I’m also glad that Fuu and Mugen didn’t get together in the show. They both need to grow up, Fuu definitely needs to be older. Idk why ppl feel the need to defend the age gap, nothing actually happened between them and it’s not like Mugen was grooming her. They don’t need to be to be together at those ages. Once Fuu is 20 they’d be on even ground development wise & it’s fine, he’s only 4 years older than her. Another controversy is them having a toxic relationship but I actually think Mugen simmers down from that. After Fuu saved his life against Sara, Mugens behavior towards her changed.
Still wasn’t where it needed to be by the end for a healthy partnership but that’s why I said they both need to grow up.
I also do like media having the balls to not explore romantic pairings they tease bc it reflects reality well. So often there’s a possibility of something, or more happening underneath the surface, that just never materializes the way we think or hope.
I like a fuugen romance that’s like 7 - 10 years down the road, when the trio has grown up and also integrated the lessons they just learned on that journey. I’m kinda thinking of writing a fanfic for it.
My head canon
I also like the idea that the trio go on 3 epic journeys in their lifetime together. The first being a journey of redemption, the 2nd being a journey of transformation and the 3rd being a journey of rebirth. During their redemption the 3 resolved the most significant burdens of their past, as teenagers; each trip focuses on a theme towards their development. Each trips goal is emotionally driven by one of the trio more than the rest.
For the 2nd journey, the transformation, they’re now settling into real adulthood & transitioning into a new way of life; in their mid-late 20s (Jin searches for Shino, Fuu searches for her bf & Mugen helps) Mugen growing tired of his lifestyle of aimlessly wandering, Jin inheriting another dojo from an old master he meets & earns the respect of but it’s not enough for him anymore, Fuu chasing some guy around that she’s feeling unsure of.. All feeling the changes from their journey demanding their attention. They also just miss each other and want another reason to be together again.
and lastly one final trip (Mugen returning to Ryukyu) in their 40s early 50s the latest. I think it’d be fun if the trio was Mugen, Jin & Fuugens daughter & they’re saving Fuu + Fuugens son who’s taken by Roza, his last and final tie to his Ryukyu days. I would loveee to see a ‘last of us’ vibe w Papa Mugen (and 2nd Papa Jin!) and Mama bear Fuu who’s finally developed some self defense skills. & so does Roza who’s become a ruthless survivor. Roza went crazy searching for the stash that was lost in her last encounter with Mugen and is also unhinged enough to believe he can find it and take her to it. Also wants him to be alone like he left her. Exploring the further decline of the lifestyle of their era and it coming to an end birthing something new, we see through the kids.
Trip 1 is Fuu’s trip, trip 2 is Jin’s trip (& Fuugen happens along the way) trip 3 is Mugens trip. Government still sending ppl after them
