@replicae wanted to share a cigarette.
“You seem tense.”
Perhaps it was out of line, making such a comment, then again he was never all too good at keeping his mouth shut. Anyone could see that he was thinking, even behind dark shades lay a distant, brooding look that could not be ignored. Maybe it was out of line, plucking the cigarette from his lips to offer to the other. Yet in all the time he knew him, it seemed a constant for the other. That familiar scent of smoke seemed to follow him, almost as much as it lingered on his own person. Similar in that regard, the need to nurse their vices, to take the edge off when the world weighed on their shoulders.
“Here, something to take the edge off, eh?”
Got a smoke?
@ca1amities
“Lucky for you I do, and since I’m feeling so generous, I’ll give you a light to go with it.”
Such an offer wasn’t given so freely, not just to anyone, let alone done so with a smile lightly etched upon his features. Kindness these days felt a rare thing, seeing how being friendly wasn’t exactly normal in their line of work. Nice to have some sense of familiarity in such a bleak and dreary job- even if it didn’t last. Men like him were sent out on dangerous jobs all the time, those who were truly good managed to come around time and time again. Maybe he was one of the few he’d get to know, who wouldn’t become a nameless face or a mission asset like the rest.
The pack was offered his direction, a quick tap of the box on his wrist before handing them his way. “Pick your poison, amigo. You’re lucky you’ve got plenty to choose from…” A fresh carton was like a gift, the only one used dancing loosely between his lips as he’d speak. “Are you here for a new job? or to just stand around and look pretty-?”
@antiibow wanted to share a cigarette.
“I can tell you’re thinking,” his voice cut through the silence, a means of giving her warning as he’d approach from behind. She was something to admire, with how much she would endure day in and day out, and still manage to wear a smile through it all. Yet at the end of the day, she was only human, and even he knew she had her limits. Catching her outside gave them a chance to get away from it all, just the two of them. Gold plated lighter twirled idly in his hands, before snapping open and flicking a flame to life. One of his many habits he would never seem to break, the comforting, familiar scent of his favorite cigarette going up in soft plumes from his lips. Soon enough, he’d be at her side, stealing a sideways glance at her, before the smoke was offered her way. “Need something to take the edge off? Works for me- well, usually. Depends on the day really. Might help you take your mind off things, if something is bothering you, I mean.”

Still slowly chipping at starters in my drafts, also playing Far Cry 5 on the side and I need to fully write out my verse for him here.
@ghrahm wanted to share a cigarette.
“-Aren’t you a little young for this?” He couldn’t help but tease her, given the circumstances, and the hell they found themselves within. Her fears made sense, and in their moment of respite, how he couldn’t blame her for wanting to fall to the temptation. The scent lay strong, in his hair, his clothes, lingering in that safe haven they shared as they waited for Leon to return. Her request like a small act of rebellion- a secret to be kept between them. Who would have thought he’d be sharing a cigarette with the president’s daughter.
“Here-” The smoke was carefully offered between two fingers, his gaze surprisingly warm at the notion of her wanting to share such a moment. This is what he was fighting for, to make sure she made it home safe. She didn’t deserve any of this, the notion weighing as a heavy guilt upon his shoulders. No matter what happened, so long as she got out, everything would be worth it in the end.
“Just don’t tell Leon, eh? Last thing I need is him on my ass, calling me a bad influence. We’ve got to have our fun where we can have it, enjoy the little things in life while we can…” Why he would gladly be labeled the villain, if such a vice gave her some peace of mind. Still, he couldn’t help but grin, his tone light and playful as he couldn’t help but ask. “-Are you always this rebellious? You seem the type-”
do you want me to grab dinner?
@fortrauma
In their line of work, such a concept was almost a luxury, to have three meals a day, and more than a few hours rest if they were lucky. In truth? He’d grown accustomed to such a life, where time off was a concept so foreign, it could almost make him laugh. Men like them never got lucky, to lead a seemingly normal life. To think, how many years it had been since they met, and still nothing would change. Work, save the world, and get no pat on the back for it either. Well, it was Leon mainly that did the work, he was more so backup- support- intel and knowledge where it was needed. Even after so many years, he never thought himself worthy of being called a hero. He’d leave that title to him- the true knight in shining armor.
