hi!! if you feel like it, claire/alex (from spn duh), relieved
Alex wakes with iron in her mouth. A chime, caught just after it should've been, as her front door's not-that-expertly picked. She licks her lips and blinks at the ceiling. Sweat clammily sticking her legs together and her arm hot over her own stomach and the past climbing up her spine—but there was the chime, and she rolls out from under the sheet to the far side of the bed, where despite her objections there's a shotgun and a silver knife in a sheath belted to the bedframe and, if all else fails, a wooden bat. If it breaks it turns into a stake. Handy. She crouches behind the double-stack of boxspring and mattress and breathes silently through an open mouth and listens—
—something heavy's set on the wicker chair, from the creaking; bootheels on the wooden floorboards, quiet but not sneaky; the lipsmack of the fridge door opening as the sloppy rubber flange unseals, and a sigh, and then the door closes again and there's a crack of aluminum and, okay, that settles it.
"Should charge you for that," Alex says, leaning into the bedroom doorway.
"For a diet root beer? You should be paying me to take it off your hands. Get better taste."
"Maybe if you had a job you could buy something you like to keep in my fridge," Alex says, and Claire mouths the last part back to her sarcastically but she takes another swallow from the can anyway, so.
Three twenty-two on the microwave clock. Alex taps on the over-the-stove light, grabs the kettle. Leans hard against the counter while she fills it, watching the gleam of the water level rising. Her heart thudding high in her throat but slowing.
"You got a shift today?"
"It's Wednesday," Alex says, which should be an answer, but there's silence from the other side of the kitchen and she shakes her head, turns off the tap. "Yes. Like every Wednesday, and every Thursday and Friday, too."
"So I didn't wake you up too early, then," Claire says, and Alex kind of wants to throw the full kettle at her head but that would just compound her many and various types of damage, and so she sets the kettle on the front burner and flicks it on to boil and only then turns around and looks, in the half-light, to see what else has been added.
Claire dropped her jacket along with her duffle on the chair and she's leaned with her ass against the island, looking down at the pop can and thumbing the tab. Not many injuries Alex can see. Scrapes on her cheek and jaw that won't need stitches; bruises on her bare arm, peeking from under the torn tank, but when isn't Claire bruised. "Blood loss? Broken bones?" Alex says, and Claire shakes her head, and Alex's tipped-over heart shudders and finally settles. Claire's still staring at the pop can and Alex tips her head, trying to see her expression. "No details. Good or bad?"
A deep breath, Claire's shoulders rounding out. "It's not a Netflix Original," she says. Then shakes her head, and puts the can on the counter, and folds her arms loosely over her stomach, and puts on something that could kind of be a smile if you'd read a description of one in a magazine. "Um, I don't know. Maybe sixty-forty."
Alex sucks her lower lip between her teeth. Claire looks at her face and the smile falls off like it was never there, and she looks away. Just as well, because a rush of heat comes to the back of Alex's eyes and things go blurry, for a second—for reasons she knows, and refuses to call stupid after how long she's worked to have a perfectly normal reaction to Claire's awful life and awful choices—but she's also worked very hard to be calm, and steady when that's needed, and she takes a deep breath and the blur goes away and she crosses the kitchen and wraps her arms solidly around Claire's shoulders, puts her lips to Claire's neck and breathes her nasty sweat-blood-gunsmoke-death smell, and says, "You came back," and when Claire takes a weird shudderly breath and clumsily unfolds and gets her hands on Alex's waist, Alex says, quieter: "That's good. In case you were wondering."
"Yeah, I was real worried about it," Claire mumbles, and then hugs her back for real. Alex kisses the skin in front of her and then slides her mouth up to under Claire's ear, and then to her temple, stroking Claire's hair back. In return she gets Claire's breath hot and living against her cooling sweat and Claire's hands sliding back down to her waist and then up, under the hem of her too-big sleep shirt, and it's been—eleven days, since Claire left on the trail of something Alex refuses to ask about, because she doesn't want to know even if imagination is something that can fill every shadowed corner of the apartment with things worse than what's real, and Alex has seen enough of what's real for a lifetime—eleven days of dreams getting worse, and memory roaring up, and texted check-ins getting further apart, until you start to think, maybe it'll be the dark basement after all, and the blood spilling to fill the cracks in the earth, and life dwindling into the smallest spark, so easy to snuff out.
The kettle whistles. Alex takes a deep breath and Claire ducks and cups her face and kisses her, sour and sweet with the metallic fake sugar of the root beer and the hard press of bone, because Claire always kisses her too hard at first, like she's worried she'll only get the one chance and she wants to make it count. Alex takes it, her heart turning over one more time. Then she touches Claire's chin with her thumb and pulls back, kisses her softer—then again, because Claire made kind of dumb with the weariness after a hunt and wanting her is so endearing Alex just can't help it—and then she pulls Claire's hands out from under her shirt and says, "We're gonna wake up the whole building," and Claire says, "So what, they should wake up, day's wasting," and Alex rolls her eyes and goes to turn off the stove. Kettle steaming, warm. She was thinking chamomile, honey.
Claire covers her back, her hips pressing against Alex's ass. Warm, too, through Claire's stained jeans and Alex's panties. "Your shift doesn't start until six," Claire says, memory apparently working again. True. Alex usually wakes up at five, though, for a quick shower and a cup of tea with the morning birdsong before the drive to the hospital—and she should really be responsible, go back to bed. Should be the adult in this relationship, if one of them is going to be.
The bed's been full of memory, though, and Claire's half has been empty, and Claire's also sliding knowing fingers down the front of Alex's panties, her lips plush against the nape of Alex's neck. Alex moves the kettle to the rear burner to cool. "You get an hour," she says, firm. Against her skin, Claire grins.

