“You know you’re just being used, right?”
James, who had been, for once in his life, minding his own damn business, started as a fifth year girl blocked his path to his dormitory. Next to him, he felt an invisible hand grab his elbow, and he prayed that the boy it belonged to would keep his temper in check. “Erm. Used how?” he asked politely, already knowing the answer.
“Regulus Black. The Slytherin you’re seeing? He’s only after you for your money and your reputation,” the girl’s companion said snidely, as if the whole thing was obvious.
“My…reputation?” James repeated, amused. The hand clutching his elbow tightened, and he swore he heard a soft, angry snort.
“You’re nice. He’s not,” the first girl rolled her eyes.
“That’s…” He trailed off. She wasn’t completely in the wrong, there. This time, the tug at his elbow was more like a pinch, and he couldn’t resist smirking. “You know he’s filthy rich, right? He doesn’t need me for my money. Plus, aren’t you kind of saying that I’m not very desirable, then? If all I’m good for is my money and my reputation? Seems like maybe you have the problem, not him.”
Both girls blinked, clearly stunned at their own implications.
“Doesn’t matter,” James chuckled. “Either way, I wouldn’t go around saying that. You’re right. He’s not as nice as me, and if he hears, he’s not going to be too happy.”
“I’m not afraid of some stupid Slytherin,” the second girl snarled. “Let him–”
But she was cut off, a Stinging Hex that seemed to come from nowhere making her yelp.
“What the fuck?” the first girl gasped.
James shrugged. “I warned you.”
And with that, he allowed Regulus, who was currently hiding under his Invisibility Cloak, to pull him off to his dorm.