“I don’t see why not- and to think, they say chivalry is dead-” His tone always held that of a lighthearted tune, same crooked grin, lovingly nursing a cigarette with the full intent of making it his meal for the evening while on the job. “-Not with you, eh, Sancho?”
So many terms of endearment for the other, and still, he’d resort to what felt old and familiar, keeping it somewhat professional while on the made up clock they shared. His head would playfully tilt to a side, gracefully flicking away ash as he’d speak. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were asking me on a date- well, sort of. Usually a shared meal could be considered a date…” How many years had he played this game, as if every encounter was their first, his flirtatious nature a constant in their day to day.
Rain had began to fall, the sound of the city streets a constant hum in the background of their day to day. Such stark contrast to the life he once had- but being with him made it feel like home. Wherever Leon went, he was sure to follow, to hell and back if need be.
“You’ve got a deal, lover boy. You get dinner, and I’ll get the drinks, we call it even and head home, eh? Sound like a plan?”
⸸ 𝔣𝔦𝔫𝔞𝔩 𝔠𝔥𝔞𝔭𝔱𝔢𝔯 ; 𓆚 The sorrows of this world are without number, study your heart & know this to be true. Like a babe in the womb, the subjects of my kingdom need only drift about in tranquility. Why would you rob so many poor souls of their salvation ?

when’s the last time you had a full night’s rest?
@ofrequiem
“That is an excellent question-” In truth, he had no real answer for her. Sleep, in times like this, was the last thing on his mind. Not when there was so much at stake. A small price to pay when it came to ensuring both her and Leon were safe. Not that there was much action on his end, knowing it was Leon who took the brunt of the mission, despite his worsening condition. Still, he was there to lend aid, recon, filling the gaps between he and Sherry, boots on the ground where Sherry could not go- where Leon wouldn’t allow. A promise he’d made to her, to keep him safe, and to help save Grace along the way.
A part of him feared they wouldn’t make it out alive. That dread in the unknown, their encounter down below as they went dark. Thankful that backup came in time, and that he’d finally get to meet her face to face. Tattered, bruised, but alive, same as Leon- that’s what mattered in the end. His lack of sleep meant little in the grand scheme of everything.
Why he couldn’t help but laugh, one foot propped up on the bumper of the ambulance she sat upon. Around them chaos still ensued, the aftermath of the wreckage bringing in all kinds of support- Leon quickly jumped into action, despite his brush with death. He knew that would never change, both a gift and flaw to see him care so much. Meanwhile, he took to nursing the cigarette that hung loosely from his lips, mindful to blow the smoke the other way before he’d speak.
“This line of work isn’t exactly easy- I’m sure you’ve figured that out. A couple restless nights is worth it to see you two made it out safely. Unfortunately for me, my partner here never seems to want to rest- but it’s better than the alternative…” He was safe, alive. How he’d smile at the notion, his gaze shifting from the sight before them, down to the woman beside him. “How are you feeling? Given everything that’s happened, I can’t imagine how you must be feeling. You’re a hell of a lot stronger than most, I’ll give you that… Through hell and back, and handling it with such- well- Grace. Guess the name suits you after all, eh?”
she spent all morning scrubbing his blood out of her bathroom sink.
ada and @red9 are on their third day of quarantine together, and what a week it’s been. their haphazard stumble off the helicopter earned them an overnight stay at the connections’ finest facility, their stretchers side-by-side as they raced down the hall.
“so much for room service,” ada had jested in place of her nerves. luis made a sound that was more death rattle than laugh.
after much poking and prodding, their care team tentatively sent her home while they worked whatever magic they could on luis. truth be told, when ada collapsed into bed that night she had no idea whether or not he’d pull through; the organization had never been particularly forthcoming, and given she’d compromised the sample behind their backs, she wasn’t in a position to push just yet. she could only hope that whatever small good she did was enough to keep him alive.
and lo and behold, there luis stood like some half-beaten lazarus on her doorstep the following morning, the two researchers behind him nudging him in. they explained it in the clipped medical terms they always use— while luis succeeded in ridding himself of his previous infection, the metabolic waste las plagas left behind over time had spun a thick web of fibrin throughout his veins, resulting in a strange mix of regeneration and hypercoagulability. in any other case this would’ve meant an eventual end ( and probable resurrection ) for the parasite’s host; in his, it buoyed him long enough for ada to drag him to shore.
which led to her part in this story. while ada had gotten rid of her own specimen before it could fully attach, her bloodwork showed slightly decreased protein c and s markers. it wasn’t as bad as luis’, of course, but given he’d gotten rid of the parasite with much more finality than she had, there was, in their opinion, reason to worry.
