I owe you
Summary: Y/N is a therapist struggling to make ends meet. One day, the handsome jock who protected her from high school bullies in exchange for doing his homework calls and offers her a life-changing amount of money. But Y/N doesnât know how to accept help. And Harry canât stop giving it. (therapist!reader x retired hockey player!harry)
Word count: 19.6k
Warnings: bullying; mentions of trauma, abuse, other topics related Y/Nâs job as a therapist; financial struggles; angst; smut (dom!harry, rough sex, light choking, teasing, spanking, degradation); protective!harry; sugar daddy!harry (kind of⊠no age gap)
A/N: This was loosely inspired by a Reddit post about a woman who was contacted by the guy that protected her from high school bullies. It started off as a cute lil fic, but I became deeply invested in these characters and here we are at 19k words... I hope youâll love them too <3
MASTERLIST
***
The space heater shuts off with a rattling sound. Y/N gets up to unplug the ancient thing and plug it back in for the third time that day. It whirs back to life. Only a temporary fix, of course. She bought it last fall at a sketchy garage sale.
She pulls her sweater tighter around her body. Her clients have been keeping their coats on during sessions for the past couple weeks as the weather has gotten cooler.
The clinic phone rings. She picks up.
âHi, youâve reached the Trauma & Wellness Centre.â
âHi, Y/N. Itâs Agatha. Iâm calling to let you know I canât make it for tomorrowâs session. I know Iâm calling within the twenty-four-hour window, but itâs a family emergency. Do I still have to pay the late cancellation fee?â
Y/N could make her pay the late fee and probably should, considering how tight finances have been.
âNo, Agatha. Thatâs okay. Thank you for calling and letting me know.â
After hanging up, she looks up at the ceiling and groans loudly. Thatâs the second client who has cancelled this week. Both of them are some of her only clients paying the full fee for her sessions because she offers a sliding scale, which most people end up using.
The phone starts ringing again. She squeezes her eyes shut, bracing herself for another cancellation.
âTrauma & Wellness Centre,â she says, hoping she doesnât sound as miserable as she feels.
âHi, Y/N,â is all the caller says. A deep male voice. Most of her clients are women of various ages, though she has seen some men in the past. This doesnât sound like any of them though.
She waits for him to say something else, but he doesnât. âWho is this?â
âHarry. From high school.â
She doesnât speak.
âThe guy you did homework for? The one whoââ
âI remember you.â Of course she remembers him. How could she not? âHow did you get this number?â
âFrom your website?â
âOh. Right.â If someone wanted to find her, it would be pretty easy to search up her name, click on her clinic website, and get her contact information from there.
âHowâs life?â he asks.
This is so weird.
âUm, good,â she answers, while her mind works in the background to make sense of this odd situation. âSorry, why are you calling?â
He clears his throat. âIâve been thinking about everything that went down in high school. The way people treated you. The way I treated you...â He pauses, takes a breath. âI donât like who I was back then.â
She narrows her eyes, confused. âYou defended me,â she says slowly, wondering if sheâs the one misremembering things.
âI exploited you. Made you do my homework and cheated off you in exams in return for defending you. I wanted to apologize and pay you back for all the work you did.â
âYou want to pay me back for doing your homework in high school?â
âMhm. So, what do you need? A house? A car?â
She laughs. âYou cannot be serious right now. This is⊠This is a joke, right?â
He must be pulling some sort of prank on her. Is he in cahoots with others from high school? Did they plan this?
âIâm serious, Y/N.â
âYouâre willing to spend thousands of dollars on me because⊠What? You feel guilty about something that happened fifteen years ago?â She wonders if he also hears how absurd that sounds.
âLook, I⊠Iâve done quite well for myself since then. Letâs just say I have a lot more money than I need. Iâm not making empty promises here.â
He sounds sincere. But she still canât wrap her mind around any of it.
âThis is ridiculous. I havenât even seen you since high school, Harry.â
âWould you be more open to it if we met in person?â
âMaybe? No.â She covers her eyes with her hand and sighs. âI donât know.â
âLetâs meet.â
She has to admit sheâs curious about him. Back in high school, he was this tall, handsome jock. The girls wouldâve been all over him if he wasnât so intimidating. But it was that intimidating demeanor that successfully kept the bullies away from her.
He wasnât mean though. Even when telling her bullies to back off, he didnât do it in a way that personally attacked their character. He was just serious, straightforward, and had enough muscle on him to scare off the guys who had been especially cruel to Y/N.
She wonders what heâs like today. So, she agrees to meet him, and they exchange numbers.
As she locks up the clinic for the night, the conversation is replaying in her head. Why now? Why would he reach out to her now? After all these years?
She gets into her carâan old, beatup Honda Civic, which is also hanging on by a loose thread. The check engine light comes on as she turns the key in the ignition. She desperately needs a visit to the mechanic.
Harryâs offer is already starting to look tempting.
***
Y/N doesnât know what to wear to this meeting. Should she dress like someone that has her shit together and doesnât need his pity money? Or should she dress like someone whose life is falling apart and could clearly use some help? Ultimately, she decides to stay in her work clothesâa simple blouse and dress pants.
She drives to the address he sent her. As she pulls up to the house, she notices the size of it. The huge winding driveway leading to a three-car garage, the perfectly manicured lawn, the pristine porch with a bench and flowerpots.
She rings the doorbell and waits. Harry appears a moment later, dressed comfortably in a hoodie and sweatpants, and yes, just as handsome as she remembers, but now in a more mature, rugged way with stubble and crinkles by his eyes when he smiles. His curls are styled much better than they were in high school, when he didnât seem to know quite what to do with them.
âCome in.â
She steps into the spacious foyer. It smells like a fall scented candle in here, notes of cinnamon and vanilla in the air.
âIâm surprised you invited me to your house.â
He takes her coat without asking and hangs it up in the closet. âI wanted you to see Iâm not lying about the money.â
âWhat do you do for a living?â She looks up at the tall ceiling, sun pouring in through the skylight.
âI play hockey. Or I used to. I retired last year.â He shoves his hands in his pockets.
âOh. I had no idea. Then again, I know nothing about that world.â
âIt pays a stupid amount. As you can see.â
âItâs just you living here?â
He nods. She wonders if it ever gets lonely.
As he leads her to the living room, he offers her something to drink. She politely declines. They sit on separate couches, facing each other.
âYou look different,â he says, studying her for a moment.
âSo do you.â
They stare at each other. He looks away first, a faint smirk on his lips that she wouldâve missed if she wasnât looking so closely.
âYouâre a therapist now,â he states.
âYeah. I unfuck peopleâs brains, as my best friend Cindy says.â
âSome people in high school couldâve used that.â
âI didnât have the skills back then, unfortunately.â
He laughs. She holds back a grin.
âSo, the offer...â she begins, rerouting her attention from his cute dimples to the point of their meeting.
He nods, encouraging her to continue.
âWhy? I mean, why now?â
He leans back on the couch, laying one arm over the back of it, his pensive gaze settling on the glass table between them. âSince retiring, Iâve had a lot of time to think. And the one thing I canât get off my mind is...â His green eyes lift to find hers. âYou.â
She swallows. Her throat feels dry. Maybe she shouldâve accepted that drink.
âLike I said on the phone, I donât like the way I exploited you when you were vulnerable.â He pauses, jaw tightening. âI told myself at the time that it was a fair trade. Protection for homework. But thatâs not what it was. You were scared and alone, and I saw an opportunity. I donât regret defending you. I just regret trying to get something out of it.â He runs a hand through his hair. âIâd like to think Iâm not that person anymoreâŠâ
She didnât truly believe he felt guilty until now, seeing and hearing him explain it to her in person. The way he struggles to meet her eyes but still wills himself to. The way he fidgets with the strings on his hoodie. Heâs clearly been rehearsing what to say and how to say it.
âHarry,â she starts gently, âI appreciate you reaching out to apologize after all these years. But I really donât needâor wantâyour pity.â
He shakes his head. âThatâs not what this is. Y/N, I wouldnât have all thisââhe gestures vaguely to their surroundingsââif it wasnât for you. I owe you.â
She laughs. âYouâre giving me too much credit.â
âYouâre the reason I was able to party my way through high school and still get into a good university.â
That part may be true, but she still doesnât believe she was the reason he made it this far. She decides to concede on that point.
âI just think that money could be used for much better things,â she argues. âYou could donate to a charityââ
âI already donate to charities.â
âOkay, well, maybe I could give you a list of charities that are close to my heart andââ
âThatâs not enough. I want to help you directly.â His gaze is intense now, piercing into her with determination. âConsider it a donation to your clinic.â
She pauses. Itâs technically the same thing. Him sending her money versus âdonatingâ it to the clinic. And yet, this framing makes it sound different. Better. Noble.
She thinks of the dying space heater. The clients who keep cancelling. The old work computer that takes fucking ages to turn on. The things she could do with that money are⊠Well, endless.
âYouâre actually making a difference,â he says more softly this time. âI just played a game. You deserve this money more than I do.â
She wants to keep arguing, but thereâs no point. He has his mind made up, and she can be quite stubborn herself. Theyâll keep talking in circles.
âCan I think about it?â she asks.
âSure. The offer doesnât expire.â
***
âSo, let me get this straight,â says Cindy, swirling around her iced matcha.
Y/N needed to consult someone about this whole situation, and Cindy would tell it to her straight. So, she invited her to brunch that Saturday.
âYou have a hot, rich former hockey player offering you a shitload of money for nothing in returnâŠâ Cindy taps a finger against her chin. âIâm not sure Iâm seeing the issue.â
Y/N quirks a brow. âI never said he was hot.â
Her friend rolls her eyes. âBitch, I googled him. Those shots of him on the ice are sexy.â
Y/N hadnât even thought of googling him. Sheâs been too busy with work. Maybe she should do her research too.
âFine. Heâs hot. But thatâs not the point.â
âRight. The money is the point.â Cindy leans forward on the table, punctuating her next few words, âThe money that you very clearly need! When someoneâs throwing you a life raft, Y/N, you take it.â
âWouldnât you feel weird accepting money from some guy from high school?â
âMaybe at first⊠But then Iâd take a look at my bank account, and it wouldnât feel weird anymore.â Cindy shrugs and takes a bite of her sandwich.
Y/N sighs. Her friend does have a point. Most people in her position wouldnât hesitate to accept an offer like this. In fact, they would jump at the chance for free money before even vetting that it was legit. Is she being stupid for not accepting it?
