but now that the knicks have WON it’s time for me to finally criticize the discourse surrounding the NBA finals in america every goddamn year which is that it blows up in SUCH a huge way but then it gets turned into this “oh cis straight men are about to have the best day of their life” thing.
and it gets pushed by women and queer individuals too???? i saw an interview by avantika where she was like ‘my instagram thinks i’m a cis straight man in his 50s i’ve just been getting basketball content for the past 2 weeks’ and another guest on a late night show recently was like ‘a straight person told me to say knicks in five??’
stop. pushing. this. goddamn. narrative. that. these. are. spaces. we. don’t. belong. in. and. don’t. WANT. to. belong. in.
i get asked a lot why i am such a huge fan of tennis and f1 which are certainly big in the US but aren’t “american” sports AND THIS IS A HUGE REASON WHY because sports fan discourse in america is stuck in fucking 50s i swear.
like i am à queer woman of color i continually deal with people reacting with shock and eventual displeasure that my love of sports isn’t a bit i’m checking the score at the bar i’m watching a live stream i’m not just a sports fan i’m a sports fan with bad etiquette i’m USELESS irl during a racing session
i’m doing all the things a sports fan does!!! i dedicate the same devotion to sports that all of our male friends do BECAUSE WE ARE ALL SPORTS FANS.
and it just infuriates me to no end when the “non-traditional sports fan” demo plays into the stereotype. like obviously i’d like us to stop BEING stereotyped my the broader media community and male sports fans but every single time the bit is played into on a massive platform it becomes harder and harder to mount an effective defense
