Hiii, I've been very infamous obsessed lately and read a bunch of theories and came upon a very interesting one and I want your opinion
"Chapter 4 laid out some interesting heavy hints: a) the band's audition was great, b) label's reaction -- silence instead of outright refusal -- was not typical. People up there are speculating it's 7 or other band members that have something to do with this, but it makes no sense. First, why would a label employee contact a random band member when they want to poach band's singer? It's really unlikely band went, like, "Lets give them Devyn's number and Seven's email and no other ways of contacting". Second, a secret like that is impossible to keep for three years when the band is as tight as it is and the former member has a grudge size of Jupiter.
Now, G openly admits they have a bit of obsession with MC's singing, and everyone assumes it started with BOTB audition tape; but what if it started even earlier, with *that* audition tape? G definitely has access to a lot of things in Heavenly Isle, including audition tapes.
Why would they fuck MC over? Might not be intentional - G took the tape to listen, got hooked, forgot to put it back before it was too late; might be misplaced attempt to "save" MC from becoming like them, remember that G is very unhappy.
And what lead me onto this train of thought was this scene from the prologue:
*${g} thinks for a second before saying, "Because"—${ghe} exhales out a self-deprecating laugh, scratching ${ghis} neck—*
*"I'm trying to figure out how much of an asshole I am."*
*Your eyes widen. "What?"*
*$!{ghis} hazel eyes flicker to you, face briefly dark before it melts into an easy smile. "Nothing. I may be a tad bit wasted." Though ${ghe} pinches ${ghis} fingers together and laughs, the sound isn't as carefree as you're used to hearing in interviews and on TV. On top of that, ${ghe} doesn't seem that wasted at all.*
*You expect ${ghim} to leave. Instead, ${ghe} lingers, gazing at you in a way that makes you feel like ${ghe}'s debating something. $!{ghis} casual demeanor loses its ease, replaced with something stronger, a sharper kind of awareness that has ${ghim} frowning before ${ghe} speaks again. "The thing is—"*
So clearly they did something that makes them feel guilty and they try to make it up by favoring the band. It adds up."
At first I was skeptical but their arguments are very good
Never heard it before tbh, but definitely an interesting take. You see, so many people are acting super shady in this story, it's hard to determine who is hiding what. I think most people support band/Seven being at fault theory because of the way the band acts around the fact that MC has talks with Seven and asks a lot of questions to make sure they weren't mentioned. And I did catch up on all these moments when Gina acted strange around MC, but I kind of went for the most straightforward answer of her favouring MC in general and also sort of using the band as a way to get rid of UW that didn't work.
That being said, there are also moments that I think might support this theory. This moment at the start you've mentioned is one of them. Then there's Gina snooping around MC's room and potentially going for their songwriting notebook. There's also a pool scene, but I can't really say what set me off there because it's a part of the patreon pov of it, but it's clear Gina gives MC a lot of attention for a specific reason, even if you don't romance her. For chapter 5 I can't remember if it only happens if you romance her or not, but there is that offer of writing a song together. So if we put these hints together, it does feel like Gina either sees MC as her pet project (VW's quote) or she does feel guilty about putting MC in a position they are in.
Tbh, after my first read, my thought kind of was that Gina was giving all of this special attention so later on she could use MC in her career. Insert a Blake's quote about Gina using ghostwriters here. But also! Every POV I've read makes it sound like Gina genuinely loves what she does, and loves music, so there's also a personal crack theory of mine that she very much can write her own songs, but they just wouldn't fit MA brand and might not be as popular with the public, so she doesn't even really get to do the thing she loves.
Anyway, I said a whole bunch of nothing, but I think all I have to say is that we have to wait and see!
