Winnie pouted as he spoke, knowing he had a point but refusing to accept it, untilâ he preferred it here? Were her ears deceiving her? âMaybe I didnât want you to come back. Did you ever think of that?â She furrowed her brows, well aware she was only pushing the envelope for the sake of pushing it, and not because she meant anything by it. The bell rang just then, and Winnie gave him a withering look. âYouâre going to make me late for class, Richard. Is that your M.O.?â She abruptly stopped, cutting herself off before she said something she knew sheâd truly regret. She took a big breath, centering herself by waving her hand in front of her own face. âIf you really mean all that,â she began, âthen prove it to me.â Off his look, she continued, âI donât know how, but youâll figure it out.â
Her sharp words struck him just a bit, but he held his firm composure, not letting it appear visible to her. Did she really hope that heâd stay permanently in Bristol? Had she been that upset with him that sheâd never wanted to see him again? Or had she moved on and truly had no care for him anymore? It seemed strange and unlike her, but his thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the bell. His eyebrows furrowed at her words. âM.O.?...No, whatever, go to class then, Iâm not standing in your way,â he snapped back with a harsher tone than heâd intended. But Rich softened slightly at her next words, though he wasnât sure what exactly she was expecting from him. â...Iâm gonna head to class too, so...see ya...â he mumbled awkwardly, then finally moved past her to head towards the direction of his first class. But after a few moments he noticed she was still trailing behind him, and he turned to glance over his shoulder in confusion. â...Are you following me?â He then turned a corner and headed into one of the classrooms - first period advanced chemistry lab.

It took everything inside of Winnie to not show Rich just how flustered she was by his response. She cocked her head to the side and looked at him quizzically; however, this expression was soon replaced by a tiny smirk. It was almost amusing- almost. She considered playing along, but decided against it. âDrop it, Rich,â she said, sounding a little colder than she had intended. âWhat are you doing back here? I- I mean- Iâm surprised to see you, sure, but that doesnât mean we have to make a scene out of it. Now if youâll excuse me, Iâm going to be late for class- and that will not reflect nicely on my permanent record. I can only imagine what yours is like.â
She turned on her heel and started to head down the hall, but felt a pang of guilt and spun around quickly, biting her lip. âYou know,â she said pointedly, giving him a look that surely would have incinerated a lesser being, âI really do think you owe me an explanation. And thatâs all Iâm going to say on the subject- all right?â
He wasnât sure why she seemed to be entertained by his continuation, but Rich kept a deadpanned expression, his eyes falling to the ground when she snapped at him. He felt a pang of guilt, but he kept trying to remind himself that he didnât need to feel guilty about something he couldnât exactly control. Well, he could have, but it wasnât that simple. He glanced back up at her as she spoke, remaining silent even as she took a jab at him, then watching as she started to walk away. Rich wasnât quite sure whether to follow her or let her be, but before he could decide, Winnie had paused in her tracks, facing him again. An explanation? What was there to say? But he knew her glare was demanding a response, so he cleared his throat, finally meeting her eyes again. â...I had to go home, to see my mates, my family,â Rich began, taking a careful step towards her direction. âItâd been a long time, and...it was the only time I could go. But...I found that, somehow, I prefer it here now, and I chose to stay, so...Iâm back now, to finish school, or...whatever.â He swallowed roughly, knowing there was more to his reasoning than that. But he wasnât quite ready to admit it. Surely he hadnât based his decision entirely on her...partially, maybe, but not entirely. âI told you I would come back...and I did...â

