You won’t hold me, you won’t understand
Hard is a part of me I can’t stand
And as you stay there, I cry
Everything and nothing are my thoughts
But you are lost

Protest songs in different languages
~ English ~
Green day: I am a big Green Day fan so they’re the first band I thought of when I started making this post - American Idiot - Holiday: probably their most powerful (and political) song. It’s an anti-war song which criticizes the Bush administration and the war in Iraq, it urges the people not to just sit back and watch things happen like they’re taking a holiday, but to stand up and do something about it. - Revolution radio (about modern politics in the USA) - Bang Bang (about mass shootings in America)
I give you power - Arcade fire
A hard rain’s a-gonna fall - Bob Dylan
People live here - Rise against
If you tolerate this your children will be next - Manic Street Preachers
Rock the casbah - The Clash
Sunday bloody sunday - U2
The revolution will not be televised - Gill Scott-Heron
Drive - R.E.M.
Another brick in the wall - Pink Floyd
King park - La Dispute
~ French ~
Renaud: I was raised listening to his songs because he’s my Dad favorite artist. Renaud is known for his polemic songs criticizing the French society. What I love about him is that he attacks every one and every thing about France and French society, but you can see that whatever what he says, he still loves France - Hexagone - Société tu m’auras pas - Morts les enfants
Saez: basically all of his songs are protest songs so here are some of his most known ones: - Jeune et con - J’accuse - Jeunesse lève-toi - Fils de france
Kery James: he made a lot of polemic songs, some love him and others hate him but whatever you think about his songs, you can’t ignore how powerful they are. I recommend Lettre à la république, a song about racism and the consequences of the colonization.
Medine: he made a whole series of songs called “Enfant du destin” (Child of the destiny) where in each song he tells the story of a different child who suffers because of conflicts, poverty etc. The series of songs include: - Nour (a girl from Myanmar) - David (a boy from Israel) - But my favorite one is Kounta Kinte, which was inspired by the excellent book “Roots” by Alex Haley
Le déserteur - Boris Vian. I had to include this song: it’s an old one but in my opinion it’s one of the most beautiful French songs
Suicide social - Orelsan (definitely not politically correct, but a very good song anyway), you can also check out Basique
~ Spanish ~
Canción Con Todos - Mercedes Sosa
Hasta siempre comandante - Carlos Puebla
Calle 13 - Latinoamérica (I LOVE this song, it’s a beautiful description of latin america)
Marcha la bronca - Pedro y Pablo
~ Portuguese ~
O Tempo Não Pára - Cazuca
Que pais é esse? - Legião Urbana
Tô Feliz - Gabriel o Pensador
Ainda ha tempo - Criolo Doido
Tell me what you think about these songs are which ones are your favorites! I think music is a very powerful tool to protest and make things change so I really wanted to make this post :) Feel free to reblog with more songs and languages!
