All this Bengali stuff is making me absolutely giddy.

This has never happened to me before. In all these years of consuming western media, not a single one of my favourite characters has ever turned out to be Bengali. This is the first time. And Armand is not even a casual favourite character. He is in the top 1% of favourite characters, the crème de la crème of favourite characters. And for him to be Bengali?? I can't express in words what it means to me.

while valmor catered to black clientele and employed black artists, it was not a black owned company, and artist charles c. dawson (and later artist, jay jackson) never received proper credit for the artwork created for the company.

it is interesting that—despite the racial presentation of the black characters in these films—because the hays code hadn’t been enforced yet, pre code movies usually showed much more affection between black people than many mainstream movies would attempt in the decades to come (unless they were films made specifically for black audiences)

whether that’s a good thing or not isn’t really the point, given the racism and stereotypes of the time does make it hard to watch these films. the point is that the same reason black men and women could not be leading actors (tempting miscegenation) is the same reason they were portrayed with these extremes both before and after the code was enforced—and why, unless it was played for humor, entertainment, or it was a quick suggestion in the background, black characters didn’t show much romantic affection for each other in mainstream films.
