Memory can be a place of safety as well as yearning. We may have regrets and wish things were different. But whilst we might want the past to be changed, it can also be a source of comfort that things must remain as they are. We can enhance the past but it will always remain there for us. The virtue of memory is that it can be sealed up. In trauma or anxiety we can either dwell on the comforting or the regrettable. There are things we can cling on to that offer us security and then there are things that increase the load. This sense of dwelling as a comfort suggests the notion of protected intimacy. This is the ordinary experience of housing as a place of sharing, caring and mutual security; it is the recognition that we do not experience our housing in the form of coherent arguments, rebuttals and discourse, but through association and the linkage of personal actions to specific places at particular times: we are located through the specificity of enclosed space and the immediacy of personal relations
