""""the joestar curse""""
doubling down on this because the best comparison point for jolyne is in fact trish: a girl whos father through his absence has 'protected' her from the reality that she is and always would be a stand user, and act of denial of her history (implicitly medical history, stands are a virus) that nearly gets both of them killed, and only through being empowered to know this about themselves are they finally able to act. neither of those fathers want either of their daughters to be autonomous actors, and their insistence on forcing their children to be so through denial of self-knowledge is an act of tremendous (misogynistic) violence.
stone ocean is a tragedy about what the outcome will inevitably be if you carry out that violence, full stop. it is about the consequences of jotaro being a benevolent misogynist and a deadbeat, the way he dooms his child. theyre swallows who do it to themselves and each other by refusing the break the cycle. theres no such thing as the joestar curse.
over and over again, the desire to "protect" the joestar children from their legacy, their parents refusing to train them to fight, to protect themselves, gets them killed. it killed george, it nearly killed holly, and it killed jolyne!
if joseph wasn't such a prodigy, erina banned him from hamon training would have killed him as well!! erina, joseph, jotaro, over and over again tried to "protect" their children only to lead them to their deaths!
my goal is to lay out my jojo analysis in such a way that is coherent enough i can have conversations with other people about it

the tragedy of jonathan is that he didnt get to live long enough to be a complicated person. "he would be disappointed in his descendants" always confuses me as a sentiment bc his descendants got to live far longer and fuller lives then he did
so so so important that okuyasu chooses to live for himself, for his town for his community, and not for josuke. while i think the scene itself more overtly subverts caesar's death, i think the character okuyasu more closely parallels is speedwagon! speedwagon who dedicated his life to jonathan and jonathan's memory who never confessed his love to jonathan and never found new love, dying closeted. okuyasu doesn't do that he lives for himself. ive sometimes seen ppl re-framing this as okuyasu living for josuke but i disagree with that in fact okuyasu living for himself is part of why i like the idea of joseyasu being potentially endgame. they can love each other as equals
it is just so bleak and tragic, how caesar's last act, what it means to be a zeppeli, is for history to repeat itself, for zeppelis to die for joestars. his life was always of lower value, his purpose to be symbolically if not literally crucified so joseph can grow into a man. so he live, so he can get married, so he can continue his far more important bloodline.
it sucks! (positive) (heart wrenching) (later paralleled and subverted beautifully with okuyasu refusing to die for josuke and instead choosing to live for himself)
this happened with jotaro and jolyne

can someone bite the bullet for me and find out whatever araki's opinions on abortion is (dont actually i dont want to know)
there is 7 years of time after dio kills danny and shames erina out of jonathan's life, 7 years jonathan spends in "solitude" ... with dio.
theres a bit of a bait and switch at the beginning of the next chapter, showing jonathan and dio getting along, the possibility they may have become friends, only for jonathan to silent lament how miserable he is "unable to feel friendship towards dio"
but they still act outwardly friendly towards each other, it does seem as though dio got genuinely "nicer" after isolating jonathan, making himself the closest thing jonathan has to a friend, likely continuing to isolate him from any other possible friendships like their rugby teammates.
jonathan even questions the validity of the incidents with danny and erina, surely he is the one unfairly holding a grudge against dio, who has been nothing but nice to him, the boy who's been by his side all these years, surely there is something wrong with him that he is unable to return the brotherly love dio shows him.
its an interesting depiction of sibling abuse

increasingly i think there is something with dio and jonathan paralleling jousuke and joshu in part 8. dio and jousuke as the "invaders" into an established wealthy family, with joshu acting as the jonathan with the strongest distrust of jousuke and forming their rivalry.
