NewtxY/n
————————————————————— I watched my surroundings closely as we walked from my hut toward the cafeteria, blinking rather rapidly, trying to break away from this dreamlike state that caused the world around me to feel fake. I was still in another world, not fully here with Newt. I hadn’t been paying attention to my steps nor my pace and felt a cold hand interlock with mine.
Newt: “Love, you’re moving awfully slow.”
Y/n: “Am I”
It wasn’t a question; my tone was tired and stoic. I had no energy to ask a question.
Newt: “Come on.”
Newt carried my hand in his, and soon enough we showed up at the open cafeteria. He led me to the closest table and let me sit down before walking off toward the kitchen, but not without resting a hand on my head and letting it fall smoothly as he walked off, almost as if he was trying to physically ground me back into this reality. Not a moment later, he came back with a hot bowl of soup and some bread.
Newt: “I’ll grab you some water.”
I didn’t fight the fact that I was hungry, grabbing the bread and dipping it into the steamy soup. I told myself this would fix the feeling that had taken me over, placing a false hope in my heart that I was just hungry, that my sugar was low and the food would fix everything, although anyone with a lick of sense would know it was false.
Newt: “It’s good to see you eat. I think I can already see some color coming back into your face.”
Newt’s tone held only a small hint of teasing as he sat across from me, placing the cup of water in front of me. Something tugged softly at the corners of my lips, something I hadn’t felt in a long time.
Newt: “That smile… the one you used to wear so freely. I miss it, Y/n. Everyone does.”
I continued eating, but my head moved very softly in a half nod. I acknowledged his words, and I knew they were true. We sat in silence until I finished all of the food in front of me.
Newt: “You want more?”
Y/n: “I’m full.”
He picked up the bowl and cup, taking them back into the kitchen, but not before giving me small praise.
Newt: “Good job, sweetheart.”
I did feel better now that I was fueled by some food. It was easier to lift my head and move my limbs. My stomach was full, which healed a bit of the hollowness within me, although I knew deep down all of it would never be completely gone. It would always linger, because that’s what grief did. It stuck around no matter how many times you dared to confront it. It never cared about convenience or comfort; it was raw and ruthless. I felt a hand on my shoulder and jumped softly.
Newt: “Easy, love. It’s just me—although it’s nice to see some life back in you.”
I wasn’t sure what to say. It felt like it’d been forever since I had carried on a conversation with someone.
Newt: “You don’t have to say anything. Wanna go down to the sea? I haven’t seen you down there yet. It’s beautiful. You’ll love it.”
I nodded, standing up from my seat and following him. This time I felt more alive. I walked less like a zombie and more like a human, but Newt still held my hand with a firm grip. I could hear the sea before I saw it, the smell giving me a new wave of strength and a new feeling of freedom.
It wasn’t long until I felt my bare feet sink into the soft sand. I hadn’t even realized I’d been walking barefoot, but I didn’t mind. If anything, it made the moment all the more freeing. Newt walked us over to the shore and stepped forward, letting the water run over his feet before watching it recede back into the sea.
Newt: “C’mon, it’s warm.”
He nodded his head for me to come stand beside him, and I did, watching the next wave come up and run over both our feet before once again receding back into the sea, just like the last. I couldn’t help but take a deep breath and close my eyes for only a moment.
Newt: “It’s nice, yeah?”
I nodded, opening my eyes and looking out at the sea, lifting my head to the sky, admiring the stars and the crescent moon. Newt offered a hand to me with a soft, reassuring look, and I took it gently, letting him wade the both of us deeper into the water. He stopped when we were about waist deep.
The water washed away everything I had carried for so long, and I felt weightless. The water around me served as a gentle hug, and I couldn’t help but wrap my arms around Newt’s neck. He wasted no time wrapping his around me, holding me with a reassuring pressure, but not an overwhelming one.
Newt: “Just let it go, love.”
His deep, soft voice echoed in my ears as the weight of his chin rested on my head. I relaxed against him, finally feeling completely at peace in my body and my mind. We stayed like that a long while, letting the silence between us speak volumes.
Newt:“You know you’re even more beautiful when you don’t look half dead?”
He teased softly, leaning back to look down at me with a small smile. A smile tugged at my own lips as I made eye contact with him, and I hit his chest lightly.
Y/n: “Shut up.”
I pushed back slightly to put some distance between us, but he pulled me back against him, one hand on my waist while he intertwined his other with my own.
Newt: “Make me, sweetheart.”
Y/n: “Oh?”
Newt: “Yeah.”
He let go of my waist to splash me with water, and I scoffed a laugh, droplets of water running down my face.
Y/n: “You did not.”
Newt: “I’m afraid I did.”
I held back a smile, contemplating what I should do before finally pushing his chest with both my hands, sending him falling back into the water as he tried to catch himself. He came back up with a gasp, running a hand over his face before locking eyes with me. I knew that smile, and it meant I was next. I laughed and turned, trying to get away quickly, but was stopped by a firm grasp on my wrist pulling me back toward him.
Y/n: “NO!” I laughed uncontrollably. “Newt, no!”
I felt both his arms around me before he lifted me into the air, preparing to throw me, and before I could protest I was airborne, landing in the water. I came back up laughing and rubbing my eyes, hearing his chuckles and feeling his arms wrap back around me before I could even open my eyes. But when I did, there he was, with that grin he always seemed to carry. I gripped his upper arms firmly.
Newt: “You know I missed you.”
He rested his forehead against mine, both of us having a sparkle in our eyes that wasn’t there before.
Y/n: “You wanna kiss me already?”
He laughed deeply but didn’t hesitate, gently bringing one hand from my waist to my cheek, caressing it softly with his thumb, admiring me with that look he always had, the one that always shows up when we have moments like this. Then, slowly and softly, his lips landed on my own.
Maybe I was lost, and a part of me would always be hollow, but Newt filled a lot of that empty space with something special. Something no one else could ever give me. Something we couldn’t put into words, so instead we put it into moments like this. Even when I couldn’t find myself, I knew who always could.
Newt.
