abandonware should be public domain. force companies to actively support and provide products if they don't wanna lose the rights to them
Game companies hate emulation, but none of them seem to understand that a lot of us would just buy ROMs from them directly if we could. I don't want a fifth remake of Final Fantasy IV, I want to pay five bucks for the 3MB file you already made bank with thirty years ago. Nobody who wants to play something for the purpose of retro gaming is going to consider a $40 remake as the alternative option, and we're certainly not going to let the original dissappear. They're crying about opportunity cost for a product they're not even selling.
op i know you're probably talking about like, video games, etc, but this is also critical for research science - my lab has so much abandonware, either because the company's out of business, or the company decided to not maintain it, and it's a fucking nightmare. we have two windows 95 computers that are CRITICAL for performing experiments/data analysis because the software needed is abandonware. one of the main roles for a guy in my lab is to maintain these little dinosaurs because if they go out, we lose access to ~20 years of raw data for research. part of why is that these companies also make their own file types, and make it difficult-to-impossible to convert those file types without their specific software. by habit, i convert all research files to more generic versions (txt, pdf, tif, etc) so that i minimize risk of losing my shit, but some stuff can't be converted.
for example, we have a microscope that is perfectly functional, good microscope, but its software is abandonware because the company refused to maintain it. the company is still in business, still makes essentially the exact same software, but they made all of the old tech incompatible with new software to force people to buy the new microscope tech. it would cost a quarter million dollars to replace this microscope. this perfectly good microscope.
so like, i know a lot of people look at the original post here and go "well op just wants old video games to play" (which is valid! games companies should not be able to push shit to abandonware and then close it off) but also this is critical for like. biomedical research. if y'all had any idea how much basic infrastructure built on science relies on shit that is technically abandonware, you would probably be horrified.
#there is so much abandonware just...out there being used and carefully maintained#because nothing quite replicates the functionality
I know people who have windows 95 computers they lovingly maintain and care for because those computers are the newest things compatible with some of the best scanners to ever be made, and using a modern flatbed leaves substantial amounts of resolution on the table for digitizing sheet film.

“I am Rose Belmont! And I will hunt the night!"
The Fallen is the first boss in the new game Belmont's Curse. I'd like to pay close attention to the fact that "monster" is in quotes. But now let's look at the various details of his costume and his tarot card (shown in the second picture). On the top left of the image, there is a human silhouette weilding a sword and has an apparent shoulder pad.
Moving to the third picture, there's three key details to this costume. The left arms has a yellow thorned vine coiling around it. The right hand not only has a metal gauntlet that's layered on the back of the hand, but is perpetually bloodied. And on the backside seems to be remnants of a white tailcoat with a red trim along the bottom.
Both coincide with the previous designs of Leon Belmont. Though, with some caveats. Leon's big metal gauntlet is usually on his left hand, and he uses the whip with his right. The Fallen reverses the use of both hands. But both swing with a whip, The Fallen uses a cross in the first trailer, and the perpetual bloodied right hand could be inspired by the blood pact with Sara for the creation of the Vampire Killer.
There's also one more small detail that seems to serve more as a nod to Lament of Innocence. The fifth picture at the top shows The Fallen next to a large door with 3 segments. Each segment depicts a boss, more easily visible in the sixth picture. Joan of Arc on top, Medusa on the bottom-right, and a clawed out and defaced segment on the bottom-left. These segments have a jewel(?) slot in each that are yellow, green, and purple respectively. This serves as a nod to the first portion of Lament of Innocence killing 5 bosses and collecting their orbs to unseal the door leading to the big, bad vampire. Yellow, Green, Purple, Red, and Blue are the boss orbs with Black and White being optional hidden orbs. Three of those colors line up with the door in the fifth picture.
All's to say there is essentially a 100% chance that Leon Belmont is in the newest game as a fucked up lycanthrope, cursed boss, and possibly supporting character through the game. The only things we don't know is how he got like this, and what role he'll serve and what kind of subplot he might have. My scrunglo is fucking back.
