Still reeling from the realization that bullet journaling was essentially created to be a disability aid and got legit fuckin gentrified
Like I'm at work and don't have the time to properly organize my thoughts atm but like.
-bullet journalling was invented by a man with a learning disability (99% sure it was ADHD but his website now just says learning disability so I can't be 100%) as a system for organizing his life/way to work WITH his learning disability
-the general concept is bullet point the important things you need to do and use a simple system of symbols to mark whether it's done, rescheduled, cancelled, etc. with very little fanfare, keeping it all in one notebook so you know where to easily find the information at a glance
-people pick it up and it starts getting popular
-bullet journaling becomes an aesthetic movement largely populated by white neurotypicals
-bullet journaling has turned into creating an extremely pretty notebook that has some function, but largely depends on complicated decoration and aesthetic function that takes more time to set up than is tenable for the people it was created for
-new entries to bullet journaling feel pressure to shop at particular stores, use particular brands, purchase lots of stationery purely for its aesthetic value, and prioritize the artistry of the pages rather than the information being stored on them
-people who would massively benefit from the original system can only really find information on it from members of the aesthetic movement. There is now a barrier to entry for ppl with ADHD and other similar conditions, as bullet journaling now requires a focus and motivation to start that these same people often lack or struggle to maintain consistently
-bullet journaling is no longer a disability aid and has become an aesthetic movement largely for middle class white neurotypicals, pushing out the people who the system was created for to begin with
This is the original guide from the person who made bullet journalling. Super simple. Not at all high maintenance.
It was eye-opening to rewatch this after getting used to bullet journal meaning "work of highly decorative art you might journal in if it doesn't detract from the decoration" everywhere online.
This! I went on a bit of a youtube spiral last month, and it was only then I learned how bullet journals are really good for people with ADHD. Here are two videos that were posted 5 years ago by the youtube channel āHow to ADHDā:
This is a huge debate in the bujo community, yeah - the functionality vs aesthetic debate.
For myself, I really enjoy the aesthetic element. I like to think Iām artsy, I have a strong aesthetic leaning where I prefer things to look a certain way. But the reason I love bullet journalling so much is because itās so functional for me, which is where the ADHD (and autism) part really comes into play. Indexing means I can actually find stuff. The decorations change, but the core set-up stays the same, or is modified to fit any changing needs (for instance, now that Iāve finished uni, I no longer do weekly spreads).
Iām about to start my fifth year of bullet journalling. It works so well for me! I can track whatever I need, and I can be expressive. But aesthetic bujo is absolutely not for everyone, and I can completely understand why others have been turned away from it.
For those specifically looking for functional bujo stuff, try the subreddit r/bujo. Itās designed for the functional side, while r/bulletjournal can lean much more to the aesthetic side. On Youtube, my favourite bujoer has a bunch of good videos with advice - a specific one on aesthetic vs function, on why some people quit, and how to do a rolling weekly (the kind of weekly I used when I still used weeklies, and still the best and most functional, in my opinion).
In the end, bujo is an amazing and very easily personalised tool. Itās so, so easy to get bogged down and overwhelmed by the fancy artsy spreads, but at the end of the day, it needs to be about what works for you. For me, that includes doing art with it. For you, it might not be.
Many of the artistic bujo-ists also have ADHD. Doing art in your bujo can help get you motivated to use it. Or it can discourage you. We're all different.
The most important thing is to make your BuJo functional for YOU.
Mine I forget about periodically but it's covered in stickers and cute things meanwhile I don't have a future log or a monthly log or whatever because that's the part that overwhelmed me. I made it work FOR ME. And that's what's important.
It might also take trial and error and that's the beauty of it, you can change your system any time.
idk who needs to hear this, but your wants are not outrageous. you want love? you want attention? you want peace? you want comfort? you deserve it. you're not asking for too much.

posting these study pictures i've taken recently as inspiration for myself and for you since i haven't been feeling my most productive recently. to anyone else who is feeling similar, i hope that you remember it is okay to take a break. we get ill, we get tired, we get stressed, we get sad - and there's nothing wrong with that. please study well but look after yourself always, otherwise all that studying will do nothing but burn you out.
⢠09.12.2020 ⢠100/100 Days of Productivity
⨠Wow, I did it!! 100 Days of Productivity Challenge o.0 I don't know if I was productive through all of this period, but I certainly tried my best. The first semester is almost over, Christmas break starts in less than 2 weeks. I just have two more assignments to complete and all stress will go away (ar least for this few weeks before exams in January). āØ