âLook, youâre struggling,â Cindy says, more gently now. âMark royally fucked you over and left you with heaps of debt. You keep giving discounted sessions to clients even though you canât afford it because youâre a good fucking person.â She reaches for Y/Nâs hand on the table and gives it an earnest squeeze. âYou, of all people, deserve this money.â
Y/N looks down at their hands, feeling the weight of Cindyâs words settle in her chest. Her closest friend who has known her for nearly a decade.
âThatâs what this is really about, right?â asks Cindy. âYou think you donât deserve it.â
That thought has been nagging at her ever since the initial phone call with Harry. She has always been someone who earns her success, who fights for every scrap. Hardship is familiar, perhaps even comfortable. But that also means she doesnât know when to ask for help or even how to accept help when itâs offered to her on a silver platter like this.
She is struggling. Mark, her idiot of an ex-husband and former business partner, mismanaged their clinicâs finances. When he lost his license for misconduct, he disappeared, leaving Y/N to pay off the debts he incurred. Sheâs not blameless; she was stupidly in love and blindly trusted him.
She canât bring herself to ask Harry to pay off her debt. She just canât. Not yet. But maybe she can use his help in other ways.
That night, she calls him.
âHey. SoâŠâ She takes a deep breath. âI guess I could use help with a couple things at the clinic.â
She expects some smug response about her finally giving in, but all he says is, âOkay. Name them.â
âThe chairs in the waiting room need to be replaced.â
âDone.â
âAnd my work computer. Itâs from 2018. I could use a new one.â
âDone.â
âThatâs all.â
âAre you sure?â
âMhm.â
A few moments of silence pass by, as if heâs waiting for her to change her mind and add more to the list, but she doesnât.
âAlright,â he says. âWell, if you think of anything elseââ
âIâll let you know. Thanks. I appreciate it.â
âNo need to thank me.â
***
The new computer arrives that following week. The chairs are delivered the next day.
Y/N is in her office, catching up on notetaking for her sessions that day, when she hears footsteps out in the waiting room. Itâs nearly five oâclock. She has no more appointments that day, so sheâs not sure who to expect when she walks out of her office.
She certainly wasnât expecting Harry. Dressed in a blue long-sleeve shirt and black athletic shorts, sunglasses perched on his head. He waves.
âHey, what are you doing here?â she asks.
âJust came to see if the chairs arrived.â
âYeah, they got here an hour ago. I still need to get rid of the old ones.â She eyes the worn-out chairs with holes in the fabric. The new ones are stacked in a corner.
âI can do that.â
She raises her brows. âOh, you donât have to. I was going to take care of it after finishing my work.â
âNo, no. Iâve got this. You go do your thing.â He starts moving towards the old chairs before she can protest.
She returns to her office and sits down at her desk. Harry can be seen through the blinds, carrying the chairs out to the dumpster. She tries to focus on her notes, but her attention shifts to the window each time he walks by. She watches him pause at one point, placing the chairs down, his hand rubbing his hip. Even through his shirt, she can see his muscles flexing as he picks them back up.
After some time, he stops appearing outside her window. She hears movement out in the waiting roomâthe sound of him rearranging the new chairs.
Then heâs in her doorway. She meets his gaze, smiles. He saunters in, observing his surroundings. The art on the walls. The plants on the windowsill. The couch set up on one side of the room facing an armchair, a coffee table in the middle. Her desk sits on the far side of the room.
âNice office,â he comments.
âThanks.â
âHowâs the new computer?â
She glances at it. âFantastic. Hasnât crashed on me once. But Iâm still hitting save every other minute because I have trust issues.â
He chuckles.
âBit chilly in here, no?â he asks, shoving his hands into his pockets.
âThatâs because I turned off the space heater.â She pats the old thing on the floor by her desk.
He frowns. âNo central heating in this place?â
âThere is. Or used to be. Itâs wonky.â
He gives her a look that tells her exactly what heâs about to say.
âWe can get that fixed, you know.â
She hesitates. âYouâve already done a lot.â
âA computer and chairs is not a lot.â
For him, itâs hardly a drop in the bucket. She bites her lip, considering it. Itâs definitely harder to say no with him standing right there, looking at her with his intense green eyes.
âOkay, it would be nice to not freeze my ass off every time Iâm in here,â she admits.
âDone,â he says. Like heâs her fucking fairy godmother. Or her own personal genie in a bottle. A cute genie. With dimples and broad shoulders and incredibly toned thighsâwow, how had she not noticed the thighs?
She realizes sheâs staring and yanks her gaze back up to his face.
âI should get back to my notes,â she says.
âRight. Iâll leave you to it. Bye, Y/N.â He backs out of her office.
âBye, Harry.â
As soon as she hears the front door close, she turns to her computer and googles his name, clicking on Images first. Cindy was right. Harry in hockey gear is mesmerizing. On the ice, he looks stern, focused, and intimidating. Photos of him off the iceâin press interviews and photoshootsâshow a different side. Warm, friendly, and kind. In all of them, he looks undeniably attractive.
After scrolling through images for God knows how long, she returns to the All tab. She clicks on his Wikipedia page, scanning his accolades. A list of championships, MVP awards, stats that mean nothing to her. Then she reaches the section on his retirement. Recurring injuries. Surgeryâ She closes the tab. It feels too personal.
The link below his Wikipedia and Instagram is for The Styles Foundationâa charity founded by Harry that focuses on youth mental health initiatives and, more recently, covering the cost of therapy for retired athletes who canât afford it.
Reading about his charity, Y/N feels a different kind of connection to him that she never did before. Connected not only by their past but also a causeâthe desire to make mental health care more accessible.
Next, she looks up videos of Harry playing hockey. Watching him masterfully weave his way through his opponents on the ice makes something stir in her lower abdomen. After spending fifteen minutes watching his top ten career highlights and slow motion fan edits of his best goals, she snaps out of her trance and abruptly closes the window.
***
A few days later, Y/N parks outside her clinic, mentally gearing up for the day ahead. If she remembers correctly from her calendar, she has a day full of back-to-back sessions. As she exits her car, she notices a woman standing outside the clinic entrance, watching her. Sheâs in her forties, maybe, with a neat bob and a blazer. Not one of her clients.
âAre you Y/N Y/L/N?â asks the woman as she approaches.
âYes.â
âYouâre my daughterâs therapist.â
âWhoâs your dauââ
âHow dare you?â
The vitriol in her voice takes Y/N by surprise.
âHow dare you report me to child protective services? I have never hurt my daughter or any of my children. I would never do such a thing!â
Now she understands. This is Kaylaâs mother. Nineteen-year-old Kayla began seeing Y/N six months ago. Last month, she opened up about being physically and verbally abused by her mother growing up. Although Kayla is an adult now, she has younger siblings still living with their mother, which meant Y/N had to report the abuse.
âWhat has Kayla told you?â asks the woman.
âMaâam,â Y/N begins slowly and calmly, âI canât disclose that. I understand youâre upsetââ
âYou are tearing our family apart, do you understand?â The woman steps closer, her voice rising with each second. Y/N takes a subtle step back. âDo you have any idea what this is going to do to us? Are you even a real therapist? I heard about what goes on at this clinic. I should be the one reporting you!â She points an accusatory finger at her. âMy daughter is never coming back here.â
Y/Nâs jaw tightens. âYour daughter is an adult. She can decide for herself.â
âNot when Iâm the one paying for her sessions.â
Y/Nâs heart sinks. Kayla never mentioned that her sessions were being funded by her mom. Not that that wouldâve changed anything. Y/N wouldâve had to report the abuse regardless. But it still stings to know that this may prevent Kayla from accessing therapy again.
The woman finally turns on her heel and storms off to her car, slamming the door shut and speeding off.
Y/N unlocks the clinic with trembling hands and steps inside. Tears well in her eyes as she walks to her office. Itâs not the first time something like this has happened in her career, but it never gets easier. She collapses at her desk and takes a few deep breaths to calm her racing heart.
The sound of the front door opening sends her heart into a tailspin again.
âY/N?â Harryâs voice carries down the hallway.
She quickly wipes the tears off her face and walks out to the waiting room.
âMorning,â he says. âI was justâ Whatâs wrong?â His brows furrow in concern, eyes scanning her face.
âNothing.â She shakes her head. âJust a client.â
âYou already had a client? I thought you just opened.â
âNo, umâŠâ She pauses, carefully considering her words. âIt was a clientâs mother. She was waiting for me when I got here and yelled at me for reporting her for child abuse.â
âShit. Thatâs awful. Iâm sorry.â
She shrugs, but her eyes fill with tears again.
Harry appears to move towards her instinctively, then stops himself. âDo you want to talk about it?â
She shakes her head.
He studies her for a moment. âHow can I help? Let me take something off your plate today.â
His offer lifts some of the weight in her chest.
âReally? Donât you have, like, stuff to do?â
He shrugs. âNothing important.â
âI have back-to-back sessions today, but Iâve been wanting to organize the back room. Thereâs a ton of boxes with documents that need to be shredded.â
âIâm a great shredder.â
She laughs. That weight lifts a bit more.

When Harry first reached out to Y/N, he wasnât expecting it to turn into⊠this. He was prepared to drop a large sum of money directly into her bank account and call it a day. He didnât think sheâd be so reluctant to accept the offer.
It didnât seem like pride. She just seemed skeptical at first and then like someone who isnât used to having things handed to her, which Harry could respect. Still, he was determined to help her, and when he met her in person, that impulse only grew stronger. She was so⊠genuine. And tenacious. And inspiring.
After everything she went through in high school, she couldâve turned into a bitter shell of a human being who takes her grievances out on everyone else, and she would be totally justified in doing so. But instead, she turned into someone that spends her days helping people heal from trauma and other mental struggles. How could anyone not be inspired by that?
When he found her crying after getting yelled at by a clientâs mother, it reminded him of the last time he saw her cry, which was in high school. She was hiding under a cold, dark stairwell by herself, sobbing quietly into her knees.
âAre you, um⊠Are you okay?â he asked when he found her there.
The sobbing abruptly stopped. She stared up at him wide-eyed, a deer caught in headlights. âYâyeah.â
âYou canât let them see you cry, you know,â he told her. âItâll just make things worse.â
âI know.â She sniffled. âThatâs why Iâm here.â
That was the day they made the deal. She was vulnerable and desperate. Harry thinks she would have agreed to just about anything. And he used that to his advantage. Maybe if it had been someone else in his place, they wouldâve gone even further, made even bigger requests, but he couldnât use that to excuse his own behaviour.
Now heâs trying to make things right. Heâs not sure if he believes in karma, but he does believe in taking accountability.