“... and luis?” she’d asked, side-eyeing the ashen man leaning on her counter.
one of the researchers— a tall blonde woman— looked just as hesitant as her. “he knows las plagas better than anyone. quarantining you two together allows for mutual monitoring of symptoms.” she turned fully to ada then, her dark green gaze threatening to sever her in two. “we trust you know what to do if it progresses, 1301.”
and so it began, two goldfish swimming lamely around one other in their small, barren bowl. this apartment is her least favorite by far, tucked in some distant neighborhood of munich ada can’t remember the name of. she doesn’t come to this city unless she has to, but if last night was any indication, they were lucky they did. the blood thinner they’d given luis apparently did a number on him— he’d fallen over trying to change his dressings, leading to a mess of bloodied gauze across her floor, bathtub, and yes, her sink. ada was already awake, just as she’d been every night since she got home. her chest throbbed with each breath she drew in, and though the visions had long since passed, it hadn’t lessened the migraine they left behind. nevertheless, when he dropped to the floor, she was close enough to stagger into the scene.
they stared at each other for one long, heavy moment— ada's hand on the doorknob, luis’ fingers splayed over his stitches— as if the both of them were waiting for her to turn. but then she silently kneeled at his side, ripping open a clean pack of dressings. “hold still.” she commanded, and he listened. ( she’d come to learn he always did. )
now the morning, however draining it's been so far, is young, and ada stands at luis' doorway to watch him slowly come to. she leans against the frame to hold herself up, quietly studying him as he wheezes through the wound. “hey. how’re you feeling?”
A part of him had begun to think, it would have been easier to die. That’s how it felt, at least, lingering at death’s door like he was an old friend. There was some truth to that sentiment, the way death seemed to follow him everywhere he went. The beast that seemed to breathe down his neck, waiting for the moment he’d slip up. To think, it was his kindness that almost killed him- something rare and unfamiliar by his standards, knowing the risks involved. It was her he had to thank, knowing she had no reason to save him. It was the amber she’d needed- he was merely dead weight. And still, despite all logic and reason–
He was alive. How he’d left the island, he couldn’t recall. Life came in bits and pieces in the days that followed- ebbing and flowing, small details through the serenity of dancing with death. How it felt like sinking, drifting slowly beneath darkened, murky water. Everything was distant, and the pain nonexistent. Light and colors would come and go, yet the grasp of reality was always just out of reach. At times, it felt almost easier to let go, until a voice would echo in the back of his mind- telling him to hold on. Ada. That was the first word that came from his lips, waking in a cold and clinical room. Blood would follow, a violent, raging, coughing fit that seemed to settle in his lungs. The rest came in a blur, vitals taken, questions asked, but in the end none of that mattered. What mattered to him, was knowing she was okay. His questions were soon answered, arriving at her door.
He knew he wasn’t wanted, knew he was more of a burden than a blessing. Some things would never change in his life- knowing that to be true from the moment his mother passed a child. From then on, he only ever took up space. This time was no different. Why he’d try his best to recover in silence, and do what he could to stay out of her way. He didn’t want to invade her space, and if he had it his way, he wouldn’t have stayed at her place at all. With luck, he’d be gone within a week or two, and she’d never have to deal with him again. Unfortunately for her, his recovery wasn’t exactly easy. Try as he might to avoid her, there was only so much space for the two of them. The pain was worse before it got better, his healing a slow and painful process. Blood was a constant, and try as he might to tend to his own wounds- it was never easy to do alone. Thankful, for her kindness, even if he made a mess of everything he touched.
