some people who know me might also know that i have an interest in language and linguistics. some other people might know that i have, to put it very mildly, an interest in the witcher books. still others might know that these interests combined have led to incredible frustration with the changes made by their official translations. that being said, i’d like to present my own fan translations of the last wish and sword of destiny.

i want to note up front that i’m not a native speaker nor am i polish, but i got some people who are native speakers and who are polish to look through these and to answer my questions, so i hope they’re not too bad. speaking of, many thanks to @karanfile and @nightimefairy, and also to the reddit thread about things lost in translation, which can be found here. many additional thanks in particular to the second for writing several emails for me that finally let me get my hands on physical copies of the polish books, without which this wouldn’t have happened, and to the first for quite a few long conversations about words and how hard they can be.

i apologize in advance for any mistakes, of which i’m sure there are many. and please let me know if you find them - i’ve been trying to catch them, the damned things.

Regis pinning Geralt

This was inspired by this work 《Fear》 on AO3, written by @hanzajesthanza

I cannot explain how much I love your work🥹, Regis and Geralt… They are so in character. I also love the scene where Geralt demonstrates a pirouette in front of Regis, saying “but I am more fearsome”. (To avoid spoiler I won’t say what happened next that made me laughing out loud in the middle of the night…)

Regis’s leathery wings🥹. According to several references the membranes should be red. But I felt it doesn’t quite fit into this “darkwoods with moonlight” ambience, so I drew them in black. Hmmm for some reason I think that probably made Regis appear more formidable? (Maybe?). Also, the anatomy of his claws is probably definitely wrong😓, but I really wanted to draw Geralt’s hand locked with Regis’s claws…

“You entered the clearing with bravado. And made quite the impression. But it wasn’t enough. After a brief clash, your sword was, oh… knocked out of your hand, oh. Your only weapon, your only defense. A little fragment of silver. And now,” he sighed, “you were entirely helpless…”

“I also keep a knife in my boot,” Geralt reminded him. “And these studs across my knuckles aren’t for fashion.”

“You couldn’t reach,” Regis waved the suggestion away, “He had you pinned.”

“To the ground? With his talons?”

“To the ground, to a tree. Whatever you like. Maybe you were rendered immobile with a gaze,” he mused.”
