We Belong Together: The Ending of Orange is the New Black Explained

In the final moments of the smash hit “Orange is the New Black,” we see the love her or hate her character, Piper Chapman driving down the freeway with a self-assurance and calm rarely seen from her throughout the series. It is unclear where she is driving to, Zelda in Massachusetts or Alex in Ohio, but in the final moment before the screen fades, we see her holding hands and laughing with the partner on the seven-season roller coaster ride, Alex Vause. It is, at least in their minds, happily ever after. But are they, in fact, together as they were? Should we as viewers see this as a happy ending, given what we know about how toxic this backstabbing duo can be both individually and as a couple? The short answer is, yes. The biggest clue we are given as to the status of their relationship is the split second where Piper is driving with her ring on her finger and the moment Alex reaches her hand across the small barrier keeping them apart and we see hers as well in a blink and you’ll miss it moment. If these two don’t consider themselves married still, and I’m not sure they do, then they at least view themselves as not just a couple but an engaged pair who are working on their relationship. The question of whether we should be happy for them is tougher to answer and gets into sticky debates about relationships. This is television but everyone has known a couple you can’t help but root for and Vauseman are one of them for many viewers. In that final moment they look happier, healthier and better for each other than ever, both individually and as a couple. Love is rare, they are happy and soulmates so yes, we should be happy for them as they go into an uncertain future.

Alex never having to come out. Diane just always knowing and that was that. That’s who Alex was and how their life was.
