Before I started writing in earnest, I did not understand how much writing was going to eat into my fic reading time. We joke about having too many tabs open, but I have a different problem: the amount of tabs I have open on new fics is way smaller than it used to be. My ao3 wrapped would be a sad affair. Unless I’ve subscribed to an author or come across something on my dash, I basically don’t see it

Which has really driven home for me how much fandom cannot just be creators. You have to have people who want to read fic and meta discussions and joke posts. You have to have people who want to look at art and gifs. It has to be mutual.

Community thrives on flow. You have to have that movement of people sharing things with each other for a community to exist

One day, I gave in and read a fic everyone was talking about. And it did exactly what I expected. I never did finish that long fic. I still want to, but so much of the fandom landscape has changed since I started writing it. Idk about it anymore.

But I’ve noticed I can do one thing or the other. Either I can read it or I can write it. Something is going to suffer. So when people say they don’t write fic, I always ask if they read it. If no one is reading it, what am I even wasting my time on?

Steve’s identity revolves entirely around fighting. Fighting for the oppressed, fighting against oppressors, fighting just because. He actively wants to die fighting, that’s why he does what he does. He’s polite, sure, but never confuse that for being nice or civil. There’s a big difference. Steve was probably applying for the draft BEFORE Pearl Harbor, he’s very politically engaged, even before he became Captain America. He might wear old clothes, but rest assured he would be an actual punk if he was born today.

Let me help you out on how I think Bucky would easily get that book before it was available in the US. (I have done my homework here.)

His father was involved in the war prior to the US joining the war. That’s canon. It is also canon that Bucky had books that he seemed to value and that the Barnes family had plenty of money. The MCU quickly established that Bucky was a nerd. So I think when his father helped with the war, he was in the UK when that book came out and every child who could afford it was getting it for Christmas or whatever. It would not have bothered George Barnes that it cost the equivalent of about $50 in today’s $USD. He would have picked up the new, cool book for his kid.