Protect me from what I want Protect me Protect me
what an absolutely beautiful piece of art, with a shimmering quality to it, like dusk on a hot day. that slight magical blur is a powerful addition and the red overlay on the lineart is almost erotic. there is incredible charge in the way they can't meet each other's eyes.
i love the form of the forearm muscles and knuckles and the shape of their lean. and i'm especially enchanted by sam's ugly patterned shirt (i'm saying this affectionately).
there is so much unspoken in this drawing, much like the plea the artist offers in the caption.

fandom: the terror pairing: tozer/little word count: 7671 tags: somebody lives/not everyone dies, hurt/comfort summary: 'Edward swallows, hard. How is he? He eats, mostly. Sleeps too much. A slanted shack on the Scottish coast, an ex-Lieutenant, an ex-Marine, and a letter.
rec note: tender convalescing in a scottish cottage, tender like a bruise! i really enjoyed little's fatigue and the progression of intimacy between tozer and him amidst all their worn-down furniture. this story has some real oof, heart-squeezy lines but also left me with a stupid grin on my face. and i guess i'll always be weak for an 'at least tell me to stop' moment.
happy wincest wednesday!! you used a crowley gif so ..what did he hear in 5x20 that convinced him they were together?
Absented from the playing field he may be, but Crowley sees no reason not to keep the radio tuned to the broadcast. As it were. The morons really are blundering their way to the apocalypse but he thinks, hopes, prays (or whatever passes in his crippled heart as praying) that they manage to pull through. He really has zero interest in finding out what fresh sort of torture Lucifer may invent if he wins; Michael's victory, so far as he can imagine, won't be much more pleasant. His imagination, unfortunately, is rather good.
The morons manage not to give up the Michael sword to heaven. Barely. Crowley's on the run from half of hell and isn't terribly impressed. A charming bungalow in the Seychelles, cheerily bright for tourists, is his most recent hideout, and he closes his eyes against the sunlight and holds the charmed coin between his hands and his mind flows across oceans and continents to -- good heavens, a stretch of abandoned highway not far from Van Nuys, California, where it's a dark midnight and that ridiculous beast of a car is parked under a tree, hidden even from the stars, and he hears:
Seriously, you okay? // Stop asking. // Just checking in, man. I mean, I don't know if your lungs bleeding is a weekly thing for you but it seems, you know. Not great. // Dean, I'm fine.
Typical. Talking about their feelings, per tedious usual. Very little makes Crowley more relieved to be a demon than hearing humans go on about their bleeding little hearts.
What are we going to do? // I don't know. Going out with a bang was pretty much my only play. Don't suppose Lucifer'd be cool with deciding the whole apocalypse thing over a game of checkers. // Dean-- // Or, I don't know. Yatzhee.
A laugh. Very short.
I was so... pissed at you. // I know. // Like, really. Like, if Cas hadn't done it for me I might've tried to pound your face in. You've just... // I've what? // I don't know. Not like you don't got every right, but... you've been scaring me, man. How you haven't been...
A longer pause. Hasn't been what, Crowley wonders. Dancing? Practicing his Estonian? A rustle, and then a sharp hiss of breath, and then this scratching noise. Stubble.
Been a long time, Sam. // You remember? The last... // Before I went down. 'Course I do. In Colorado Springs, that motel with the... cowpoke motif. A/C was busted and I think you were trying to fuse with my back, or something. Woke up welded together, practically. // I know it's -- it's screwed up, man, and I know I haven't -- if you didn't want -- // Sammy-- // I'm just saying I miss it. Miss you. Feels like -- I don't know. If it all falls apart I don't want to regret this. // This isn't a 'let's screw before the world ends' speech, is it? Because, Sammy -- // I mean it. I'm sorry. But I really do. // I know you do.
