SO popular opinion about this song is that it’s about one of the many terrible guys jackie was semi-dating postfallout-gate. this is true of the fandom and of the band. iris, rowan, devyn, and jazzy all think it’s about this one dude who jackie really liked but was just terrible for her and she’s neither confirmed nor denied it but they also NEVER ASKED HER DIRECTLY. however this song is about seven fcking duckstein and it is the like most intense and honest thing jackie has probably ever written about him.

see this best friend line had all the duckbelle stans going ??? but the majority of people doubt jackie would ever write something painting seven in a bad light. there was the song nuisance but that one is much lighter than this one.

here i think jackie and seven had terrible communication issues. clearly neither of them ever talked about their real feelings and grievances, instead dancing around it. jackie has probably told seven like once “hey i feel a, b, and c” and he didn’t think she was being serious (because 1. she had like tried to bring these things up before but had done so in a joking manner and 2. bc they just DONT talk about feelings so candidly so why would she be?)

of course jackie’s anxiety had her thinking part of seven’s reasoning for leaving was because he found her annoying (literally was a constant fear during their friendship that she was too much for him). but instead of crying about it here jackie kind of owns it like YEAH i am a nuisance aren’t i???

the thing about this song is that jackie has never badmouthed anyone ever. and within the throes of postfallout-gate all the seven-stans see this like, backhanded song and are like jackie is EVIL. all jackie-stans are like this song isn’t even about seven!! it’s about jackie talking to herself and basically talking about her selfhate while posing as two separate people (something she does a lot) and in an interview she was like well yeah it’s about me and then the interviewer said something pointed that had her admitting the song was about seven too. chaos in the duckbelle fandom.

so for THIS. here’s some lore! i imagine jackie and seven as being from massachusetts (hence the title) and this song is about jackie reminiscing on the simpler time of their youth in massachusetts. the front porch line, i have this image of jackie and sev having lived in the same neighborhood and jackie often rode past his house on her bike. she knew this kid from class and wanted really badly to get to know him.

the waiting part (as theorized by every duckbelle stan) is in reference to the fact that jackie and seven never got together. they had chemistry and they had moments and love for one another but never acted on anything. then the chance died because they waited.

cut and dry jackie tried extending herself socially post-fallout. lots of parties, lots of friends, lots of people who she otherwise in a million years wouldn’t associate with. she knew this behavior was turning her into something she wasn’t, but it felt so good to be wanted in these spaces (and by the men she was hooking up with) and if they treated her horribly, she kind of thought she deserved it.
