Tim got a ring made from a strange metal, completely red, one that symbolized both of them. With a gemstone that, if anyone asks, he’ll say is a diamond. It isn’t. Tim wouldn’t use something as simple as a diamond. It’s a melted drop—hardened—from his future with Jason.
Traveling with friends from other worlds has its advantages.

Children don’t lie. They’re brutally honest. It was something Tim always knew, but it became undeniable when his younger self flooded him with old feelings, making the new ones—the ones he carried now—press even heavier against his chest.
Children aren’t afraid either. They say what they think without worrying about the consequences. Maybe that was the courage he needed to confess his feelings to Jason.
Tim: I like you. I’ve always liked you.
Jason: Oh, well... I haven’t always liked you. Jason lifts Tim’s chin with his hand, raising his face until their eyes meet—those beautiful blue eyes. But I definitely like you now.

Snowflakes drifted down from the sky, settling into Tim’s hair. The knit cap on his head didn’t cover him enough against the winter cold.
With gloves, a scarf, and a heavy jacket, he walked along the path he knew by heart. His steps dragged through the snow covering the sidewalk, slowing him down, but not stopping him.
He breathed slowly, the cold air burning in his lungs with every breath, his nose red from the wind cutting through the open space.
He tightened his grip on the small gift between his hands, shielding it from the snowflakes, keeping the moisture from ruining the wrapping. He couldn’t stay outside for long; they would start asking about him if he took too much time. And he didn’t want to give explanations no one understood.
Finally, he reached the place where his heart lay buried.
“Hi,” he whispered. He held out the gift with trembling hands, a small smile hidden behind his scarf. “Merry Christmas, Jason.”
Snow covered the grave. Alfred was busy with preparations, trying to make time to clean the marble later. Tim reached out, brushing the snow away from the letters carved into the stone. He couldn’t do much more; Alfred still hadn’t shown him how.
Maybe tomorrow, when the sun was higher and the snow had stopped, they could clean the grave together. Not now.
He made a small hollow in the ground and placed the little box on the grave.
“It’s not much. I bought it with my savings. But I hope you like it.”
He smiled, holding back the tears forming in his eyes. He had done this on his birthday. On Jason’s. On the first anniversary of his death.
It always hurt.
He was grateful that Alfred or Bruce took the gifts and hid them, giving Tim the illusion of a better reality.
The snow began to fall harder, and Tim shivered, unable to stop himself.
After brushing Jason’s name once more, tracing each letter carefully, he stepped back, breathing even though it hurt.
“See you on New Year’s,” he said, trying to let the emotion cover the pain in his voice.
Tim turned around and started back toward the mansion.
From the darkness behind him, the sound of footsteps circled the grave, a hand lifting Tim’s small gift with quiet amusement.
“Mmmh, New Year’s?” the man asked. His gaze stayed fixed on the boy leaving the cemetery. “I wonder what you’ll bring me this time.”
