a sketch i did on a break form work that got way away from me: professor r. j. lupin in his office circa 1994 ;-;
My favorite bookstore ever.
Me: I’m not a fan of romance, really, unless it’s reeeally slowly built up and, like, the least important thing in the story, and even then, it’s iffy. Me when reading an LGBT book: ALL I WANT TO READ ABOUT IS THESE TWO CINNAMON BUNS, I DON’T CARE ABOUT PLOT OR OTHER CHARACTERS, I JUST WANT TO READ ABOUT THESE TWO LEADING A LONG, HAPPY LIFE TOGETHER AND SHARING ALL THE KISSES

A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon
Rate 4/5!
Genre: real life? is that a genre?
Goodreads summary: here
I am incredibly reluctant to call this book ‘light-hearted’, so please understand that when I say this, I mean ‘light-hearted’ prose, by ways of employing non-standard grammar and everyday language. Haddon chooses not to take his writing too seriously.
This allows for this intense psychological novel to address some very hard-hitting issues: depression, cancer, infidelity, homosexuality…and there’s more - like I said, it’s an intense read, topically.
Personally, I feel that Haddon handles these subjects in a delicate way, allowing the reader to get wrapped up in the mental whirlwind of the characters, and then occasionally pulling you out of the situation to find the humour in the narrative, before plunging you straight back into these heavy topics. You have to take it with a pinch of salt, but it works.
Although the isolated events seemed pretty predictable, the manner in which Haddon brings them about is somewhat unconventional, and I was always seeking to know more about the round-about lives of the characters!
I haven’t read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, perhaps Haddon’s most widely known book, but having read A Spot of Bother, I would definitely be up for it! It’s kind of John Green, minus the beauty, leaving you with a raw and very illuminating narrative.

There’s nothing more beautiful than seeing a well loved copy of someone’s favorite book. Seeing all the creases along the spine, little tears, dog-eared corners and yellowed pages fills up my heart with such warmth and joy.
I’m off to the states for the weekend so my posts may be sporadic, so enjoy this glorious #shelfie as my day gets away from me! . . I just hit book 2 in The Crow Girl and I’m loving it more and more the further into this intense story I get🙌🏻 . So complex 👌🏼.

Me if I ever open a bookstore: *taking books out of people's hands* I changed my mind, I'm keeping them all.