He spent that whole day at the clinic, shredding papers in the back room while Y/N saw clients. He put his headphones in and listened to music to entertain himself. It felt oddly relaxing. And it was nice to see Y/N popping her pretty head in every now and then to check on him.
He kept returning that week to help out, even bringing her coffee some days. She eventually asked him to sign a volunteer contract, explaining the confidentiality rules to him, and to get a background check.
âNot because I think youâre a criminal,â she reassured him. âItâs just protocol.â
He understood. If anything, he found it admirable that she wanted to do things the right way.
He enjoyed being in the clinic. Even if he was only doing menial tasks, like shredding papers, cleaning, and organizing. It felt⊠meaningful.
âI noticed you donât have a receptionist,â he said to her one day. âIs there a reason for that?â
âWe used to have one. She was pretty flaky. Then she just became another expense to stress over, so I had to let her go.â
âWe?â
âHuh?â
âYou said âweâ used to have one.â
âOh. Did I? Whoops.â She gave a sheepish laugh and walked back to her office.
Except Harry had noticed the other office. The one that remains unused with nothing but a desk and two chairs inside it. It looks like it once belonged to another therapist. But he doesnât want to pry, so he keeps his questions to himself.
Itâs Friday now and heâs in the back room again, shredding documents, headphones in, humming along to Joni Mitchell. He pauses for a moment to lean back in his chair and stretch. Thatâs when he notices her standing in the doorway, a small grin on her face as she watches him.
âOh, hey.â He removes his headphones.
âI just wanted to let you know I have to close the clinic early because I have plans tonight.â
âWow. And here I thought you were a workaholic.â
She gives him a wry smile. âI am on most days. But I canât miss this. My best friend Cindy got a promotion, so a few of us are going out to celebrate.â
Good, he thinks to himself. This past week, he has seen her work ten-hour days, which apparently is the norm for her. She deserves a night out.
âActually, would youâŠâ She hesitates, biting her lip. âWould you want to come?â
He doesnât even have to think about it. âSure. Your friend wonât mind?â
âNo, I think sheâll be happy to finally meet you.â
âYou told her about me?â
Her eyes widen briefly. âOnly in passing. Sheâs nosy.â
He chuckles. âAlright, Iâm in.â
He offers to drive them to the bar. Her friends are already there when they arrive, sitting at a table in the back. She introduces all of them. Cindy, Poppy, Sara, and Jamal. Harry tries to commit their names to memory.
Cindy is a short brunette with a sharp wit. Y/N was right. She seems thrilled to meet Harry, exchanging sly glances with Y/N in the way that women do sometimes when they seem to be telepathically communicating.
Her other friends seem alright, though a couple of them make comments at Y/N that could pass as innocent on the surface but seem to have snarky undertones. Maybe heâs reading into things too much or doesnât understand their dynamic quite yet. That can happen when youâre the outsider in a friend group.
Itâs fascinating to see Y/N in a different setting, in non-therapist mode. Sheâs dressed in a fitted white t-shirt with a short black skirt and boots. Her hair is down, her shoulders relaxed. Her hands nurse a margarita. She laughs freely and often, and when Harry realizes itâs the sweetest sound heâs heard in a while, he knows heâs in trouble.
âHarry, how do you and Y/N know each other?â asks Poppy.
âWe went to the same high school.â
âOh! High school sweethearts!â
âWe never dated,â Y/N quickly corrects.
Poppy gapes at her. âWhat?! Let me guess. You were too busy paying attention in class and being a good student,â she says in a patronizing tone. âBoring!â
Harry quirks a brow and glances at Y/N, who just quietly sips her margarita.
âWhat was Y/N like in high school?â asks Sara.
Now she shifts uncomfortably in her seat, brushing her fingers through her hair, avoiding his gaze, like sheâs afraid to hear what he has to say.
âShe was smart. Really smart. She was kind, even to people who didnât deserve it.â
He keeps things vague. It seems like most of her friends donât know what she endured in high school.
âWow. You make her sound like a saint.â Poppy laughs. âShe canât be that perfect. Câmon, give us some embarrassing stories.â
âPoppy, shut up,â Cindy cuts in, then turns to Harry. âWas Y/N always this hot?â
Y/N nearly chokes on her drink, coughing into her elbow.
Harry smirks. âI thought she was pretty, yeah.â
Pretty felt too simple. He remembers watching her during an exam. He told himself it was just part of their dealâcheating off her meant frequently looking over at her. But then he started getting lost in the details. Like the way her brow would furrow when she reached a difficult question, puckering her soft lips, tapping her pencil against her temple as if the answer was just stuck somewhere in her brain and the pencil would knock it loose. Yeah, pretty was just skimming the surface.
Y/N seems taken aback by his admission. Cindy grins, pleased by his answer.
âHarry, my brother is a huge hockey fan,â says Poppy, tucking her hair behind her ear.
âOh yeah?â
âYou were actually his favourite player until you retired. He would kill me if I donât at least get a selfie.â
âPoppy,â Y/N says sternly.
âWhat?â
âItâs fine,â says Harry. âI donât mind.â
Y/N still gives him an apologetic look.
Later that night, he leaves to use the restroom. When he returns, the live band has started their set and most of their group has moved to the dance floor, leaving their drinks behind at the table. Y/N is still there with her friend Jamal, patiently listening to him rant about his toxic ex-boyfriend who keeps calling to fuck with his head.
âJ, you really need to block him,â she shouts over the music.
âYou know I canât do that!â
She sighs, like theyâve had this conversation fifteen times. Eventually, Jamal tires of ranting and saunters off to the dance floor. Y/N watches her friends dancing with a small, wistful smile on her face, one hand fiddling with her dangly gold earrings.
Harry leans closer and says in her ear, âYou should go dance.â
âI promised to guard everyoneâs stuff,â she replies, gesturing to the unfinished drinks, purses, and other belongings messily strewn across the table.
Harry doesnât like that sweet Y/N had been relegated to guard duty. âI can guard it.â
She hesitates. âAre you sure?â
âYes. Go dance.â
She gives him a grateful grin and then sheâs off. He watches as she joins her friends on the floor, throwing her hands up in the air and grooving along to the music. Cindy starts grinding on her theatrically, and she returns the favour by giving her friendâs butt a few playful spanks. Harry laughs, thoroughly entertained by their antics.
By the end of the night, Y/N is happily drunk and high on life. So much so that she nearly crosses a busy street without looking on the way back to Harryâs car, but he grabs her by the waist just in time. When they reach his car, he opens the door for her before getting in himself.
âDid you have fun tonight?â she asks as he pulls out of the lot.
âYeah, I did.â
âDid you really? I hope you donât feel like I just brought you along to take selfies with my friends and guard our stuff while we danced. I swear that wasnât the plan. I didnât even know Poppy has a brother who likes hockey? She might have made that up, now that I think about it.â She frowns thoughtfully, her lips set in an adorable pout.
âI didnât feel that way at all, lovie.â The pet name slips out before he can stop it, and he feels his ears go warm. But she hardly seems to notice. âAnd Poppy is, um⊠an interesting character.â Thatâs the most polite descriptor he could think of.
Y/N gets an odd expression on her face when he says that. âWhat do you mean?â
âNothing.â He decides that having this conversation while sheâs drunk is probably not the best idea and drops it.
She falls asleep at some point, and Harry subconsciously drives smoother to avoid waking her up. He glances at her periodically, the image of her sleeping face under the glow of passing streetlights too beautiful to resist.
She stirs awake on her own when they reach her apartment.
âThanks for the ride, Harr bear,â she says. âYouâre the best.â
He chuckles. âYouâre welcome.â
He waits until sheâs inside the building before driving away.
***
Y/N sleeps in the next day. Well, her definition of âsleeping in,â which involves getting up at eight instead of six.
She eats breakfast and gets ready to go to the clinic. She keeps her Saturday afternoons open for clients who canât meet during the week. Itâs half past noon when she leaves her apartment and gets in her car. Except when she turns her key in the ignition⊠The car doesnât start. She tries again. And again. Nothing. Not even a click.
Fuck. Thatâs what she gets for ignoring the check engine light for so long.
She has a session at one oâclock. She could take the bus, but it would take her an hour to get there. She would call Cindy, but sheâs out of town for the weekend. She calls Jamal. No answer. She calls Sara. Voicemail. She doesnât even bother with Poppy. Sighing, she realizes sheâs left with one choice. Harry. She feels bad asking him for yet another favour. Not that she necessarily asked for the other ones. But still.
The clock is ticking. She doesnât have time to deliberate. She calls Harry and explains her situation. Not surprisingly, he agrees to give her a ride.
âIâm really sorry about this,â she says as she gets into his car a few minutes later. âNo one else was available.â
âNo, no, Iâm glad you called,â he says with a smile.
âReally? I thought youâd be sick of me after we basically spent all of yesterday together.â
âPlease. I could never be sick of you.â He says it like itâs a given, like thereâs nothing heâd rather do than spend time with her.
When they reach the clinic, he asks what time she gets off work that day.
âAt six,â she answers. âBut I can take the bus home, itâs fine.â
He gives her a disapproving look. âYouâre not taking the bus. Text me when youâre done, okay?â
âOkay.â
Sheâs smiling as she walks into the clinic, her dead car forgotten and filed away in the back of her mind. Her good mood doesnât last very long though. Her sessions are tough that day. One client recently got back together with her abusive ex-boyfriend, seemingly undoing all the work theyâve done in therapy. Another client lost a loved one to a long battle with cancer. And finally, her last client lays into her for not immediately fixing all her problems, even though theyâve only had three sessions so far and she has refused to do any of the homework Y/N assigns.
By the end of the day, she is utterly exhausted.
While she waits for Harry, she decides to check her banking app. Another loan payment was automatically withdrawn today. Her balance is hovering close to zero yet again. Sheâs been paying off this loan for three years. Three years, and it feels like sheâs barely made a dent. She groans, feeling twice as drained as before.
Harry must see it on her face when he pulls up in his car because he says, âRough day?â
âYeah,â she sighs, settling into the passenger seat. Then she pauses, pokes her nose in the air like a dog and sniffs. âWere you eating in here?â
He turns to look in the backseat. She follows his gaze to find multiple takeout bags sitting there.
âI got Thai food,â he says. âI was going to invite you over for dinner, but if youâre too tired, Iââ
âI love Thai!â She looks at him with wide-eyed excitement.
âI know. You bring it for lunch all the time.â
Y/N could cry. She could actually physically burst into tears right now. He noticed what she was bringing for lunch? And went out of his way to get it for her and was planning to invite her over for dinner?
âIâd love to join you for dinner,â she says instead of crying.
