Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as âproblematicâ in class and our professor was like, âThatâs cool, but âproblematicâ doesnât really mean anything. It means that the thing youâre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatâs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itâs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youâre trying to say that this is bad, but you donât want to say âbad.â Is that right?â
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the âbadâ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, âIâm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.â
Once we stopped calling things âproblematicâ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, âthatâs racistâ or âthatâs misogynisticâ or âew capitalism grossâ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, âUhhh... Iâm not sure whatâs so bad?â and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canât help but think of this professor being like, âGood starting point, now letâs get specific.â I think when we have to commit to saying âthatâs ___â it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weâre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itâs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatâs what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)
Literally cannot believe I was ever scared of getting older like this is awesome. Learning so many new things about myself & reacting to things that used to get under my skin so differently. This is so sexy.
Reducing the calories does not inherently increase the healthiness of your food.
Reducing the fat content does not inherently increase the healthiness of your food.
Reducing the sugars does not inherently increase the healthiness of your food.
The only way to increase the healthiness of your food is by adding additional nutrients to it.
I saw a video of someone complaining that fucking chicken tikka masala "wasn't healthy" so they made a "healthier version" that was, in fact, LESS HEALTHY. Because they made it with only fat free dairy products, rendering many of the vitamins they would have otherwise gotten from that meal utterly useless, because the body needs fats in order to absorb them properly.
Two tbsp of brown sugar does not render a meal "unhealthy." Full fat dairy products do not render a meal "unhealthy." Calorically dense foods do not render a meal "unhealthy."
If you're really concerned about your health, add more nutrients. Eat extra veggies or extra protein. But you're not actually worried about your health. You're worried about your weight.
You're worried that in the process of eating a homemade meal with lean protein and veggies and a rich, delicious sauce you will consume more energy than you can use today.
You're worried that energy might be stored so that your body can use it when it needs to later.
You're worried that your relationship with gravity might change. You've been taught to worry about that. You've been taught to misconstrue manufacturered body issues as being "health conscious." But you're not doing things to promote health. You're just trying to reduce your energy consumption no matter what.
And I am begging you to consider, that this is not actually a "health conscious" mindset at all.

The Muppets 1.01 "Pig Girls Don't Cry"
I donât have a raccoon daughter because Iâm a raccoon biologist. I have a raccoon daughter because I moved to South Africa because I had what I thought was a âprophetic dreamâ (I had scurvy and also an evil psychiatrist prescribing me the wrong meds) where I was in South Africa and there was billboard with a woman on it in a lab coat holding a red fox and a raccoon that said âDr Foxy: This Could Be You!â And then in the dream I looked across the street and saw a billboard the said âCome Visit Hooters in South Africa.â And I woke up and was like âI know what I need to doâ which was not âgo to school to study native wildlifeâ but instead was âvisit Hooters in South Africa.â But I didnât want to go for just a little while because it was expensive and I didnât like the idea of the long flight, but I knew I HAD to go to the Hooters in South Africa. So I figured it would be more economical to just go and finish art school there. Except COVID happened and I literally got trapped there and the hooters in the city I moved to had apparently been closed for years and also I got a concussion and when I went to the doctor they said I had scurvy. So I had to do intensive eating treatment where I drank a lot of fruit juice and also learned to eat macaroni that was shapes other than SpongeBob. And after listening to my yapping about raccoons, my therapist, who had never met a raccoon, told me I should get a raccoon to help me keep fresh fruits in the house. And so when I got back to America I found someone trying to get rid of one Facebook because it was apparently evil and bit her toddler and then I did.
And now Iâm a raccoon biologist.
#thats exactly what id expect from anyone who's made it big post dashcon
I love how the phrasing of this politely obscures that raccoonmilf made Dashcon. Like a newcomer could come away thinking you mean "someone who made it big after Dashcon happened." But no.
one time on Zillow I saw a photo of a bedroom with a confederate flag tacked up covering the window, presumably because the current occupant couldnât afford curtains. no sheet. straight to confederate flag. I still think about that because the house was so shitty it probably needed to be condemned and it seemed like a teenage boy was living in that room. it was such a poignant ďżź microcosm of the Civil War revisionism and âsouthern prideâ culture in poor white people in the South. this family had nothing to their name but their racism and instead of taking that hardship out on their landleech, they hung their confederate flag over their bare window.
life might suck but at least i'll never be just a girl.
this site has one setting
Iâm laughing, but thereâs a super useful corollary, which my husband calls âthe Red Balloon.â He was a defense lawyer and had a fair number of drug addicts come through, and there is a thing where if youâre like, on your first offense, theyâll do a thing where you can go to treatment and if you complete it theyâll take the conviction off your record. And he would tell his clients, âLook, everyoneâs going to tell you not to do drugs. Theyâre going to say it over and over again. And itâs like, if people tell you not to think of a white elephant, youâre going to think of a white elephant. But the trick to not thinking about a white elephant is to think of a red balloon. So you need to find your red balloon. For some people itâs yoga. For others itâs woodworking. For some people itâs scrapbooking or gardening or any of a long list of things to do. They focus on that, itâs a lot easier to succeed in ignoring the white elephant.â So yeah, âwatch yourselfâ is one thing⌠but the better idea is to watch something else. (Even if itâs fanfic about werewolves fucking.)
Itâs a form of productive dissociation, and is super, super helpful. Itâs easy for me to get bogged down in how much pain Iâm in⌠but some of the most painful periods of my life have also been the most productive, writing-wise, because writing is one of my red balloons.Â
There is a phrase I use A LOT in my parenting and my son gets very sick of it, but itâs true:
The thing you practise is the thing you get good at.
You may not intentionally be practicing âbeing grumpyâ but if you donât put effort into practicing ânot being grumpyâ then Iâm afraid thatâs what youâre doing. Itâs hard! Itâs really hard! Sometimes, for some things, itâs pretty much impossible and that sucks!
But being carefully aware that you are going to get good at the things you do most of is a good way to be more careful of what those things are. If that makes sense.
You gotta appreciate sometimes how tumblr works in such a way that everyone who wants to reblog this interesting or useful psychological advice is also forced to reblog the thing about werewolf fucking
