Ahmad immediately embraces him and wants to keep him there forever: in their home, in his arms, away from any harm. They both cry into each other arms because it’s been such a hard and long time. Ahmad keeps apologising, he should’ve been there, it’s his fucking job to keep the Pitt as a safe space and in his wedding vows he swore to protect Jesse. Jesse puts their forehead against each others, assuring him that he could’ve done nothing more and him fighting tooth and nail (and giving the Pitt’s lawyer who was on the case headaches) was more than enough.

When they both calm down, probably after eating dinner, they retreat to the intimacy of their room, cuddling and Ahmad inspects every inch of Jesse, cursing every time he sees the faintest sign of a bruise and kisses it, Jesse lets him, he knows it’s his husband way of making sure he’s fine.

They’re both getting sleepy so they get ready to sleep, still pressed to each other. It’s the first time in months that Ahmad falls asleep so quickly, the presence next to him soothing. Jesse on the other hand can’t sleep even if he finally has his husband back. Memories are haunting him and the thought of going back to work soon too.

Ahmad asks him what’s wrong, what’s on his mind that’s bothering him so much that he can’t sleep, and Jesse just breaks down in sobs, really letting go for the first time since the 4th of July. "I just…I’m scared… and I don’t know if I want to go back to do what I love because of it. Our country is so fucked and I don’t know if I’m ready to step back in the Hospital. And I don’t know if i’m ready to sue either, if I’m ready to face them, I’m just so exhausted from fighting."

Jesse ends some shifts on the roof. Unlike Jack or Robby he's up there cause he’s happy to be alive. Years in the ER watching life come and go on the twist of fate has made him feel lucky for each day. He likes to take time to enjoy the little things. Watching the sunset, always on the right side of the railings. Enjoying the breeze on his skin, feeling the warmth of day slip into night. Small precious things. On the odd occasion he’s bumped into Robby up there that’s the stuff he talks about.

He lingers long enough to see the stars and think about the patients he’s lost and never forgotten. He always tries to head up there for a full moon and thinks about how small we all are and short life is in the grand scheme of the universe. It helps him let things go. He promises the night sky that he’ll try make life good for as many people he can for as long as he can. He knows the skyline well enough he can pick out sights and spots where he’s made memories. Some make him smile, some make him cry. Then he walks home listening to his favourite songs, feeling grateful.