***
Y/N has never felt more comfortable, snuggled under a fluffy blanket on Harryâs big couch, legs curled under her, belly full of Thai food. Harry goes to the kitchen to put away their dishes and trash. When he returns to find her wrapped up like a burrito on the couch, he seems quite pleased, as though his mission has been accomplished.
âI have a confession,â she says as he sits down next to her.
âIâm listening.â
âI googled you.â
He lets out a laugh. âTo be fair, I googled you first. Thatâs how I got your clinic number.â
âOh. Yeah.â She frowns, realizing itâs not as wild of a confession as she initially thought. âBut I mean, I watched you play. Youâre really good on the ice. Like, scary good. Do you ever miss it?â
He thinks for a moment. âSometimes⊠Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, and I think I have a game the next day. And then I remember Iâm retired. And thereâs this mix of relief andâŠâ
âGrief?â
He meets her eyes. âYeah. Not just missing the game, but, like, the structure that came with it? The schedules, the teammates, the expectations. It was all so predictable. And then suddenly, I was just⊠a guy with a lot of money and no idea what to do with himself.â
âHow did you deal with that?â
âWell, at first, with a lot of alcohol.â He laughs sheepishly. âThat wasnât quite working, so I started talking to people. Other retired athletes. That helped. And I started putting my time and money into things that matter to me.â
âIs that how your foundation came about?â
He raises his brows. âYou really did your research.â
She shrugs, a small proud smile tugging at her lips.
âI actually started the foundation while I was still playing. I lost a teammate to suicide, and I wanted to contribute to mental health initiatives, so thatâs how it started. Then after I retired and struggled with that transition, I wanted to help other retired athletes.â
She watches him closely as he speaks, the way he gestures with his hands, the grief in his eyes when he mentions his teammate, the determination when he explains wanting to help others like himself. The warm feeling in her chest expands and spreads through the rest of her body.
âYouâre a really good guy, Harry.â
He smiles, then looks away briefly, like heâs contemplating his next words. He opens his mouth, then closes it.
âWhat?â
âI have a confession too,â he finally says.
Her stomach flips.
âIn our last year of high school⊠I was going to ask you out.â
She blinks at him, hardly processing the words at first. âYou were?â
He nods.
Itâs suddenly too hot under her blanket, so she pulls it halfway down her body. âWhy didnât you?â
He thinks about it.
âWere you scared of what people would think? Itâs okay if you were,â she says softly, though her heart sinks at the thought.
âNo, I was scared of what you would think. I thought you were too smart to go out with a dumb jock like me.â
She frowns. âThatâs not true.â
He tilts his head. âNo?â
âNo.â
They gaze at each other for a long moment. She realizes how close they are on this couch and how warm her face is and how heâs directly staring at her lips now. He shifts closer and closer. Her breath catches in her throat.
And then he kisses her. A soft, lingering kiss at first. Then another. And another. Itâs only once she has fully melted into goo that he properly kisses her, hands cupping her face and angling it towards him so he can slip his tongue in easily. He tastes like the guava candy they found at the bottom of their takeout bagsâsweet and tangy.
She brings her hand to his chest, gripping the front of his shirt in her fist. Sheâs breathless when he pulls away. He huffs a quiet laugh, shaking his head like heâs in disbelief.
âWhat?â she asks.
âYou have no idea how many times I imagined doing that back in high school.â
And she stops breathing again. She really had no idea. Not a clue how he felt about her. Of course not. She was too busy trying to survive.
His thumb traces her bottom lip. Then he gently pushes her onto her back and props himself up on one elbow next to her, a hand resting on her lower abdomen, which twitches and clenches under his touch. Leaning down, he hovers just inches from her mouth. She tries to kiss him, but he pulls back. She tries again and he does the same thing, smirking. The teasing bastard. Finally, she grabs his face and plants a firm kiss to his lips.
His hand shifts from her abdomen to her waistband. Sheâs still in her work clothes. Undoing the top button of her pants, he slips a hand inside, fingers grazing over the wet spot that has formed over her panties. He nips gently at her bottom lip before pulling away and shifting down the couch. His fingers hook into her waistband.
âCan I?â he asks, looking up at her.
She nods, acting like her entire body isnât vibrating with anticipation.
Soon, her bottom half is exposed. He wastes no time in spreading her legs apart and bringing his mouth to her clit. The sudden contact makes her flinch away.
âToo much?â he asks.
âJust sensitive. Sorry.â
He hushes away her apology, then takes his time sprinkling kisses all over her inner thighs. He pulls her legs up over his shoulders, hands firmly gripping her sides when he licks her clit again, more gently this time.
âTastes so good, Y/N. So sweet,â he murmurs against her clit.
She grins to herself, letting her head drop back as he slips his tongue directly into her wet hole. Her hands grasp at the blanket beneath her at first and then the back of his head. No part of her was expecting tonight to go like this. He laps at her pussy like some sort of starved animal until the orgasm rips through her, making her toes and fingers curl.
âFuck, Harry, oh my God,â she stammers out as she comes.
He licks her clean with his tongue, being careful not to overstimulate her. Then he stands up and her gaze lands on the clear outline of his bulge pressing against his sweatpants. When he begins undressing, she starts to move towards him.
âWait,â he says. âStay where you are.â
She obeys, sinking back into the couch, her eyes never leaving him. She knew he was fitâformer athlete and all thatâbut seeing the proof before her eyes is something else. The broad shoulders, the thick pectorals, the insane biceps and quads, but also the slight pudge that has formed around his middle and sidesâshe admires all of it.
He leaves the room for a moment and returns with a condom, rolling it on before sitting down on the couch.
âCome here,â he says, patting his thighs.
Entranced, she crawls over to him. He pulls her into his lap so that sheâs straddling him. Between them, his cock is swollen thick, the veins visible through the flushed skin, pulsing and throbbing in a way that makes her salivate.
âPut it inside you,â he says.
She doesnât hesitate. Her hands grasp his cock. She already knows how full and thick and tight heâs going to feel inside her. She lines his tip with her entrance and presses down slowly, taking him inch by inch, moaning at the overwhelming sensation of his length filling her up.
He hisses, closing his eyes for a moment. âFucking hell, Y/N.â
Once her pussy swallows him whole, he grabs her hips and holds them there. His gaze scans over her face, eyes swimming with lust.
âJesus. Youâre so beautiful.â
He unbuttons her blouse, pulling it off of her, then unclasps her bra. His large hands cup her exposed breasts, fingers tweaking the hardened nipples, making her gasp.
Then with a hand wrapped around her throat, he pulls her in for a brief kiss and says, âRide me, pretty girl.â
And she does. Her hips start bouncing on his cock. He grabs her ass with his other hand, kneading the thick flesh, as she rides him faster and faster.
âThatâs it, baby,â he grunts. âGood girl. Donât stop.â
He thrusts up into her, meeting her halfway. His hand remains around her throat, squeezing lightly at the sides. She wraps her hands around his forearm, keeping it there.
âHarryâŠâ she moans, unable to form any other word with her mouth right now.
âFeels good, yeah? Are you going to come on my cock?â
She nods, swallowing thickly, feeling the pressure of his palm around her throat.
âYeah, you are. Give it to me, Y/N.â
She comes hard, clenching around him intensely and repeatedly. He coaxes the orgasm out of her before following it up with his own, his cock throbbing against her walls and filling the condom with each spurt.
She lets herself collapse on him, burying her face in his neck, his cock still inside her. He wraps his arms around her and keeps her close until sheâs ready to get up. Then he carries her up to his bathroom so they can get cleaned up.
As they lie in bed that night, she reflects on what a turn of events today has been. From her car breaking down to Harry confessing he had feelings for her in high school to them having sex? Her teenage self couldâve never foreseen this. She almost chuckles to herself as she falls asleep.
***
When Y/N awakens the next morning, it takes her a few moments to remember where she is and why she suddenly has curtains on her window that werenât there before. She rubs her eyes and looks beside her to find Harry lying on his side, his soft gaze trained on her. He wraps an arm around her waist and slides her closer with no effort at all. He kisses her forehead and the tip of her nose.
She laughs softly. âMorning.â
âMorning.â
âWhat time is it?â
âNine-ish. Please tell me you have the day off.â
âI do.â She never sees clients on Sundays. Thank goodness.
âGood.â
Then she remembers. Her car. A dreadful groan escapes her.
âWhat?â
âI still have to deal with my car.â
âAre you going to take it to the mechanic?â
She shakes her head. âItâs been giving me trouble for a while. Too many repairs this past year. I fear itâs time to let her go.â
He gives her a sympathetic look. âIâm sorry.â
She stretches her arms overhead. Harry pushes up on one elbow, his green eyes deep in a thousand-yard stare. She can almost see the wheels turning in his head.
âSo, hypothetically, if you were to get a new car, what kind would it be?â he finally asks.
She narrows her eyes at him.
âWhat? Itâs a hypothetical. Humour me, will you?â
âI donât even know. Iâve had this one since I was in college. I never imagined replacing it.â She thinks about it. âMaybe I should go look at some cars.â
His eyes light up. âWeâre going car shopping?â
âWeâre going to look at cars,â she corrects.
âRight. Looking. Very serious, non-car-buying looking.â
She rolls her eyes.
***
As soon as they enter the dealership, car salesmen start circling them like sharks. Harry handles them smoothly, telling them to fuck off in the most polite way possible (âweâre just looking, thanksâ).
He lets her take the lead on where to go first, so she heads over to the row of sensibly priced sedans, though theyâre still far out of her price range. She sits inside one of them. Harry joins her in the passenger seat.
âI like this one,â she says, hands smoothing over the steering wheel.
âItâs very⊠practical,â he says, looking over his shoulder at the backseat, clearly unimpressed.
âThatâs the point.â
âBut it lacks personality, donât you think?â
She glares at him. âHarry, itâs a car. It just needs to get me places.â
He throws his hands up in mock surrender. âOkay, okay. But letâs just look at some more. For fun.â
She sighs and agrees. Why is she not surprised that heâs a car guy?
He takes her over to some of the more high-end models. Y/Nâs eyes rake over the glossy exteriors of the cars, the obscene price tags making her chest cave. Harry excitedly points out some cool features he notices. When one of the salesmen walks over, he doesnât turn them away this time. Instead, he lets the guy tell them about the car theyâre looking at.
Y/N feels strange all of a sudden. Like the world around her is fading into the distance, the salesmanâs voice turning into muffled background noise. Her heart feels like itâs in her throat. Sheâs vaguely aware of Harry glancing at her, his hand finding her elbow.
âAre you okay?â his voice breaks through the fog.
