he didn't start out completely evil, but he was always a self centered loser. he made that waitress sit down and pretend to be nikki for him. his cat died because he was careless with his pills. and then he stuffs his dead, supposedly beloved, cat into a trash bag and tosses her before scrolling nikki's social media. when nikki talks about quitting the music shop, he's upset that she's "leaving him". he doesn't support her ambition, not if it means he doesn't get the access to her that he wants.

the first night she stays over, when the real nikki snaps back and freaks out he says "what the fuck, that really scared me, it made me think I did something you didn't like". guilt tripping her without even considering if she was okay or not. when he talks to Ian the next day he says "she really freaked me out, acting total psycho". not exactly the way you'd talk about someone you love going through a hard time.

a few times he lists off what he likes about her, and every time he starts with "youre beautiful". I struggle to think of a time he lists off a specific personality trait he ever liked about her. he doesn't even know what crystal she'd like. I bet she would've fucking loved that citrine. but he didn't get it because he didn't know her. he bought the willow "for her" but was too self absorbed to ever even say what it was.

even the wish. it's not that the willow is a cursed object. it isn't a monkey paw. if bear had wished anything else, anything that didn't force something on someone else, it would have been fine. he could have wished to change himself for her. he could have wished to be happy without her love. he could have wished to make her life better whether she loves him back or not. but he didn't want any of that. he wanted nikki to be his idea of the perfect girlfriend: a beautiful girl who's head over heels for him, and nothing else.

of course he didn't know the wish would actually work, why would it? but that assumption is what lets him be so selfish. because it obviously won't work, this is just a man doing some emotional venting, he says exactly what's on his mind. and what's on his mind is "Nikki is the problem here". and the one thing he wants more than anything is for her to change.