He couldn’t recall how he’d even made it to bed, didn’t remember ever falling asleep. The days all seemed to blur together, waking up at times to learn a day or two had passed. Why he’d lay there, staring at the ceiling, that soft, lingering rattle of blood never seeming to go away. A cough would shake him, forcing him to slowly roll himself off the side of the bed. His chest ached to try and catch his breath, so loud in the otherwise silent space. “Mierde-” Unaware she was even there, until her voice would break through the otherwise vacant space. Surprised at the gesture, never expecting her to check or care- but the gesture was appreciated, even if he never admitted it aloud.
“I’ve got to admit, I’ve seen better days…” His lighthearted tone still managed to come through, even as he’d wipe the blood he could taste from his lips. “Doesn’t even feel like I’m alive, if I’m being honest. Then again, if I was dead- I’m sure it would be a lot less painful than this…” A hand would raise to his shoulder, attempting to roll the muscles of his back, only to wince with sudden regret of doing so. “¡Joder-!”
Stitches would pull, blood would seep through gauze and bandage- same old routine, time and time again. The scruff of his beard began to grow long, hair unkempt and looking less than his best. A shame, being around a woman as beautiful as she. His eyes would eventually come to meet her own, uncertain of what she may have thought of him now, given the state he was in. Pathetic, weak, reckless, foolish, the list surely went on. Still, despite it all, he couldn’t help but let the question slip past his lips. “Why did you save me? You could have left me behind, saved yourself the trouble… You got what you wanted, and still you risked everything… to help me. Why-?”
RESIDENT EVIL 4 REMAKE (2023) ♡ dev. Capcom
“Why are you helping us?” // “Because it makes me feel better. Let’s leave it at that.”
it’s late into a warm spring afternoon, the sun staining the balcony of their apartment. ada’s lounging on the patio sofa with a novel in hand while luis leans on the balustrade, staring out into the city.
“i can hear you thinking from all the way over here.” she jests from an upturned corner of her lip, gaze following the tense line of his silhouette. she folds her book shut to cross behind him, hands running up his back so she can balance on her toes. kissing just below his ear, she murmurs, “what’s on your mind, mi amor?”
@opherative
He was a creature of a habit, tending to his vices whenever inconvenience would strike. Stress, apprehension, a means to ease his troubled mind if only for a minute or two. Muscle memory, the way the gold lighter would twirl between his fingers, the hinge worn from the repetitive flicking, lighting, and snapping it shut once more. Filter hung between his lips, the other end of the cigarette illuminating his features briefly as it glowed to life. Brief respite with each breath he’d take, the scent of familiarity clinging to his skin, his clothes, his hair- one of the only constants he ever seemed to have in his life.
She was a new one- unexpected, but welcome. In fact, she was the very reason he was still alive at all, a thought that lingered as a constant in the back of his mind. Heavier, on days like these, knowing what would await him come the next day. Assignments given that could not be ignored, knowing they would be apart for some time. It was the distance he’d grown to hate, yet knew why these demands were made. Still, it never made it any easier- the concern of the unknown leaving him lost in thought- her voice of reason cutting through the noise, bringing him back to the present.
“Really that obvious, eh?” He’d let his walls slip, that usual charming facade being his means of defense in a time like this. How in a moment it would return, that crooked smile gracing his features at the feeling of her lips, plucking the cigarette from the corner of his mouth, so that he might turn and embrace her fully. A hand would settle upon her waist, head dipping to place a loving kiss to her cheek in return- mindful of the scent that no doubt lingered being this close.
“Guess you could say I’m not ready for our little break to be over. I’m considering retiring young, settling on a beach somewhere that no one knows our names. This line of work isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…” Yet it was a cycle he knew he’d never break free from, and that’s why he couldn’t help but laugh, a soft hum stirring in the back of his throat like a purr as he’d pull her into a close embrace. A proposal would reflect his playful mood, his voice falling low and sweet as his head would tilt to meet her gaze. “Is it too soon to convince you to run away with me? No reason, no warning, just the two of us, riding off into the sunset together… put all this behind us. I think you and me, we deserve our happy ending, eh?” He could only hope and dream.
