He was silent as he drove you to the hotel. You asked him timidly if he would go in with you. He sighed. He had seen things like this before. Heartbreak and grief as people get left at the altar. But this was different. And you were so frightened. So he did the one thing he never had done before.

He parked. He opened the back door. And he slid in beside you.

You immediately wrapped your arms around him, sobbing. His strong fingers grasped around you a little more tightly than he should have.

You told him about all the non refundable deposits. Asked if he would go with you.

Don’t you have friends or family? He had asked.

You said you didn’t feel safe anymore. He was the only person that seemed normal. Seemed okay. Seemed capable of helping you forget how what was supposed to be the happiest day of your life turned into the most horrifying one.

He shouldn’t have said yes. He shouldn’t have joined you in your hotel room. But you told him you were frightened you would get drunk and do something stupid. He couldn’t have that.

He didn’t understand why he let you fall asleep in his arms. He kicked himself for imagining that things were different. That his suit was a tux and that the white dress you were barely able to wriggle out of was for him. He was a madman. He shouldn’t be anywhere near you.

But, as you had admitted, it’s not like you were that good a judge of character to begin with. You would need someone to protect you from making the same mistake twice.
