Puerto Ricans largely do not consider themselves to be American. We have our own consitition. Simply saying "Puerto Ricans are AMERICAN." makes it sound like it's a state like any other, when it's not. Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, a COLONY that was handed over after the Spanish-American war from one colonizer to another. The people of Puerto Rico gained US citizenship in 1917, but are not extended the same rights as people on the mainland.

At the end of the day, I feel like people focusing on whether Bad Bunny is American or not is absolutely moot point because the xenophobia being thrown at him has literally nothing to do with citizenship, and everything to do with our culture making white america angry and uncomfortable because it is different.

This whole thing just proves that it's not about legality or nationality, it is about hating what they don't understand and about hating that latinos are loud, powerful and numerous in the United States.

Bentio saying "We are Americans." at the Grammys was not specific to Puerto Ricans, it was too everyone being targeted by ICE.
