I wonder if there are any papers on emoticon culture and how it’s changed over the years. For example, I tend to use a lot of grins after I tell a bad joke or share a fun story to indicate how much I like something, but I’ve also seen people use multiple emoticons in order to indicate nastier undertones to otherwise nice sentences. And I’ve noticed an increase in people who have a tendency to interpret emoticons as being mean even in the singular use.

Like, I definitely share the fear of sounding mean and I know for a fact that I can have my comments misunderstood even by people who know me, so yeah, it’s hard. I use the winky face a LOT so people know I’m kidding, but now there’s the burden of “do they know my wink means I’m kidding or do they think it’s a version of the middle finger?”

I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. Using emojis is seen as unprofessional so if I’m discussing something serious, I don’t use them, only to have people tell me I come across as bitchy even if I take care to word things to sound friendly. Yet if I DO use emojis people say I’m being sarcastic and not taking things seriously. Can’t communicate with them, can’t communicate without them. Guess we’re all doomed to always have our tone misinterpreted online. 🙃

So, it’s come to my attention that it seems the search for “chr*n*c p**n” is a part of the removed term in what Tumblr has done recently (altering the words myself in case it might be subject to the pull as well). If searched, only one or two posts are shown but if you go to “recent posts,” it shows nothing. It likely has to do with the search’s initials being ‘awfully similar’ to the material being cleaned from the site that caused all this in the first place (as one user I saw suggest), which is unfortunate if true…

How long will this last? This is damaging. Very damaging… this affects the menhera community especially. We’re here for emotional support, and to vent when we need it, we just want to have a support system and work for our better health.
