That was a fate that, well... Nanaki would most likely experience, several times. It was enough to lose friends in one lifetime, but in ten or a hundred lifetimes... He frowned.
“That-” Cloud flushed. Did Nanaki really think so highly of him? “Uh. Thanks. Barrett and Aerith would be better suited, I... I want to save the planet- but not like they do. I mean, maybe it’s selfish... but, it’s hard. It’s hard to want to fight for someone you don’t know. Guess that just means I gotta make new friends, huh?”
“I grew up right next to a mako reactor. So this... natural beauty stuff people talk about. I haven’t seen a lot of it. It surprised me when I saw Aerith sell flowers. I hadn’t seen a real one in a long, long time...”
❝ no you are perfectly suited - more than you realize. ❞ Nanaki says as he gazed up at Cloud. ❝ no one cares about this planet more than you. you may not show it , but you care. ❞
humans often said that there was nothing beyond Midgar. having seen this planet , he knows it to be true. there is nothing out there. most of the life is gone. the mako reactors are taking from the planet's life and it is dying. nature is dwindling little by little. even Nanaki's people were dying.
❝ that's why we need to save the planet. it's not just the people you are fighting for. it's friends , family , and nature. all of it. the people you don't know are just a bonus of sorts. but you're trying and that's what matters. ❞
"I said I'd live out both our lives. Easy to make that promise."
❝ you made that promise to a friend , yes ? ❞ he responded , head lowered slightly as he sits and gazes upon Cloud with one amber eye. ❝ you are still living. I would say it is a promise well kept. unless , there is more to it than that. if so , then I may not be the best to make such a claim , but , there is still more ahead of you. if you truly desire to fulfill this promise then perhaps we can all help. ❞

"Huh?"
That definitely wasn't anywhere near what he expected to hear, standing with his sword poised ready to defend [and offend if necessary]. Actually he didn't really expect to hear anything but primal growls coming from the creature before him, unlike anything he'd ever seen before.
What else could he expect from Shinra? They were the best for a reason, learning how to breach barriers that no one else had ever before. As a result, they produced some pretty.... sickening things.
He had a pretty one track mind, already settled on battling the creature --- unable to process quick enough to determine some things had changed.
❝ go hide - quickly before you and me. ❞ he reiterates and then he runs up towards the other to try and use his snout and body to physically push against the other's legs. it was a gamble considering he had a pretty large weapon and if he swung it he'd not get out unscathed. however , his hearing was picking up footsteps and Nanaki didn't want to be caught again. he'd just gotten out of a laboratory. he didn't want to be sent back.
❝ I am not your enemy. trust me. ❞ he pushes again against the other's leg trying to see if he would listen to reason and move. maybe he should run past him and leave him to fight those guards on his own , but Nanaki's one fault was that he was too nice and he didn't want the other to get caught up in his battle.
❝ we need to take cover now ! ❞

there was some wisdom to what Cloud had said things had to work out because they put the work in. maybe Nanaki really was just projecting what he wanted onto Cloud. he saw Cloud as confident and pretty bad ass. the way he fought was extraordinary for a two - legged. Nanaki had come to not only respect Cloud , but to see him as a brother even if they were very different. he was proud to call Cloud both brother and warrior even if only to himself. but maybe Cloud was just as scared as he was.
❝ aren’t you afraid of dying ? ❞ even though his people were warrior , Nanaki still feared dying. the thought of his own life ending terrified him. what then ? he would be the life stream but what came after ? what if it was all just nothingness ?
thinking about it didn’t make him feel better.
“What I’m afraid of is losing people while I’m still here, and not doing anything about it,” Cloud explained. “Maybe I’ll get to see the people I’ve lost in the lifestream... but, people with regrets just wander the planet aimlessly, yeah? Even if the lifestream is a beautiful place...” Well, he hadn’t thought much about it. Maybe he’d have to ask Aerith. She might know. “It’s part of the planet, too. I don’t know, I never thought much about it.” He shook his head. “But losing you guys... that’s scarier to me than death.”

