the safehouse door opens without a sound, which tells arthur more than a knock ever would. his hand stills over the open field report, pen hovering above a half-finished note about cold-chain routes and missing tissue samples. the room smells like old dust, rainwater, and the cheap coffee he forgot to drink. he does not reach for his gun immediately, though his eyes flick once to the reflection in the dark window and catch the shape of red where no red should be. ada wong moves like a rumor deciding to become real. arthur exhales through his nose, tired and almost amused, though the faint gold at the edge of his eyes betrays the part of him already measuring distance, intent, and exits.

“ you know, most people use doors because they want to be invited in. ”

his gaze drops briefly to the folder tucked under her arm, then returns to her face. the corner of his mouth lifts, small and wary.

Josefina drums her fingers against the table, her brown eyes flickering to the door as she watches some boring presenter drone on and on about the monetary detriments of Blue Umbrella's existence. Ada, who's been sitting next to her, looks like she'd rather die than listen to his spiel. and, if she's being entirely honest? she doesn't blame her for thinking so. Had Josefina and Apolo been presenting, they'd be able to make things interesting, but they're only supposed to be listening tonight.

Ada has a couple shortsigns depending on who she’s speaking too. The usual one is fingerspelling A with one hand and then touching her other finger to her cheekbone, then pressing that same finger flat against the A and curling it inward (Sign for Spy)

hands moved in a practiced way, quick and without real thought the way a professional driver lazily maneuvers the wheel of a car. check the magazine, empty the chamber, fill it to bursting. click, thwip, click. as steady and as reliable as the beating of his heart.

"you know... my mother used to tell me --" clicked on the safety, wiped a bit of something GOOEY off of the barrel, let eyes flicker over to this woman that he knew little about. "-- you need three things in life: a wishbone, a backbone, and a funny bone." now that his heart wasn't beating solely in his ears and they've had a moment to REST in this small, musky room, hercules could actually try to begin to THINK about their predicament...

and also now had the time to worry about the predicament that was this woman.

THEY'VE BEEN TREADING THIS DANGEROUSLY THIN LINE BETWEEN ENEMIES AND SOMETHING MORE FOR YEARS NOW. it's an achingly familiar game they know all too well --- a never - ending cycle that ebbs and flows between them --- with no true winner ever set to stake their claim [...] yet, with that, one question remains : could he ever win when it came to ada wong? for a while it had felt like he was just another pawn on her chessboard, a means to an end to reach the final checkmate. it would come as no surprise, really, because wasn't it always supposed to be this way? their lives entwined by fate, separated by choice?

( maybe, he thinks. but can the rook really live without its queen ? )

THE LIMITED SPACE BETWEEN THEM HEATS UP UNDER HER INTENSE GAZE, and leon falters in his stoicism, a scorching fire of want lighting the embers in his stomach and setting his insides aflame. no matter how hard he tries, the softened spot of his heart reserved for the lady in red bleeds through the leather of his jacket, splattering across every inch of him and painting his features with a visible gentle affection.

" is that what you want? " he yearns to reach for her hand, to hold steady and ground himself to the here and now, to test if she'd really stay this time. but he can't, he knows he shouldn't, and digits flex at his sides as he resists the urge to brush his pinky against her wrist. there's something searching in his gaze as his tired eyes flit across her features, body yielding to the gravitational force that draws them in to each other's orbit. he's so close that he can catch the subtle perfume she always wears and it leaves him feeling dizzy, a strange lightness filling his lungs as he dares to hope for once, his tone raspy and low. " do you want me to stay, ada? "

say yes, and i'm all yours.

“i can hear you thinking from all the way over here.” she jests from an upturned corner of her lip, gaze following the tense line of his silhouette. she folds her book shut to cross behind him, hands running up his back so she can balance on her toes. kissing just below his ear, she murmurs, “what’s on your mind, mi amor?”

He was a creature of a habit, tending to his vices whenever inconvenience would strike. Stress, apprehension, a means to ease his troubled mind if only for a minute or two. Muscle memory, the way the gold lighter would twirl between his fingers, the hinge worn from the repetitive flicking, lighting, and snapping it shut once more. Filter hung between his lips, the other end of the cigarette illuminating his features briefly as it glowed to life. Brief respite with each breath he’d take, the scent of familiarity clinging to his skin, his clothes, his hair- one of the only constants he ever seemed to have in his life. 

She was a new one- unexpected, but welcome. In fact, she was the very reason he was still alive at all, a thought that lingered as a constant in the back of his mind. Heavier, on days like these, knowing what would await him come the next day. Assignments given that could not be ignored, knowing they would be apart for some time. It was the distance he’d grown to hate, yet knew why these demands were made. Still, it never made it any easier- the concern of the unknown leaving him lost in thought- her voice of reason cutting through the noise, bringing him back to the present. 

“Really that obvious, eh?” He’d let his walls slip, that usual charming facade being his means of defense in a time like this. How in a moment it would return, that crooked smile gracing his features at the feeling of her lips, plucking the cigarette from the corner of his mouth, so that he might turn and embrace her fully. A hand would settle upon her waist, head dipping to place a loving kiss to her cheek in return- mindful of the scent that no doubt lingered being this close.

“Guess you could say I’m not ready for our little break to be over. I’m considering retiring young, settling on a beach somewhere that no one knows our names. This line of work isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…” Yet it was a cycle he knew he’d never break free from, and that’s why he couldn’t help but laugh, a soft hum stirring in the back of his throat like a purr as he’d pull her into a close embrace. A proposal would reflect his playful mood, his voice falling low and sweet as his head would tilt to meet her gaze. “Is it too soon to convince you to run away with me? No reason, no warning, just the two of us, riding off into the sunset together… put all this behind us. I think you and me, we deserve our happy ending, eh?” He could only hope and dream.
