what on earth is hillside? and other information below...
what is hillside? in short: beloved ocs with too much worldbuilding in long:the title of the passion project/novel i've been working on-and-off since 2020. it's gone under many iterations and the story has changed many, many, many times, but here's a summary of its current form:
After pushing the line with her parents and the law too many times, ex-delinquent and fresh adult Hildegard "Hilde" finds herself facing an ultimatum: leave home and pay off her newly acquired legal fines with no support, or get sent away from everything she knows to live with and work for her estranged aunt in her mother's hometown as a last-ditch attempt to make her grow up. She chooses the latter and ends up in Blossom Hills, a small farming town balanced on the borders of Tennessee and North Carolina. Finding herself surrounded by unfamiliar faces, like the local mortician's daughter or the paranoid homesteader building a home in the land between theirs, it isn't too long before Hilde begins to find a home in her new environment. Despite the initial pleasantries, though, there's something deeply wrong with this town where buttercups bloom year-round, and Hilde can't quite shake the feeling that she's the only one aware of this. After discovering the dilapidated ruins of an old home hidden deep within the appalachian woods and the unusual disappearance of her caretaker three decades prior, it isn't long before a grim truth begins to unravel: everything and everyone in town is connected, and as the sole outsider, she's standing in the heart of its web. The heart of Blossom Hills is alive, and it's been waiting for her for a very long time.
