The Promised Neverland (review)
Hello friends! The first review for the shounens listed in the last post is up! Lets talk about The Promised Neverland!
Title: The Promised Neverland
Summary: At Grace Field House, life couldn't be better for the orphans! Though they have no parents, together with the other kids and a kind "Mama" who cares for them, they form one big, happy family. No child is ever overlooked, especially since they are all adopted by the age of 12. Their daily lives involve rigorous tests, but afterwards, they are allowed to play outside.
There is only one rule they must obey: do not leave the orphanage. But one day, two top-scoring orphans, Emma and Norman, venture past the gate and unearth the horrifying reality behind their entire existence: they are all livestock, and their orphanage is a farm to cultivate food for a mysterious race of demons. With only a few months left to pull off an escape plan, the children must somehow change their predetermined fate.
3 Sentence Review: This story is one that is incredibly paced and thought through with a lot of attention to detail. The characters are likable and interesting but what really shines is the world that the author created. This is a series I would recommend if you like series like HunterxHunter or stories that like to mess with you head but not too seriously like Zankyou no Terror.
The Good: This series is fantastic, it draws you in from the very beginning! It make an unconventional choice to make a girl the main character (Emma) and it really works well! I jokingly say her super power is “shonen protag” because shes the person who never wants to lave anyone behind. In the case of a “trolley problem” she leaves the booth and saves both.It has actually really good art and there is a lot of content in the chapters which makes each chapter feel important. The world building is amazing and the puzzles built into the text is something unique that gives the story an interesting feel. I also like that the stakes feel real, these are children going against other worldly beings with a ton of power and the story manages to keep its characters feeling like adults.
The Bad: It has a lot of Deus ex Machina going on. Since this is a spoiler free review I’ll leave out the details but there is a lot of convenient plot contrivances. The art can go a little bit poor in some instances but for the most part its very good. Most most pressing problem I see is that the characters dont really develop. Emma’s personality does not change much from finding out that their raised as cattle to the most recent chapter. Changes in approaches to a problem is played off as character development.
If you like this try: HunterxHunter, The Hollow, Zankyou no Terror, Made in Abyss, Cowboy Bebop, Kekkai Sensen, Mushishi, Kiznaiver, and Totsukuni no Shoujo,
