And I had always, always assumed without question that Scully’s cross necklace is left behind in the trunk of the car she’s abducted in because it gets snagged and yanked off of her inadvertently in a struggle with Duane as he pulls her out of the trunk.

It was yesterday when a Twitter mutual in the midst of a rewatch says, just without a shadow of a doubt, “She left her necklace to tell him she’d come back.”

And I don’t think it’s quite that. Because she didn’t and couldn’t have known what was actually about to happen. Whatever she thought or feared was going to happen to her, I don’t think it was that she was really about to be taken by shadowy forces within the US government working in league with alien colonizers and that she’d be missing for three months without explanation.

But I had never, ever considered that she did it on purpose.

And I do think she did it on purpose. Not so much to tell him she’d come back–again, she doesn’t know–but purely as a matter of making sure that if he found the car, he would know that she’d been there and that he was on the right track. Either to finding her alive, or at least to knowing what had happened to her.

And I think she thought of it because he’s saved her because he found her necklace once before.