She shrugs him off and heads for the exit. Except she doesnât know where it is. Where the hell did they enter from? Why is this place so fucking big? Why are there no exit signs?
âY/N!â Harry catches up to her and grabs her hand. âHey, stop. Whatâs wrong?â
âI canât do this.â She shakes her head, not meeting his eyes.
âDo what?â
âAct like this is normal. Someone buying me a car? And donât say âweâre just looking.â I know youâre seriously thinking of getting me one. And I know itâs not a big deal to you, but it is to me, okay?â
âOkay, Iââ
âAnd itâs not that Iâm ungrateful.â
âI never said you wereââ
âIâm grateful for everything youâve done for me so far. But thisââshe gestures at the showroom around themââis too much. I canât keep taking from you like this. Thatâs notâ Thatâs not who I am.â Her voice quivers. She swallows hard, pushing down the emotion. âCan we go?â
***
Harry keeps glancing over at Y/N on the way home, wondering if sheâs okay. She appears calmer than she did at the dealership, her gaze focused out the passenger side window, but she looks so defeated, it makes his chest ache.
Did he push her too hard to accept his money? He just wants to help her. Thatâs been his goal this entire time. He thought that buying her smaller things for the clinic might warm her up to bigger purchases, but maybe he was wrong. The last thing he wanted to do was stress her out even more, and now he feels like thatâs exactly what heâs done.
Itâs late in the afternoon when they get back to his house. Y/N is quiet for the rest of the day. She takes a nap on the couch, while he gets some chores done. When she wakes up, they put on some trashy reality TV and eat dinner. Thatâs when she starts to seem more like herself, roasting the guys on the show for their mediocre attempts at impressing the women.
She pauses the show after a couple episodes. He looks at her.
âI need to tell you something,â she says, fidgeting with the remote in her hands.
He nods encouragingly.
âThe clinic was previously co-owned by someone else... My ex-husband, Mark. We met in grad school and came up with the idea of opening a practice together. The first couple years were great.â She pauses, a haunted look creeping into her eyes. âAnd then the complaints started coming in.â
âWhat kind of complaints?â
âMark was flirting with clients. Bringing wine into sessions. Kissing them. Sleeping with them. The list goes on.â
âJesus Christ,â Harry mutters.
âI know. I had no idea. I know that sounds dumb. Our offices were literally across the hall from each other. How could I not have known? But he hid it so well.â
âI believe you.â
She looks at him. He sees the relief there, like sheâs been bracing herself in case he didnât.
âI filed for divorce after that,â she continues. âSeveral clients sued. He lost his license. And then⊠He vanished.â
âVanished how?â
âHis office had been emptied out overnight. He texted me that he was sorry, that he needed a fresh start. And then he blocked me.â
âHardly an apology.â
âYeah.â She scoffs. âAnyway, I was left with the debt. We took out a loan to start the clinic. It was in both our names. When he left, I had to pay it off. And the settlement from the lawsuits. The clinic was liable. I had to pay that too.â
âThatâs not fair.â
âI donât know. Maybe itâs my punishment for being so fucking oblivious.â She shakes her head at herself. âI didnât see what he was doing to those clients. God, Iâm a therapist. I shouldâve seen it. Thatâs my entire job.â
âYou canât blame yourself for that.â
She shrugs, staring down at her hands. Sheâs shaking.
âHow much?â he asks softly.
She closes her eyes. He can tell sheâs debating whether to answer the question honestly.
âThe loan is about 40k. The settlement was way more. Like 80k. Iâve been paying it off for three years. Iâm down to about 60k.â
The numbers donât shock him. He doesnât even flinch. But the fact that sheâs been carrying this burdenâlargely the consequences of someone elseâs recklessnessâall on her own shoulders makes him irate. His jaw tightens. He imagines bashing Markâs head in, then running him over with a bus. Repeatedly.
But beneath the anger is something else. Guilt. The same guilt that drove him to contact her in the first place. Didnât he once exploit her vulnerability too? Perhaps not in the same way as Mark. But still. Is he really that much better than this guy he wants to rip to shreds?
âIâve been paying it off bit by bit,â she says. âBut Iâm barely staying afloat. Itâs a constant reminder of the biggest mistake of my life, and I canât take it anymore.â She finally breaks, the tears pooling in her eyes. âI thought I could do it on my own, but⊠I need help, Harry. And I hate the way I feel when I say that. I donât know if itâs pride or whatââ
âItâs not pride,â he interjects gently. âYouâre just so used to fighting and enduring and working your ass off for every little thing. Thatâs all youâve ever known, lovie.â
She puts her face in hands, body trembling with quiet sobs.
âCome here.â He moves closer and wraps his arms around her. âItâs okay. You donât have to do it alone anymore.â
Harry hardly sleeps that night. He lies in bed, staring at the ceiling, while Y/N is sound asleep next to him. He keeps replaying what she told him about her ex-husband and the debt. The way she took responsibility for someone elseâs actions and called it her punishment made him sick.
He doesnât want her to go through something like that ever again. Not just the financial hardship. But also the betrayal by someone she deeply trusted, someone who was supposed to love and protect her. He canât let that happen again. He wonât.
***
The next day, Y/N and Harry have an honest conversation about how this is going to work. She agrees to let him pay off her debt in full. She also agrees to let him buy her a new car⊠on one condition.
âI get to choose the car,â she says. âNo luxury models. Just a normal, sensible car.â
âBut a Lamborghini would look so sexy on you,â he whines.
âHarry.â She gives him a stern look.
âIâm kidding. Mostly.â He smirks. âOkay, no luxury cars.â
âThank you.â
âNo, thank you for letting me do this. I know itâs not easy for you.â
For the next few weeks, she feels lighter than air. She hasnât felt like that in years. At least not since before the debt. Sheâs sleeping better. Opening her bank account doesnât make her stomach turn. At the clinic, sheâs more present with her clients.
To make things even better, sheâs been spending most nights at Harryâs place. Theyâve fallen into a routine of having dinner together, sleeping together, waking up together, moments of intimacy sprinkled into every interaction.
One morning, she wakes first and heads to the kitchen to make breakfast while catching up on her friendsâ group chat, which was popping off last night, but she was too busy having fun with Harry to read the messages.
Poppy: Mandatory drinks tomorrow night!!
Everyone except Y/N and Cindy liked the message.
Cindy: iâm out of town for a work trip again sorry babes
Jamal: Y/N pls say youâre coming. We need your therapist superpowers
Sara: Yeahhhh I need help dealing with my narcissist boss
Jamal: And my narcissist ex!!! :(
Y/N leaves her phone on the counter with the group chat open, as she finishes preparing breakfast. Itâs been a while since she has seen her friends. She briefly considers the consequences of not going. Poppy wouldnât be too happy. Not because she adores Y/N. She just hates when someone cancels on her plans and acts a bit cold to them the next time they see her. When Poppy plans something, everyone is expected to be in attendance.
Harry enters the kitchen and immediately walks up behind her, hugging her waist and kissing her cheek. She grins and turns her head to kiss him back. Then he moves over to pour himself a cup of coffee. She notices him glancing at her phone on the counter.
âTherapist superpowers?â He looks at her with a cocked brow. âArenât you supposed to be off the clock when youâre with friends?â
She shrugs. âIâm the therapist in the group. They come to me for advice.â
He takes a sip of his coffee and walks over to the fridge, out of sight.
âAre you going?â he asks.
âYeah, probably. Do you want to come?â
âI have some foundation stuff to take care of.â He pauses. âIs Cindy going?â
âNo, she has a work thing.â
âIs it even going to be fun without your best friend there?â
Her brows furrow slightly at the odd question. âYeah, why not? I love Cindy, but I donât need her there to have fun.â
He doesnât say anything.
She turns around now to face him. âWhy do I feel like youâre trying to convince me not to go?â
He shuts the fridge, laughing softly. âMaybe because I am?â
âBut why? You wonât even be home tonight.â
âItâs not about that.â
She stares at him expectantly, waiting for him to elaborate.
âI just got a weird vibe from your friends last time,â he says. âEspecially Poppy. She called you boring to your face.â
âThatâs just how she is. Sheâs insecure and annoying. Sheâs also fun and hilarious sometimes.â
âBut even the others⊠They treat you like a free therapist to help solve their problems. Doesnât that bother you?â
She laughs. âHarry, theyâre joking around. Itâs banter between friends. Thatâs all.â
He gazes at her quietly, like heâs holding back from saying more.
âOkay,â he finally says. âMaybe I misread things.â
She gives him a gentle smile now. âThanks for looking out for me. But everythingâs fine. Really.â
He smiles back, but the skepticism is still there, just below the surface.
***
âIâm glad he ended things, but⊠I donât know.â
âIâm sensing some ambivalence there.â
âI just feel like everyone leaves me eventuallyââ
A loud bang outside the office makes both Y/N and her client jump. The clientâs eyes dart towards the door.
âIâm so sorry. Iâll be right back,â says Y/N.
She hurries out of the office and finds the light in the restroom is on. Inside is a large man lying on the ground beneath the sink with a wrench in hand.
âUm, hi, excuse me?â she says, taking a tentative step towards the stranger.
He looks at her. âHi! Harry said you had a leak in the bathroom?â
A leak in theâ She never told him that. He mustâve caught it himself.
âGood news!â the man continues, beaming like he just won the lottery. âIt was just a loose compression nut. Took two minutes.â He scoots out from under the sink and stands up. âYou have a good day now.â
âWait, donât you need payment?â
âHarry said heâll handle it.â He leaves.
She stands there for a moment, somewhat flustered. She appreciates that Harry had taken care of something that otherwise wouldâve been a nuisance for her. She just wishes he wouldâve given her a heads up to make sure the plumber wouldnât interrupt one of her sessions. She returns to her office and tries to resume where they left off, though the client seems a bit guarded after that.
Her last session runs late, so sheâs the last of her friends to show up at the bar that evening. She parks by the front and joins them inside. Poppy immediately brings attention to her lateness.
âY/N! We were worried you got lost.â
âSorry, things ran late at the clinic.â
âHow are things at the clinic? Any psycho client stories?â
Y/N gives a nervous laugh. âYou know I canât talk about clients.â
Poppy pouts. âWell, thatâs no fun.â
She called you boring to your face. Harryâs words from that morning ring through her mind.
âIs that a new car?â asks Jamal, pointing out the window at her car.
She suddenly regrets parking so close.
âOh, um, yeah.â She starts perusing the drinks menu.
âWait,â says Sara. âDidnât you say a few weeks ago that you canât afford a new one?â
Before she can respond, Poppy says, âHarry got it for her.â
Y/N is taken aback by the confidence in her voice. âWhâ How did you know that?â
Poppy smirks. âI didnât. But I do now.â
Y/N shifts uncomfortably in her seat.
