’…Seven, eight, nine, ten’ Emma counted of silently in her head as she listened to Regina bad mouth her parents. Yes, she was still trying to wrap he head around that fact and how she felt about finally meeting the family she’d all but written off ever finding and yes, there were several conversations she’d had with Mary Margaret that she would never have had had she known her roommate was also her mom – and was hoping had been conveniently lost when the curse restored Snow and David’s memories – but they were still her parents and before that, they were her friends.

“What? Why hair? I get the eyes and the tongue – gross as those are – but why the hair. Why not the heart or liver or some other organ?” She paused. “And why magic. In fact, how can they see magic unless you’re-” She gave another wave of her hand to mimic casting a spell only to quickly stop herself before she got too far into the gesture. “-using it.”
Regina’s tone is thoughtless--casual as she explains, eyes focused ahead (cautious and aware, if bored) as they push through the bush. “Some trolls deal in jewelry, they hoard trinkets and trade gold for them. But most trolls hoard jewelry for the sole reason that they like things with human attachment. The most dangerous trolls like to devour magic because they’re as mortal as the rest of us. Magic is the only thing that can postpone their little miserable existences from turning to stone.” Another branch snaps underneath her palm and she plays with the idea, for a moment, of letting the next smack the Savior in the face.
She barely resists the urge. “As...quaint as it is, you’re the product of true love and love is the...strongest,” Her distaste for it smears her tongue, “Magic. Two twined hairs could--” She pauses, not sure why she’s explaining all of this to Emma in the first place. Not when any lessons about magic could be used to hold her. Detain her. Keep her from her son, since magic is in Storybrooke and Regina’s wasn’t. “They have a thing for gold.” She says, instead. Maybe she’ll pluck one of Emma’s hairs for safe measure. “Trolls are too pitiful to take a heart. There have only been three people known powerful enough to take them.” Face turning down for only a moment. A mere breath before it becomes even. Because she can’t afford a thought to her mother. “And one of them is an imp with a cane who likes to play with wraiths.”
Emma couldn’t help but smirk when Regina got her jeans and panties off. That she really was a fairytale princess from a magic kingdom like so many of her fellow foster-care sisters would daydream about being before they were either ground down by the system, or lucky enough to escape to a half way decent family.
It meant her whole life was a lie. It meant she didn’t know who she was anymore and right now Emma needed to know. She needed one rock she could hold onto, one absolute that would keep her going. Keep her sane.
“No.” Emma’s voice was free of the the sarcasm that had tinged it a moment earlier, free of the anger that she’d forced herself to contain. “But if we’re going to do this, we do it smart. We don’t get more than arms length apart until we’ve dealt with the Wraith just in case you have to work your mojo.”