Winnie looked up with feigned surprise at the boy. She was good at this, or so sheâd thought. âHello,â she said flatly, giving him a suspicious glance. âUhâŚcan I help you?â She shook her head, wishing her heart would slow down for just a moment. She bit the inside of her cheek hard, until she could taste a bit of blood. Twist the knife, she thought. âThat is, do I know you?â The answer was obviousâ of course she did. Winnie dared venture to assume that she knew Rich better than anyone else in Hollywood Pointe, save for /maybe/ Eli. Maybe. But she had made a plan, and she had to stick to it. Winnie waved to an imaginary fan from the other end of the hall, and called âIâll be there in a minuteâ actually, you know what? Just go on without me! Iâm a little tied up here!â She turned her attention back to Rich. âSorry about thatâŚwhoever you are. You were saying?â
Rich had expected two different reactions, but neither of them seemed to correlate with what he was getting. She was almost expressionless, and her questions suddenly made it obvious just what she was doing. She was pretending she didnât know who he was. While his eyebrows furrowed in confusion and his mouth parted slightly in shock, he soon shook his head, a few stammers escaping him as he tried to figure out how to respond to this. Then he saw her call out to someone, and he turned to see who it was, but couldnât tell who she was talking to. What was going on? Clearing his throat, he stared down at her for a few moments, wondering what he should do. But then he decided, even if he didnât know whether it would be the best decision. But it was only fair. âIâm Rich Goldsworthy, I just came here from Bristol,â He replied blankly, as if this âfirstâ conversation were completely normal. âFigured Iâd meet a few new mates here or something...whatâs your name?â He knew he was being rather petty as some called it, but two could easily play at this game.

Winnie had used the summer to her advantageâ or, what she believed was her advantageâ to decompress completely. So Rich had gone back to Bristol, and hadnât even offered to bring her along. Any time she remembered this fact, and felt a little pot of anger begin to bubble up inside her, she would take a very deep breath and shift her focus to golden retrievers wearing party hats. It was her safety imageâ the one her therapist had given her.
She had started seeing a therapist.
That doesnât make me crazy, Winnie mentally practiced saying to people, in case it ever came out. She didnât plan for it to, but then, she didnât plan for a lot of the things that ended up happening in her life.
It wasnât really a therapist. It was more of an anger management professional.
Because the truth was, she had been angry when Rich left. Angrier than she had been in a long time. It was almost as though sheâd gone through the stages of griefâ beginning with denial that heâd even fled Hollywood Pointe, and eventually leading to anger. In July she had started seeing her therapist, and things got better. That was when she started to deliberately forget the events of the past school year, and the craziness of it allâ the first time she met Rich, to their fights, to that godawful accidental kiss at the danceâ she just let it all go. As though none of it ever happened.
Her plan was to go about the first day of her junior year as though theyâd never even met. But when she walked into the building and turned, the first thing she saw was Rich at his locker, and she instantly felt palpitations. Stop it, she silently reprimanded herself. Canât miss someone you never met.
So with an entirely false air of confidence she charged past his locker, her dark hair flowing in the breeze generated by the fans being pointed in her direction by two students at the bottom of the social totem pole. She kept her gaze forward, resisting the urge to turn around to see if he noticed her. Winnie stopped at her own locker, which had been freshly painted baby pink and decked out in glitter. And she stared at it, frozen.Â
What was she supposed to do now?
As he stared into his locker aimlessly, Rich felt a strange, unnatural breeze whoosh by him, and he only had to turn around halfway before he could sense who it was. She was still here - why wouldnât she be? Maybe a small part of him had worried that sheâd left and moved somewhere else or something over the time span of the summer. But no, she was here, only a few feet away from him for the first time in months. Slowly and cautiously, he turned around all the way, watching as she approached her own locker. It being obvious which one it was, and he was reminded of all of Winnieâs signature trademarks - something heâd never originally thought he might miss. His nerves already heightened just at the sight of her, and he couldnât help but wonder if sheâd already seen him. Would she have approached him if she had? He wasnât sure. But he took a deep breath, stuffing some books in his locker before he slammed it shut. Then he stepped towards her carefully, pausing only a bit away from her as he glanced at the ground, attempting to anticipate her possible reaction. She might grin in excitement and hug him, or she might just slap him across the face for even approaching her in the first place. It could go either way, and he tried to be prepared for either reaction. Finally he met her gaze, and he reached a hand behind his shoulder, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. â...Erm, hey.â