âI knew you looked different,â she says, giving her a once-over. âSo, what? Heâs your sugar daddy now?â
Y/N laughs. âWeâre the same age.â
âDoesnât matter. Heâs buying you a car? Did he get that dress too?â
She doesnât respond. Because the answer is yes. She and Harry went shopping last weekend. She saw a dress she liked with a ridiculous price tag. He pleaded with her to at least try it on, which she did. She fell in love with it. And well, there he was, ready with his credit card.
âHey, Iâm not judging,â says Poppy, leaning towards her. âIf I knew a guy like that, Iâd be milking him for his money too.â
Y/N frowns. âThatâs not what Iâm doing.â
Poppy just smirks again. Y/N tries not to roll her eyes. The conversation moves on to Saraâs narcissistic boss, but she canât stop thinking about how Poppyâs last comment got under her skin. Sheâs not milking Harry for his money. But she can see how it may appear that way to an outsider. And now sheâs insecure about it. Great.
The comment keeps nagging at her for the rest of the night and into the next day. She knows she shouldnât bring it up to Harry. She knows.
And yet, that evening, while theyâre cuddling on the couch watching some corny romcom that she canât pay attention to, she blurts out, âDo you ever feel like Iâm using you for your money?â
Heâs quiet at first, then pauses the movie and shifts on the couch so he can see her face. âWhy would I think that, lovie? I practically had to beg you to accept my money.â
She instantly feels reassured by his answer. But now she has to deal with the concern on his face.
âIt was just something in the back of my mind I had to clear up,â she explains, reaching for the remote to resume the movie, but he doesnât let her.
âIt was in the back of your mind or did someone else put it there?â
She frowns. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âIt was Poppy, wasnât it? Or one of the others?â
She sighs and rubs a hand over her face. âLook, Iâm sorry I brought it up, okay? Letâs just drop it.â
âNo, Y/N.â He sits up, making her do the same. âI donât like that your friends say shit like that. It clearly bothers you too or you wouldnât have brought it up.â
âWhat do you want me to do, Harry? Stop hanging out with them?â
âYes.â His jaw tightens.
She scoffs and leans away from him, genuinely shocked by his response. âWell, thatâs... kind of controlling.â
He blinks, equally as shocked by her choice of words. âControlling? Howâs that controlling?â
âYou want me to stop hanging out with my friends because you donât like them? Do you hear yourself?â
âIâm not trying to control you. Iâm trying to protect you.â
âWeâre not in high school anymore, Harry. I donât need you to protect me from people. I can do that myself.â
âCan you?â
She narrows her eyes. âExcuse me?â
He sighs. âY/N, you constantly let people take advantage of your kindness. Your friends, your clients, your ex? Canât you see? Itâs all the same fucking pattern. I hate it because I love you, and I know you deserve better than that. So, no, Iâm not being controlling when I say you have shitty friends.â
She doesnât say anything. His words settle like a pit in her stomach. Harsh, acidic, and, worst of all, true. Softened only by the confession of love casually thrown in there.
Her job is about recognizing patterns in peopleâs behaviours. Patterns that they repeat from childhood, from past relationships and friendships, from past mistakes. Has she seriously failed to recognize them in her own life?
Harry stands up, visibly frustrated and tired. âIâm going to bed.â
He leaves her on the couch and heads upstairs. She stays there for a while, stewing in her own mix of anger and hurt. When she finally goes up, heâs on his side of the bed with his back to her. She gets in on her side and tries to sleep, neither of them saying a word.
***
The next day, Y/N is up and out of the house before Harryâs even awake. At the clinic, she buries herself in her work, though her mind is still processing the argument from last night. A client cancels last minute without good reason, and she once again waives the late cancellation fee because⊠Well, she canât help it. Maybe Harry was right. She does let people walk all over her.
Still, she doesnât appreciate the way he said it. Implying that she canât take care of herself. That she canât think for herself. That she needs someone else to step in and tell her what to do. Sheâs not that incapable of looking out for herself. Right?
At lunchtime, she stares at her phone, wanting to text him but not knowing what to say. When her screen lights up, her heart flutters, expecting it to be him. But instead, itâs Jamal. Shoving her disappointment deep inside, she picks up the call and listens to her friend vent about his ex for the hundredth time. Ten minutes into his monologue, she finally works up the nerve to lie and tell him she has a client waiting to see her. He takes up five more minutes of her time before hanging up.
Y/N shakes her head at herself, pinching the bridge of her nose. Before her fight with Harry, she might not have thought much of these interactions. Now, itâs impossible to ignore the way she fails to set boundaries with people.
Then she hears someone out in the waiting room. She goes out there to find a delivery person setting down a bouquet of wildflowers on the front desk.
âHi there! Delivery for a Y/N Y/L/N?â
âThatâs me.â
She walks over to the flowers after the delivery guy leaves, feeling the delicate texture of the petals between her fingers. A small note is nestled among them.
Iâm sorry. â H
She sighs, staring at the two words, hating the way her heart liquefies in her chest, hating the way she wants to call him up right now and tell him all is forgiven, and especially hating the way she craves his presence. A craving felt deep in her abdomen, raw and tantalizing.
She recalls what he said to her last night. Not the criticism of her friends or her tendency to let people take advantage of her. But how he said he loved her. The way it naturally slipped out in the midst of his rant, like the words had been sitting on the tip of his tongue for far too long.
Y/N: The flowers are pretty
She texts him once the flowers are in a vase and sheâs sitting in her office.
H: Glad you liked them
H: I really am sorry. I hope you donât really think I was trying to control you
âI donâtâ is what she types at first but then deletes it.
Y/N: I know that wasnât your intention
He doesnât reply for a while after that. He texts again as her workday nears a close.
H: Can I take you out to dinner tonight?
Y/N: Yes
***
Y/Nâs texts have seemed distant today. Harry knows trying to decipher tone over text is not wise, but he canât help it after their argument last night. He hoped that the flowers would show heâs thinking of her and heâs sorry. Not for recognizing that her friends treat her poorly or that she deserves better, but for conveying it in a way that came off as controlling.
He hates the idea of Y/N thinking that he wants to control her life. Sure, every time he sees her, heâs consumed with the primal urge to wrap her in his arms and shelter her from everything horrible in the world, and it takes everything to rein in that part of himself, but he would never want to make her feel like sheâs not a person that can make her own decisions.
When she comes over that evening to go on their date together, he expects her to be just as distant as her messages. But she greets him at the door with a firm smooch on the lips, arms wrapped around his neck. He grins and takes in her appearance. An olive-coloured satin dress with a lace trim around the low neckline and a fuzzy brown jacket over it. Cute gold butterfly earrings. Her hair swept back in a low bun. She looks like a tiny fairy that flew over and put a little spell on him to make him weak in the knees.
âYou look stunning.â He kisses her cheek, then adds with a sheepish laugh, âI realized this is my first time taking you out on a proper date. Iâm not sure why itâs taken this long.â
He knows why itâs taken this long. Because he enjoys having her to himself when theyâre at home, where he can cuddle and kiss and touch her however he likes and not worry about odd looks from anyone while he sniffs her hair when sheâs not looking.
She smiles. âItâs okay. I like spending nights in with youâŠâ Her gaze travels down his body, taking in his appearance now. A dark button-up, sleeves rolled to his forearms, and tailored trousers. His curls are more tamed than usual but not too perfect. âBut itâs also nice seeing you like this.â
A smirk tugs at his lips. âYeah?â
She nods, her eyes flicking down to his mouth, then back up. And heâs a goner.
He takes her face in his hands and kisses her hard, tongue finding hers with ease. She leans back against the door, her hand on the back of his head keeping him close. He reaches down to find the slit in her dress that exposes her thigh. His fingers trail up to her underwear.
She hums against his lips and pulls away briefly. âWeâre going to be late.â
âThatâs fine.â He bites her bottom lip. A soft whimper escapes her.
Dropping down to the floor, he hooks his fingers into her panties and pulls them down her legs. She steps out of them, her heels still on her feet. He adjusts the dress so it bunches up around her waist and tells her to hold it there. Then he lifts her right leg over his shoulder to give himself better access. And then he notices the arousal leaking out of her, the dampness along her inner thigh.
âWhatâs this?â He looks up, smirking when he finds her blushing.
âI was thinking about you on my way here,â she confesses, a little breathlessly.
âThinking what about me?â
âJust⊠Your eyes. Your hands. Your mouthâŠâ She swallows. âYour cock.â
The swelling in his pants intensifies. He digs his fingers into the thigh resting on his shoulder while his tongue nudges her hole. He licks a single line from her entrance to her clit. Heâs not sure how itâs possible, but every time he tastes her, it feels like the first time and it makes him want to devour her even more. His tongue moves ardently between her folds. She nestles her fingers in his hair, grinding her hips against his mouth.
âHarry, that feels so good. Please donât stop.â
Her moans get louder, thighs tensing around him as the orgasm sweeps through her. He licks her clean with his tongue, not missing a spot. Then he helps get her panties back on and rises to his feet. She looks unbelievably cute with her flushed cheeks and dazed eyes.
âNow we can go,â he says.
***
Harryâs hands keep finding her that night. A hand on her thigh as he drives them to the restaurant. On the small of her back as they enter. Caressing her arm as they peruse the menu together.
After ordering, he asks about her day and listens to her vent about a frustrating call she had with a clientâs insurance company. Their food arrives fairly quickly. Heâs about to dig in when he notices Y/N eyeing her plate oddly. Then he realizes.
âYou asked for no mushrooms,â he states, noticing the mushrooms sprinkled all over her plate.
âItâs fine.â She waves a dismissive hand.
âYou should tell them.â
âItâs no big deal.â
He glances around and makes eye contact with their server, waving her over.
Y/N gives him a look. âHarryâŠâ
The server approaches their table.
âHi, I think thereâs been a mistake,â he says. âShe asked for no mushrooms.â
The serverâs brows shoot up. âOh! Iâm so sorry. Weâll get that fixed up right away.â
Harry gives her a polite smile. âThank you.â
The server walks away with the plate.
Y/N glares at him.
âWhat?â
âI said it wasnât a big deal,â she says in a hushed but firm tone.
His brows furrow. âWell, it is to me.â
She sighs and looks away, crossing her arms over her chest.
âY/Nââ
âIâm going to use the restroom.â She starts to scoot to the end of booth.
âYouâre upset.â
âIâm not. I need to pee,â she says flatly without looking at him.