Stubble, again, and -- ah. Mouths, tongues. Wet. Love, or whatever passes for it. Crowley can't see but he can imagine -- both big men, clinched there on the seat of that absurd car, gripping and grasping and pulling at each other's jackets, and shirts, and now -- yes, belts, jeans. Et cetera. Not exactly a surprise, considering everything else about them that he's ever seen or heard or known, but a bit bold to commit incestuous buggery when all of heaven and hell are looking to chew them apart. He'll give them this: it has panache.
Smiling makes more sense to Dean than any of the long meaningful therapizing looks that Sam keeps giving him or, god help him, Bobby's schtick about how being a Hunter means not being a person. Dean still feels like a person, just a fucked-to-hell one who can't stop seeing the long line of his inadequacies straight out the door and on till sunrise. Frank might not know him but Frank knows ... something, about what it's like, about your biggest life loss coming at age twenty-six and the one-foot-in-front-of-the-otherness of everything that comes after.
Frank's also something new and a little odd but Dean doesn't mind odd when it comes with a never-ending parade of pet names that are rolled in that sour candy coating so they're just this side of cloying, a little sarcasm to take the sugar off. He's not into psychedelics much but with Frank he's curious about the old guy's bag of tricks, so he says fuck it one time and drops acid with the geezer. It's, predictably, odd; Frank spools on and on about his routine and all the steps he's employed to keep on truckin' and by the time he's giving Dean that shiatsu massage he'd mentioned, Dean's still curious so he leans into it.
Twelve minutes later he's not altogether sure if his tianshu meridian is any better for the way Frank's rolling his knuckles against Dean's stomach, but sixteen minutes after that, Frank's fucking him nicer than a lot of people do and Dean mumbles, "i'm the one paying you, y'know," and Frank stares at him with one hand cupped at the base of Dean's skull and says, "listen, poodle, at our level of transaction nothing's a one-way street so lie back and let me get my kicks," and that sounds reasonable enough so Dean sinks his hips back further in the cot and lets it all be easy, for once, easy as it gets for somebody like him. His head jostles a little in the cup of Frank's palm with each rolling thrust and Dean opens and closes his mouth and looks up at the ceiling and doesn't see Amy's face and her cat eyes, or Bobby's face and his sadness, or anything at all. Maybe fire, rolling in. Maybe not. "Mom," he says, experimentally, and Frank slows for a minute, then gently moves his hand from behind Dean's head and covers his eyes with it.
"Thank you," Dean rasps. Frank doesn't say anything, His thumb sweeps along Dean's forehead once, twice. Sweet one way and sour the other.

spn fic: Flicker
A belated kris kringle mingle fic for the talented @thegoodthebadandtheart.
Relationships: Sam & Dean Winchester Rating: Mature Tags: Outsider POV, Canon-typical violence, Season 11 Length: 3,111 words Summary: A snapshot of a hunt by the hunted.
Fic preview:
Headlights. The creak of a car door. It’s dark, cold. The brush of a fading feeling of recognition. Wait, where is she? In the woods. On the edge of a parking lot? Gravel and melting snow and walls of trees. Watching a tall man step from the passenger side of a car. A sleek, black beast. The headlights cut out. A second man joins the first.
Her body feels strange. Her head full of pressure and smoke. It hurts, or she thinks it does. Dull on the back of her head. Her ears are ringing. She smells pine and metal, copper or iron. Is that blood? She sees a flash of red splattered across concrete, like the memory of a dream. Something spikes in her heart—it’s beating so strangely—twisted up and tight like fear. Dread. Something happened. She needs help.
There's a moment of instinctual hesitance. Dangerous for a woman alone to approach men in the dark. But something happened. Something—
Help, she needs—she stumbles forward, says, “help,” quieter than she means to. She needs to yell it. Feels like it’s been bottled in her throat for hours, for days.
“Help.” Her voice is a croak, sounds—forced. She cringes away from the idea, sees a flash of her own face in a mirror. Flickering fluorescents and a smile that’s all wrong. How did she get here?

