Concerts this year so far have been legendary. Have had the privilege to meet Tommy Stinson, hang out with Greg Norton, get a setlist from Camera Obscura, and dance onstage with my friend and Belle & Sebastian.
There is an aspect of music being that kind of catharsis. The whole point of writing the songs is to get this shit out of your system. So in that sense I think it's therapy for us. It's actually a good thing for us to do. ⓒ Curt, Classic Pop Magazine, Issue 90 (11-12.2024)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CURT SMITH (24.06.1961)
Mutuals I want you to know that if you are feeling down I am handing you little heart stickers through the computer
“They had the most unique, hypnotic sound. It’s trashy Americana, John Waters, Divine, the Shangri-La’s, high camp and bubblegum punk. The beat is everything. Fred (Schneider) always reminded me of Dr Zachary Smith from Lost in Space. I never thought about whether the B-52’s had a gay angle. They were just against rules in general – taking classic American kitsch and giving it a punk, space-age irreverence, like a beautiful car crash with pop surrealism. They were very camp but very funky: always on it, melodic but effortlessly free. It’s the sort of pop music that I want to hear.”
/ Boy George reflecting on the B-52’s in The Guardian in January 2023 /
Born on this day: the wondrous Cindy Wilson (née Cynthia Leigh Wilson, 28 February 1957), one of the founding members of essential post-punk party band the B-52’s (and one of Athens, Georgia’s finest exports)! For me, Wilson’s dissonant science fiction anti-harmonies with co-vocalist Kate Pierson are one of the defining sounds of 1980s American New Wave music. I also cherish her emotion-wracked lead vocals on tracks like “Hero Worship”, “Give Me Back My Man” “Loveland” and “Girl from Ipanema Goes to Greenland.” She also, of course, has exemplary taste in beehive wigs. Pictured: Wilson – looking like a J H Lynch painting come to life – photographed by Lynn Goldsmith in the early 1980s.

HALLOWEEN WITCH IMAGE TIN
SOLD $100 — Unusual, small tin litho product can for 'Haxan', featuring a great colorful trademark image of flying witch, with bat, fire, etc. in background. Has strong colors and displays pretty well, although there is some non-offensive scattered wear (C. 7.5/+). Not sure what product was, but my guess is it was possibly some kind of polish. Swedish. — 3.745 x 1-7/8" (dia.)
Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1971.

Royal Mail Postbag, mid- 19th century
Post was sent via Packet ships from Falmouth from the late 17th century till 1851. They were responsible for taking letters, official dispatches, news and bullion to pay troops all over the globe.
This mail bag was used on the packet ship, HMS Crane ( she was one of the last packets to continue to carry mail after much of the service was taken over by the Royal Navy in 1823 and the Royal Steam Packet from 1840) and is one of the original hand sewn canvas mail bags used on her. The letters were carried by the Crane and written and posted on 13 November 1849 from Rio de Janeiro, arriving in Falmouth in 1850.