He stares down at his food after she leaves, pondering her reaction to what he thought was a kind thing to do. They brought her the wrong order; he spoke up because she didnât want to. What was so bad about that? He thinks back to their fight last night.
Controlling.
Does she think he was being controlling again? He just wanted to make sure she gets what she asked for. She did say it wasnât a big deal, but he thought she only said that to avoid being an inconvenience. Maybe he was too quick to assume she wanted him to speak up for her. Maybe she felt embarrassed. Maybe he shouldâve asked firstâŠ
She returns a few minutes later. Her food has arrived by then too, without mushrooms this time. They eat in silence for a bit. Then she asks about his day. He tells her about the meetings he had with some of his foundationâs donors and the cute puppy he met on his run that morning, pulling up a picture on his phone. She coos at the happy little Corgi in the photo.
The rest of their night proceeds normally. They finish their food and share some cheesecake for dessert. He pays the bill. They head home.
When they reach his bedroom, he sits on the edge of the bed and begins unbuttoning his shirt, preparing to sleep. Y/N slips off her dress, leaving her in just her panties, then walks over to stand between his legs. She takes his face in her hands. His fingers freeze on the second last button of his shirt. He meets her gaze with curiosity.
âYou said something last night,â she says.
He immediately knows what sheâs referring to. He was worried after he said it. Worried that he chose the worst possible timeâthe middle of an argumentâto say the three most important words. But they slipped out before he could even assess the context in which he was saying them. Maybe thatâs what happens when you love someone as much as he loves Y/Nâit eventually overflows through every crack and crevice.
âDid you mean it?â she asks, studying his face.
âOf course.â
âI love you too.â She plants a tender kiss to his lips.
His hands rest on her forearms, caressing her wrists with his thumbs. Then he shifts one hand to her hip, thumb tracing the lace on her panties. Heâs already thinking about burying his face between her legs again, getting lost in the sweet scent and heavenly taste, but before he can do anything, she sinks down to her knees on the floor.
He watches as she finishes undoing the last two buttons on his shirt, letting it fall open. Then she unzips his pants and releases his hardening cock from its confines. He leans back against his hands on the bed, inhaling a shaky breath as she wraps one hand around the base and her lips around the tip. Her gorgeous eyes blink up at him as she takes more of him into her mouth, tongue stroking the underside of his cock deliciously. She bobs her head along his length, stroking whateverâs left of him with her hand.
âLook so pretty like that,â he says. âTaking my cock on your knees. Just the filthiest sight.â
She closes her eyes and moans around him.
âTouch yourself,â he tells her. âBut donât come.â
Her free hand disappears between her legs, fingers rubbing her clit while she continues sucking him.
âGood girl. So good for me.â
He places a hand on the back of her head, applying some pressure, guiding her mouth along his cock. His tip makes contact with the back of her throat with every other thrust, which alone might drive him to madness. Her moans send the most gratifying vibrations down his length.
He pulls out before he can come and takes a second to enjoy the sight of her. The drool and pre-cum coating her chin. Eyes gazing up at him as if he hung the moon in the sky just for her.
âGet up here, sweet girl.â
As she stands, he positions her face down across his lap. He pulls off her panties and spreads apart her legs. He can see the arousal glistening between her thighs before feeling it with his fingers. She makes a sound when his hand makes contact with her clit, burying her face into her forearm.
âGot yourself nice and wet for me,â he says with approval, inserting a finger into her slick hole.
She squirms in his lap, pushing back against his hand. He removes his finger and lands a sharp spank on her bum, making her squeal.
âStay still,â he warns.
She whines in protest but obeys, keeping her hips in place as he inserts two fingers this time, nudging them in and out at an agonizingly slow pace.
âHarry, please,â she groans, her toes curling.
âPlease?â
âI need more!â
He smiles. âGetting greedy, are we?â
âNot greedy. JustâŠâ
âNeedy?â
She nods.
âYeah? Are you my needy little slut, Y/N?â
She nods again, moaning. He relishes the filthy sounds her soaking pussy makes each time he thrusts his fingers inside and the way she struggles to keep herself still but tries anyway. Then he retracts his fingers and takes his time licking her juices off of them, savouring the taste.
âStand up and bend over the bed,â he says.
As she gets into position, he moves to stand behind her, somehow still in his unbuttoned shirt and trousers. He runs a hand down her spine and over her ass, spanking her once before pressing his cock directly into her pussy. She cries out, hands clawing at the sheets. He lets out a low groan as he bottoms out inside her.
âFuck,â he breathes. Itâs like her pussy was made for him, the way her walls adjust so perfectly to his length, clenching around him just right, forcing him in deeper.
He fists a hand in her hair and starts pounding into her. The sound of his hips slapping against her ass fills the room, but his ears zone in on her moans and whimpers and pleas to fuck her harder.
âSo needy for me,â he chuckles darkly. âMy perfect needy slut.â
His fingers tighten in her hair, pulling her head slightly off the bed. His other hand grips her hip, keeping her steady while he fucks her senseless.
âHarry, Iâm going to come. Iâ Pleaseââ
âCome for me, baby.â
And she does, the orgasm turning her into a quivering mess beneath him. But heâs determined to coax a second one out of her, so he doesnât slow down, only thrusting in deeper and harder, grinding his hips against her ass. She screams out as she comes a second time. He joins in now, letting the elation consume him as he lets go inside her.
Theyâre still for a moment, their breathing gradually slowing in tandem. Then he helps her stand back up on shaky legs, gathering her into his arms, praising how well she did for him.
âLove you. I love you,â she murmurs into his chest.
He kisses the top of her head. âI love you too.â
He finally takes off his clothes, leaving them both naked. They decide to take a warm shower before bed, scrubbing each other clean and deliriously giggling over nothing. Soon, theyâre curled up in bed, limbs tangled, drifting off together.

The next few days are quiet, peaceful. They have a lazy weekend, going outside only to stroll through the neighbourhood and admire the changing colours of the leaves. Y/N notices that Harry seems different. He pauses before doing things for her, asks instead of assuming. Itâs not perfectâshe still has to talk him out of driving back to the Thai place when they forget to add the guava candy she loves into their takeout bagsâbut she realizes heâs trying.
That Friday, she arrives at the clinic for another day of back-to-back sessions, though there are a couple clients sheâs really looking forward to seeing. She tries not to grow attached, of course, but sheâs human and it happens sometimes.
Sheâs taking off her coat in her office when she hears someone in the waiting room. Itâs a tall blonde woman who appears to be in her early twenties with thick eyeliner around her large brown eyes. Y/N doesnât think her eyes could possibly be any bigger until they widen at the sight of her.
âY/N! It is so nice to meet you. Iâm really looking forward to working together.â The woman holds out a hand for her to shake, but Y/N just squints at her, trying to figure out who this person is and how she knows her name.
âIâm so sorry, but who are you?â she finally asks.
âUh, Vanessa? Your new receptionist?â She eventually retracts her untouched hand, clutching the strap of her bag instead.
Y/Nâs frown deepens. âMy new⊠receptionist?â
She nods. âHarry hired me. I used to work for his foundation. He said you had a position open and asked if Iâd be interested.â
âHuh.â She canât help the way her facial expression contorts into an irritated glare.
âShould I just set up over there?â Vanessa points to the front desk. âOr maybe thereâs paperwork to do first? I already got the background check, as Harry requested. I also have theââ
Y/N has zoned out at this point. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she feels guilty for being impolite to this poor stranger, but the guilt is drowned out by her exasperation with Harry. She has half a mind to pull out her phone and call him up right now to ask why he thought hiring a whole employee for her clinic (hers!) without discussing it with her first was a good idea, but she has a session in a few minutes and she needs to maintain composure.
She ends up leaving Vanessa with some basic tasks of cleaning and organizing the back room, which Harry had mostly done weeks ago, but she canât think of much else on the spot and she doesnât exactly have time to train Vanessa on anything.
Compartmentalizing her feelings about the situation carries her through the day. She sends Vanessa home well before 5 p.m., waving off her concerns about ânot getting much done today.â Although she has several session notes to complete, she decides to put it off and head out early for once. It happens that she pulls into Harryâs driveway right as heâs getting out of his own car.
He automatically smiles when he sees her, walking around his car to greet her.
âYou got me a receptionist?â she says, stopping him in his tracks a few feet away.
He tilts his head to the side. âVanessa? Yeah, sheâs great! She worked for the foundation a while back. I thought Iâd pay her for a month, and you can see what you think. I think youâll like her though.â
âHarry, you canât just hire a receptionist for my clinic without talking to me first.â
His smile falters. âWell, I thought youâd say no.â
âExactly!â She splays her hands up in the air before letting them drop by her sides. âIf you had talked to me, I wouldâve told you that I donât want this.â
âY/N, you work twelve-hour daysââ
âMore like ten.â
ââAnd itâs because youâre doing it all on your own. You shouldnât have to deal with all the scheduling, billing, and insurance on top of seeing clients.â
âYou donât get to make that decision for me.â
He just stares at her wordlessly.
âYou keep deciding what I need before I even get the chance to tell you!â She can feel her voice going up an octave and pauses to take a breath. âThis is my clinic. I get to decide who works there. You know how I felt walking in there this morning? It felt like I wasnât the owner anymore.â
His brows pinch together. âThatâs notâ I was just trying to help, lovie.â
âBut this isnât helping. I didnât ask for this.â
âIâIâm sorry.â
He takes a step forward. She takes one back.
âI think I need some space,â she says, rubbing her forehead and averting her gaze.
âY/N, Iâm sorry. I overstepped.â Thereâs something in his voice that she isnât used to hearing from him. Panic? Fear?
âYouâre suffocating me, Harry,â she says quietly, her own chest constricting at the words, but whatâs more painful is the look on his face as she says it. The way he deflates. âI need to be on my own for a bit.â
She gets back in her car and tries not to look at him as she pulls out of the driveway because she knows his sad eyes will make her tear up and sheâll be driving home blind.
***
For the next week, every time Y/Nâs phone buzzes with a notification, she expects it to be him. But it never is. He has been respecting her request for space. She canât say she doesnât miss him though. She misses him when she wakes up alone, when she gets in her car, when she goes home to her empty apartment, which was once just fine.
But intermingled with all the longing is her lingering frustration with him. She canât get past how he thinks itâs okay to decide whatâs best for her without even consulting her, and sheâs reminded of that every time she sees Vanessa behind the front desk, who she still hasnât fired because it doesnât seem fair to let the poor girl get caught up in her and Harryâs quarrel.
