental asylum school place. Clara knew Harper needed help but instead estranged her permanently from the family. You can’t criticize Clara for her actions while ignoring Charlotte’s similar behaviour.
I’m not trying to excuse Clara’s behaviour or actions or her responsibility in Charlotte’s death. But I wholly disagree with the image of Charlotte as an innocent victim who did no harm.