❝ hmmm … ❞ Nanaki prided himself on being a proud warrior. and it’s true that he was skilled. even when he was terrified he was absolutely skilled. but in the end , he was still very young in years. hence why he was around the same age as Cloud. what he didn’t understand was how Cloud , Tifa , and the others were always so sure of themselves and their decisions. Nanaki had been sure of himself when he didn’t want to be around them , stating that he only wanted to go as far as Cosmo Canyon. it had been his grandfather who urged him to go travel and see the world and he did so in order to learn and broaden his horizons.
but he was still uncertain and young in years. he was still a young adult. even if he’d lived more sunsets than the others , he was still around their age. though he often spoke in a very wise manner , he was showing a much softer side to Cloud as he hung his head slightly lower , muzzle pointed more towards the ground.
❝ there is no doubt that my skills as a warrior are very prized. but , there is no making up for the fact that I am still very much unsure of myself. it’s still terrifying , knowing that life is so uncertain. how are you often so confident , Cloud ? ❞
“Confi...” No one had ever described him that way before. Was he confident? As a kid, he could be aggressive, but insecure. As a teenager, he was eager, but very shy. Now... “Why do you think I’m confident? I just- I believe in you. I believe in Tifa. I believe that...” He hummed, trying to think. “It’s not that I think things will work out... It’s that they have to. If we put all this effort in, and we fail- then we’ll just be dead. Not sure how the lifestream works, but... I don’t think I’ll regret that. If my best isn’t good enough, then... what should I do? Just wait around and die? That’s not fair. That’s not fair to my friends, let alone myself...” He didn’t like to admit it, but he cared. He cared a lot. It was almost a good thing that they were always in danger, because he could jump to the rescue. He was always reminded of what was at stake, and what was important to him.

Nanaki is happy as is with his friends. it had taken quite a while to open up to them , but they were not bad two-legged humans. as with all things , there were good and bad and he’d met bad ones , but Cloud was a good one.
❝ I do not wish to be a burden. ❞

"Yes, somewhere warm, but not Costa Del Sol. That would be really Lovely, do you think you could get word out to Vincent, yuffi and Sid?" She asked.
She could see it now, the group of them running over the sand having a good time. Cocktails and a villa with a pool. They could all catch up, celebrate Vincent.
Together again as a group.
❝ I don't see why not. Cid and Yuffie should be easy to get in contact with. Vincent not so much it seems. but word will reach him. maybe I can track him down and tell him about the idea. ❞ having everyone there as a group makes things fun. even he seemed to have brighter spirits when around everyone. the vacation would do them all some good. they needed time to relax and de-stress. they needed time to unwind. ❝ if not Costa Del Sol then where ? ❞ the Gold Saucer was out. Junon was pretty dreary ... he couldn't really think of anywhere else suitable.
Her tail sweeps across the floor, feeling rather pleased with this bed she had claimed for herself. Adalinda has always been a very rowdy and free-spirited individual, though it often seems withdrawn in the eyes of strangers. But, in the presence of her own kin, for lack of better words, she felt more . . . Like herself. A massive paw lifts, playfully pushing at his head before she lets him up, only enough to make curling against him much easier. It's nap time.
his own fiery tail sweeps in a wide relaxing motion. Nanaki feels her paw against him and lifts his head. he readjusts himself as much as possible before finding himself curled against and he in turn curls against her. there is a certain kinship there. he feels it and he once more allows a deep rumble of a purr to reverberate from his chest. and he closes amber eyes in contentment.

there was a deep sadness coming from Cloud that Nanaki understood. that emptiness and longing. when he lost his parents he felt an emptiness. except , he barely had memories of his father and only a few memories of his mother. he was mostly raised by his grandfather and he was not the same species. not only that , but he was elderly and though Nanaki didn’t want to admit it - he knew Bugenhagen was elderly and not going to live much longer. he offers another quiet rumble of a purr as Cloud pets his head. ordinarily , he’d grumble a bit , but Cloud was the only one around his age and well , sometimes he needed a good helping hand.
Nanaki feels like there was a moment of understanding between them. ❝ not just Tifa … everyone here is for you Cloud. ❞

She sighed and smiled up at the sky. Warm sun light touched her skin.
"I have no idea what Vincent would like. A new cloak maybe?" She blinked a few times and rubbed her chin.
"Could make him a scarf?"
❝ I want to get you something. it would be rude not to. ❞ at least , Nanaki assumed as much. he was not as familiar with the day , but not reciprocating her act of niceness simply did not sit well with him. so he resolves to figure out a way to repay her kindness to him.
as for the matter of Vincent ... ❝ perhaps he will enjoy a new cloak or scarf. even more so if you made it yourself. ❞
he paused for a moment. ❝ there is also the simple gift of your time and presence which means a great deal to all of us. ❞