It's a sigil, some weird language neither of them recognize, two inches more-or-less square seared onto Dean's chest under the no-demons-allowed tat, right over his heart. Between that and the fun little gift from Cain, he's starting to feel crowded.
"Why there," Sam says, the jackass. Dean takes in a breath and Sam immediately looks sorry, says, "Wait—"
"Magical sigils tend to follow the ley-fields of the human body," Dean says, "so they can take advantage of belief foci: head, heart, hands, genitals, clusters of veins and nerves. In this case the sigil is inscribed in the place of greatest meaning for the witch who designed it."

fandom: supernatural pairing: sam/dean, smith/wesson word count: 3266 tags: s4, it's a terrible life, pining summary: Dean Smith's gone, discarded like the plaything he was, and Dean Winchester is supposed to move on.
rec note: a lovely, aching post-s4e17 offering that has dean grappling with the fact that smith and wesson hooked up. i greatly enjoyed the introspection along with the pining and the exploration of dean smith as a part of dean. it feels lonely, being dean, in this fic but it's not hard for me to imagine sam working through his own brand of denial so that the two of them might figure themselves out at some point.
sigh. it's "being sad about cas time"
i absolutely love how this art piece captures the fluttery-chaotic quality of a startled flock of birds. the strong textured strokes, the hasty overlap of colours, the vivid blue of a sky.
the quote that is featured here is from s14e09 in which cas reassures jack that the empty deal won't come through because, well, see above.
there is weariness to the slope of cas' shoulders here, as well as a loneliness with the way he is set into an otherwise non-specific background.
he is turned away from the viewer, resigned to keeping the secret of his deal from the winchester brothers. however this drawing does not feel overtly heavy in its pastel light colour scheme - there's melancholy here, but acceptance, too. and i think it's all the better when you realise that acceptance is how cas ends up weaponizing the deal with the empty, too. the wings - the fluttering of the birds - exist at the intersection of fight and/or flight. perhaps i'm reading too far into it, but the multiple wings also remind me of the other angels, i.e. cas' family, that are obviously a huge root of conflict in his life from beginning to end.
the artist wasn't aware of how supernatural would end for cas when they posted this art (april 29, 2021) but it's coded into the drawing anyway. it was 'being sad about cas time' back then and hey, it can be again.

fandom: supernatural pairing: sam/dean word count: 5235 tags: s12, unresolved sexual tension, with a mutually acknowledged inevitable resolution, bathing/washing summary: Dean used to do this for Sam, when he was small and Dad was gone. When no one else was there. When their mom was in the ground instead of down the hall, and Sam had Dean and Dean had―memories, of someone doing this for him. Maybe. It's all shaky before the fire. Maybe he just made that bit up. Or, in the aftermath of Mary coming back, Dean takes stock of how they're doing.
rec note: a wonderful exploration of that space of almost/not yet of later season sam and dean. this fic is so delightful for the physical contact between the boys, for letting dean stick to his gadreel choice, for the hurt and for the comfort and for that reliable foundation they've built with each other over time. and mary is there, somewhere, in the background. maybe.

fandom: supernatural pairing: sam/dean word count: 13708 tags: injury recovery, curtainfic summary: On the morning that Sam woke up, Dean ran five red lights on the way to the hospital, his half-empty coffee cup sloshing in the holder.
rec note: i thoroughly enjoyed the vividness of their life during sam's recovery, but even more so the fear and denial that's in the getting together. and i'll yell a hundred yays for a story that has the meat of a curtainfic but also an ending that doesn't have sam and dean abandon hunting.
for a happy wincest wednesday, feel free to send me a theme/trope etc and i'll (hopefully be able to) rec some fic that fit the bill!