The few months back in Bristol had been much less exciting than Rich had originally anticipated them to be. Ever since arriving in Hollywood Pointe, heâd been aching to go back home, discontent with the idea of relocating in the first place. But as the days passed, heâd come to almost enjoy his new home, but more so the people heâd encountered here. While the two had bantered at first, Eli had become one of his closest friends in addition to being his cousin, and heâd met quite a few other friends here as well. But no one had impacted him the way that petite, somewhat loud yet beautiful brunette had. It didnât help that Rich had to leave just as he and Winnie were finally at a high in their relationship after months of back-and-forth, and perhaps they hadnât left on the best terms - Winnie hadnât been so fond of the idea of Rich leaving so eagerly. But that hadnât meant it wasnât hard for him, and now being back, he realized just how much he belonged here now. He had friends and family back in Bristol, sure, but those connections had dimmed compared to the ones heâd made here in Hollywood Pointe. So as he walked into the high school on the first day of his senior year, he both feared and looked forward to his inevitable run-in with the girl whoâd been on his mind for a majority of the summer. Rich made his way to his new locker, letting out an anxious sigh as he entered the combination. He would never admit to being glad to be back at school, but right now, it was where he wanted to be most.

âLanguage,â Winnie admonished, a little more gently than she ordinarily would have. âRichie, donât worry about any of that. I had my passport and my ID and all that good stuff. You just do the heavy lifting, and Iâll take care of everything else.â As he lifted her suitcase, she threw one arm around his waist, beaming. âBy the way, I packed three bottles of sunblock. I canât have you getting burnt to a crisp on this trip. Thatâll make so much more work for me,â she added quietly, but with a smile. She supervised his handling of her very fragile, very expensive luggage â it had to be handled with care, just like Winnie herself. âLooks like youâve got that under control! Thatâs the last bit of it.â Winnie climbed into the passengers seat of the car and immediately started playing around with the radio, landing on the Broadway musical channel. âRich, come quickly. Theyâre playing Castle On A Cloud. You know thatâs my favorite!â
Rich let out a defeated sigh, rolling his eyes. He knew how to use sunblock; in fact, it was almost always necessary back in Bristol. He rarely got burned, and when he did, heâd learned his lesson. âIâll be fine,â He mumbled, lifting the suitcases one by one and loading them into the trunk of the car. Heading back to the entry way of the house and doing one last glance-over to make sure he hadnât forgotten anything, Rich locked the front door and headed back towards the car, climbing into the driverâs seat and turning the key. Frowning at the sound of what sounded like a baby singing, he scoffed and shook his head. âNo way am I starting out this trip with a migraine. Find something else, wonât you? Otherwise Iâve got plenty of Slayer and Napalm Death on my phone that I can play.â He knew Winnie wouldnât be interested in listening to heavy metal, so he was willing to compromise a bit, but he couldnât stand musical theatre songs. Pulling out of the driveway, he started down the road, heading towards the highway.

âRichard, what are you waiting for? Letâs get a move on! We donât have all day!â Though she was yelling in her naturally-shrill yelling voice, Winnie was grinning. âThis is going to be the best vacation ever, isnât it?â
Rich was scanning the cabinets in the kitchen, looking for any last-minute snacks heâd be able to grab to bring along in the car. Hours of driving meant getting hungry pretty quickly, and he didnât want to have to stop all the time to buy food. âIâm getting some chips and shit, hang on,â He shouted into the other room, grabbing a handful of chip bags and stuffing them into a large beach bag. Dragging his luggage to the door, he let out a huff, his eyes settling on the shorter female. âYeah yeah, best ever. Did you pack your passport and your ID and all those essentials?â Rich reached for her suitcase and opened the front door, heading to the car to load everything into the trunk.
readysetgoldsworthy:
âFine, you make a strong case. Letâs get Chinese food, sans the pizza.â
âAlright, fair enough. Havenât had Chinese in a good while anyway.â
codyjfs:
âWe donât have to pay, you know. Iâve got a few tricks up my sleeve.â
âWhereâs this going, mate? You planning on stealing food or something?â
aaronhollings:
âPizza is pizza, dude. Pepperoni will do just fine.â
âGood, you arenât weird as fuck like Eli. Alright then, pepperoni it is. Youâre bringing the sodas and all, yeah?â
happiest memory you have?
I dunno, maybe seeing Napalm Death in concert for the first time. Pretty radical experience.

do you still want to go back to bristol or are you finally liking hollywood pointe?
Iâm surprisingly just fine where I am. Doesnât mean I wouldnât enjoy visiting Bristol again and maybe heading back there at some point.
âYouâre probably wondering how I ended up in this situation.â
.âMy guess is it was your own doing?â
