For a high street brand I sometimes use Garnier Pure Active. When I started using this I saw my skin change drastically within a week. It cleared up a lot and made my skin very smooth and soft. I was originally recommended this product by a few of my friends as they had the same results too. For a cost effective easy product I would definitely recommend this product.

This exfoliator claims its Pore-unclogging, flaky skin-smoothing and radiance-boosting, all in one pea-sized amount, massaged in circles around the face. The reviews on this product have been very promising stating that it has left their skin silky smooth even with the first use. Its also doesn’t dry your skin out like some scrubs can.

An oil based, 100% natural, multi-purpose polisher and cleanser, this one is brilliant for balancing dry and sensitive – or sensitised – skins, that need a little extra TLC. Sumptuously scented with camellia, kukui nut and rosehip oils and hydrating cocoa, mango and shea butter, it dissolves daily grime without stripping away the skin's natural oils.

Two shakes of this powdered exfoliator mixed with a palmful of water makes a hard-working but gentle scrub to polish away dull dry skin and reveal a more luminous complexion. The reviews on this have been good but it is a very harsh exfoliator so I wouldn’t recommend using it all the time, just once a week.

Drying out combination skin can lead to over-drive in oil production, but this Vitamin E-packed formula is mild enough for skin prone to oily breakouts. The reviews for this one have been mixed but mainly good. I think if you want a fairly good scrub at a very good price then this is the one. However its been said that the beeds don't leave your face feeling as clean as it would with a more expensive scrub, but it does not dry out your skin like some face creams and scrubs bought from the supermarket.

Buffing Grains for Face are made to sound special because you can add these loose grains to any cleanser to create a custom scrub. The novelty may be fun, but this concoction is simply polyethylene beads (plastic beads) with adzuki bean powder and tiny amounts of plant oils, plus a detergent cleansing agent that is activated by water. This one has had a lot of good reviews and in plenty of top scrub lists.

Aromatherapy Associates Enzyme Peel, is rich in replenishing vitamin E and youth preserving antioxidants. Whipped up with pineapple and grape fruit acids it gently sloughs away dead skin cells, before a drop of carrot oil sinks in beneath the skins surface to help diminish the tell-tale signs of ageing. This product has popped up on quite a few top exfoliator lists, claiming to leave skin smooth and clean with a lovely aroma smell.

Ultra-fine but hard-working, Clarins' Gentle Refiner Exfoliating Cream will refresh and revive dull skin. Great for those with large pores and an uneven skintone, this scrub will refine the texture of your skin to reveal a smooth and flawless base.

Clinique's famous 7-day Scrub Cream is great for all skin types, leaving a soft base to apply make-up. Moisturiser is more easily absorbed and skin looks brighter and more radiant with regular use.

A lot of people spend quite a bit on branded face exfoliators. However there are a fair amount of homemade concoctions that you can easily make at home and are sometimes much better for your skin.

Why do we need to exfoliate?

New skin cells are created in the skin’s inner layer (dermis). As they form form, the old, dead skin cells are pushed to the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). These dead cells gradually flake off. But some of them hang on for too long, making your complexion look dull & rough and clogs your pores causing acne & other blemishes. Exfoliating the skin removes these dead cells.

Top 6 Best Natural Exfoliants

1.Baking Soda

Baking soda is my personal favorite. I exfoliate my face with baking soda daily. I keep a container in my shower and rub about a tablespoon of it on my face in a circular motion, rinse, then wash my face with this liquid natural soap. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is the main ingredient in many expensive exfoliation products. Be sure to use a natural baking soda like this one. Find out more about the quality of your baking soda here. I also use baking soda in my toothpaste, deodorant, and no poo haircare.

2.Sugar

Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid. Glycolic acid boosts new cell production and breaks down the protein that keeps the dead cells hanging onto your skin. Pure can sugar crystals work best, like this one. Mix the sugar crystals with your favorite massage oil (olive, jojoba, grapeseed, almond, etc.) to make a paste. Scrub on your face in a circular motion, rinse, wash as usual. I use sugar for an exfoliant for my lips as well because it tastes a lot nicerthan the others. I mix it with a few drops of golden syrup or honey and gently scrub my lips. It works wonders, tastes nice and is very quick and easy!

3.Sea Salt

Sea salt is full of trace minerals that rejuvenate your skin, stimulate cell growth, and help your skin retail moisture. A sea salt scrub is great for dry skin. Mix with lavender essential oil and/or your favorite massage oil (olive, jojoba, grapeseed, almond, etc.) to make a paste. Scrub on your face in a circular motion, rinse, wash as usual.

4.Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a very gentle exfoliant, so it’s perfect for sensitive skin. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and is very moisturizing. Mix finely ground oatmeal with honey and/or kefir (you can also use yogurt or buttermilk). Scrub on your face in a circular motion, let sit for 15-30 minutes, rinse, wash as usual.

5.Kefir

Kefir is like yogurt, but with a lot more beneficial bacteria (about 40 times more). Find out more about kefir here (and how to make it). You can use yogurt and still see benefits, but you will see better results using kefir. Kefir is a natural source of lactic acid that hydrates and soothes your skin. Apply to your face and let sit for 15-30 minutes, rinse, wash as usual. Your skin will be so soft and smoothe for several days.

6.Honey

 Now my last post was about home remedies for dark circles under your eyes, this one is a list of the top 10 high street products that myself and others have rated very high and are very popular at the moment.

10. Clinique All about eyes

Happy New Year everyone! Now after all the Christmas and New Year festivities most people will look in the mirror and think they look worse for wear. Fear not! This first post is about how to get rid of the pesky dark circles under your eyes easily and cost effective. Nothing frustrates us more than dark circles. Even after layers of the best concealer and strategic use of highlighter, some dark circles just won’t quit. As much as we love make-up, covering up the problem doesn’t exactly help to get rid of it. Here are some home remedies that will certainly do the trick!

1.CUCUMBER

The cooling properties of cucumbers make them effective remedies for dark circles. You can apply it on your eyes to diminish darkness and swelling. Slice or grate the vegetable and place the slice over the eyes. You can also use the juice and dab some with a cotton ball. You can even leave the remedy over night for better results. It is advisable to apply juice on the affected area rather than placing slices over the eyes.

2.Tea Bags

Tea bags are also considered a beneficial treatment for dark circles. You probably have noticed that many eye treatments contain caffeine. This is because caffeine can help shrink blood vessels around your eye, thus reducing puffiness and dark circles. Place a used tea bag in the fridge until cold, then leave on your eyes for 15-30 minutes, whatever is best for you. Then just pat your eyes dry and you will see your eyes rejuvenated!

3. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are highly effective. You can prepare a mixture using one teaspoon of fresh tomato juice, half a teaspoon of lemon juice, a pinch of turmeric and gram flour. Apply it gently under the eye and leave it for ten minutes before rinsing it off.

4. Almond Oil

Another effective and one of the most popular remedies to remove dark circles is almond oil. Apply almond oil around your eyes and massage it in to get proper blood circulation around the eyes. This in turn helps to clear the dark circles completely from the skin. You can also mix it with a tablespoon of honey, two drops of jasmine, three slices of avocado or chamomile oil to help the skin even more.

5.Mint

Crushed mint is a good option for treating under eye dark circles. It gives a cooling effect and immediately soothes tired eyes, which helps reduce dark circles. Place crushed mint leaves around the eyes and leave it for a while. Wipe off the residue with damp cotton.

6.Water

Water is the most essential component and the pillar of all remedies. It promotes proper blood circulation around the eyes and prevents blood accumulation. Drink around eight to 10 glasses of water daily to flush off toxins and have a healthy skin.
