Cal Lane (b 1968) is a Canadian sculptor, known for creating delicate, lacy sculptures out of industrial steel products.

Lane was born in Nova Scotia and raised on Vancouver Island, where she trained as a hairdresser and a welder. She has a bachelor’s degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a Master of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Purchase.

I wanted to create an image where several states coexist without ever fully settling. Two very close presences, almost absorbed into one another, crossed by something coming both from outside and within. I didn’t think of this image as a narrative scene. More as an apparition in progress, a fragile form trying to hold itself together. The fire behind them is not really a background. It is more like an unstable light, an energy contaminating the image and transforming the bodies. I like the idea of the image remaining open, never completely fixed.
