This clickbait is literally SO funny because while I get they wanted it to look intimidating, that's a fucking ringneck snake.

I guess it looks kind of scary if you dont know what it is. But the ringneck snake (called "southern ringneck" in Florida, where I live) is probably one of the most non-lethal and completely harmless snakes ever. They're not venomous, are nocturnal, and also....

Moomin first appeared in Tove Jansson’s art in the 1930s. But these first characters were very different from the famous round and friendly creatures. First Moomintrolls were dark, slender and mean creatures that lived in the pantry in Stockholm, in Norr Mälärstrand 26. This is where Tove’s rather wealthy unlce, a doctor, lived. Tove arrived to visit her wealthy Swedish uncle in autumn 1930 from rather poor and suffering Finland, so his stacked pantry naturally enchanted the 16-year-old girl. Uncle Einar warned the girl that moomintrolls would rub their cold noses against anyone who tried to steal food from the pantry at night. This became a loving joke between the uncle and niece.

It is not clear if northern spirits actually blow cold onto their victims, but Tove’s uncle and his friend from Helsinki told stories like this. As an 18-year-old, Tove wrote into her diary how this friend’s ghost stories had scared her so badly that she had to run home and hide under the covers. There she imagined that moomintrolls were moving her slippers around under her bed. 

Tove’s brother Per Olov has said that the first Moomintroll was drawn to the wall of an outhouse in Pellinki archipelago, in around 1935 when Tove was about twenty. The siblings had being fighting over philosophers and Per Olov wrote something smart on the wall. Tove got back by drawing an angry character next to it, which she named “snork”. This was supposedly a caricature of Kant, who Tove could not stand. 

Moomintroll became Tove’s mascot and her tormentor. They would appear in her art here and there, mostly as small figures in the background. These moomintrolls were dark and unfriendly. Tove had always loved unknown and scary things, so this character being so foreboding and eerie was actually a positive feature for her. Moomintrolls represented escapism and fantasy for her from the very start. 

At first, the kept using the name she had given to her caricature, “snork”, which only later changed into moomin, the name her uncle had used. The origins of the name can change. Either if came from the “muhmuh” noise that moomintrolls supposedly made. Or perhaps from Egyptian mummies, common figures in scary stories. Tove never gave a clear answer and it is likely that would have been impossible, since creative process is affected by many things.