At first, the protectiveness just looked like love, but it has since turned into something elseâa threat to her autonomyâand she canât have that. She rebuilt this clinic from the ground up after Mark burnt it all down. That wouldnât have been possible if she wasnât competent and capable all on her own.
When she goes to Poppyâs place for a group hangout that weekend, sheâs already not feeling her best. She sits in her car for five minutes, staring out the windshield with a dazed look, before heading inside. Itâs their usual dynamic at first, everyone talking over each other, not letting anyone finish a thought before moving on to the next, voices getting louder with each minute. Y/N gets interrupted five times, mostly by Poppy, and it grates on her nerves more than ever before.
âCanât believe Cindy bailed,â Poppy says.
âDid she say why?â asks Jamal.
âJust that she has some work thing again.â She rolls her eyes, pursing her lips. âYou know, I donât even think her job is as demanding as she makes it seem. Sheâs in marketing, for fuckâs sake.â
âPeople are allowed to cancel on plans, Poppy,â Y/N interjects.
Everyone turns to her, like she spoke for the first time that day.
âOkay, Y/N. That was rude,â says Poppy.
Y/N narrows her eyes. âWhat?â
âThat sounded so judgmental.â
The irony feels like a slap in Y/Nâs face. All Poppy does is judge other people, from complete strangers to dear friends. For her to accuse anyone else of being judgmental is so absurd that it makes Y/N laugh out loud.
âIt kind of did,â Jamal agrees, making Y/N even more bewildered.
Sara just looks away, quietly sipping her beer.
âAnyway,â Poppy says, changing the topic.
The interaction leaves Y/N fuming in her corner of the couch. Her face is hot. Angry, exhausted tears prick the backs of her eyes, but she holds them in. She contributes nothing to the conversation after that, not that anyone notices sheâs acting any different. They donât know her. They never have.
At some point, theyâre talking about renting out a cottage for the holidays.
âY/N, you should ask your sugar daddy to rent one out for us,â says Poppy in that annoying singsong voice of hers. The condescension masked behind a thin veil of hospitality.
âIâm not doing that,â Y/N snaps.
âWhy not? All you have to do is bat your eyes and heâll open his wallet.â
âFuck off, Poppy. Like, seriously, fuck off.â
Everyoneâs eyes widen. The silence in the room is palpable.
âI was just kidding, Y/N.â Poppy laughs nervously, shifting in her seat. âYou know I was just kidding.â
âNo. Iâm tired of your little jabs and jokes that arenât funny to anyone but you. Iâm done.â
She stands up and walks straight out the door, not looking back. As soon as she gets in her car, she takes out her phone and pulls up her text conversation with Cindy. Her fingers tremble as she types.
Y/N: I hate Poppy
Y/N: I hate all of them
Tossing her phone on the passenger seat, she starts her car and pulls onto the road. Her heart is racing. Her hands grip the steering wheel hard enough to mask the tremors. The adrenaline is the only thing keeping her tears at bay. For now.
Cindy calls two minutes later, her name popping up on the centre display. Y/N picks up.
âI hate them,â she states, voice dripping with venom.
âI know,â her friend replies.
âWhy did I ever think Iâd fit in with them, Cin?â She lets out a humourless laugh. âIâve never fit in. Not in high school. Not now.â
âOkay, thatâs not true. Youâve got me. Youâve got Harryââ
âHarry and I havenât talked in a week.â Her voice breaks now, the adrenaline wearing off quickly with the mention of the man she loves, replaced simply by heartache.
âWhat happened?â
âHe keeps trying to fix things! He got me a receptionist for the clinic without talking to me first. He thinks heâs helping, but itâs becoming too much.â She wipes the tears streaming down her face now. âItâs overbearing.â
She vaguely mentioned to Cindy a couple weeks ago that Harryâs protectiveness was starting to overwhelm her, so none of this comes as a shock.
Cindy pauses before responding, âDo you think maybe thatâs just⊠his way of expressing his love? Like, he thinks he has to solve your problems and make your life easier to show he loves you, but to you, it comes across as overbearing?â
âThatâs probably it.â She sighs, pulling over to the side of the road because she definitely should not be driving when sheâs this worked up. âBut I donât need him to do all that. I just need to know heâs there for me, not to swoop in at the first sign of danger but to trust that Iâm capable of handling things. Am I crazy to want that?â
âOf course not. You just need to tell him.â
She chews on that for a moment. Then her mind returns to her outburst from five minutes ago.
âWhat about Poppy and them?â
âFuck them,â Cindy says calmly. âYou donât need that energy in your life.â
âI donât want you to have to choose between me and them.â
âMeh. Iâve already been pulling away. Why do you think I wasnât there tonight?â
Y/N releases a sigh of relief, feeling some of the tension in her shoulders loosen. âYouâre the best, Cin.â
She can hear the smile in her best friendâs voice as she responds, âYou deserve nothing less.â

Harry has had the worst week. As if Y/N not talking to him wasnât bad enough, he fucked up his hip trying to help his elderly neighbours across the street lift their massive old dresser out of their house.
His hip has been weak for years. He injured it a few times while playing hockey and decided to push through until he literally couldnât anymore, his body revolting against his decision in the form of debilitating hip pain. Surgery and physical therapy worked wonders, but they didnât magically return his hip to its original condition.
This is his first flare-up in a while, but itâs a bad one. A deep ache runs along the front of his hip and groin area every time he stands up. Heâs been limping around the house. Getting comfortable in bed at night is damn near impossible, leaving him awake at odd hours.
He doesnât mind the pain. He can handle pain. What he canât handle is how slow it makes him. The mere task of walking from one part of the house to another takes twice as long. When he gets up from the couch, he has to wait a few seconds for the stiffness to subside before moving. Even putting on a pair of socks takes fucking forever.
Layer on his heartache about Y/N, and heâs downright miserable. He told himself he was helping. That he was making her life easier. But the truth is uglier than that. When he sees a problem, he has to fix it because he canât stand feeling useless. Itâs the same thing that drove him to push through injuries and play through pain until his body gave out. The thing that made him start his foundation. His unrelenting need to fix.
But Y/N is a person. And he keeps treating her like a project. Countless times this week, he found himself staring at his phone, typing out a message to her, then deleting it.
Iâm sorry.
Please talk to me.
You donât have to talk to me. Just tell me youâre okay?
I miss you.
I love you.
It takes everything in his power not to send those messages. She asked for space. Heâs going to give her space, dammit. Even if it kills him. Even if it makes this hip flare-up feel worse than it is.
The house has felt so cold and hollow and lifeless without her around. It used to feel lonely, living here all by himself, especially post-retirement. But he found his coping mechanismsârunning, playing hockey recreationally with friends, foundation work. Now he can feel himself slipping back into that loneliness, but without the same coping mechanisms because his hip wonât cooperate.
On the tenth dayâyes, heâs been countingâsince his fight with Y/N, heâs genuinely considering driving to her clinic and parking across the street just to catch a glimpse of her. Is it creepy? Yes. Has the past week driven him to insanity? Possibly.
Heâs on the couch with an ice pack attached to his hip, weighing the pros and cons of this foolish idea, when the doorbell rings. He groans. It must be his package. He ordered a new heating pad recently since his old one is over five years old.
He braces himself as he stands up, pausing to let his body adjust. Then he carefully walks to the door, ready to greet the delivery driver. But thatâs not who he finds.
âY/N?â
âHi.â She gives him a small smile. Sheâs dressed in a cozy sweater with black tights, her hair pulled up in a messy ponytail, a few strands falling loose around her face. God, he missed her.
âHey. Um, come in.â He steps aside, letting her in before shutting the door.
âI was hoping we could talk,â she says.
Fuck. Sheâs here to break up with him. Fuck.
He tries to ignore his heart plummeting in his chest and gestures towards the couch, letting her walk in front of him so he could limp behind her. But she notices. Of course she does. She notices the way he winces as he sits down next to her. She notices the ice packs. The painkillers.
âYou okay?â she asks, studying him to figure out whatâs wrong.
âYeah.â
She gives him a look.
âItâs my hip.â
Her brows furrow. âDid you get hurt?â
âItâs an old injury. From hockey. It just flared up recently when I was helping a neighbour move their dresser.â
âOh no. How bad is it?â
âNot terrible. Just⊠hard to do some things.â
âLike what?â
âUm, walking. Sitting. Sleeping.â
âSo⊠everything?â
He laughs softly. âPretty much.â
âHave you been resting?â
âYes. Mostly.â
Another look.
âI hate sitting around.â
Her gaze drops to his hip, where heâs now holding an ice pack. The frown is still there, etched between her brow. He doesnât like her seeing him like this. Not because heâs ashamed of the pain, but because this version of himâweakened, slow, uselessâis so different from the way he views himself.
âI didnât know you had hip problems,â she says quietly.
He shrugs. âI donât like talking about it. Itâs why I retired.â
She nods, understanding.
âYou wanted to talk?â
âWe can do that later.â
âNo, itâs fine. We can do it now.â If sheâs here to break up with him, heâd rather just have her rip off the band-aid and leave him to wallow in his misery alone.
âOkayâŠâ She still seems hesitant, her gaze flicking from his hip to his eyes. âWell, Iâve been thinking a lot about why I was so angry⊠And part of it was because you werenât wrong.â
He blinks a few times, trying to hide his surprise.
âIt has been a lot, trying to do everything myself. Especially with the amount of clients Iâm seeing. But the solution isnât a receptionist. I need to reduce my caseload, restructure my schedule. Thatâs something I needed to decide for myself.â
He shifts on the couch, wincing when his hip protests. Y/N watches him unsurely.
âSorry. Continue,â he encourages.
âItâs not the first time something like this has happened. You do it a lot. Making decisions for me. I know youâre trying to help, but itâs starting to feel like I donât have autonomy in this relationship.â
He forces himself to keep his mouth shut and listen rather than getting defensive. Heâs done plenty of reflecting of his own these past ten days, and something heâs realized is that his true intentions are not always translated through his actions.
âIâve seen clients have relationships like that. They donât last. Even when they do, one person ends up resenting the other. I donât want that for us.â
Sheâs silent then, giving him the floor.
âNeither do I,â he says. âI donât know why Iâm like this. I donât know why I feel the need toâŠâ
âFix things?â
He nods. âI donât do it because I think youâre incapable or weak. Youâre the toughest person I know. I justâŠâ His eyes widen. âFuck, maybe I am controlling.â
She smiles sweetly and reaches for his hand. âYouâre not controlling, Harry. You just have a big heart, and you get carried away.â
He stares at their intertwined hands. âIâm scared I donât know how to be any different. I like feeling needed.â
âYou are needed. But not in the way you think. You donât need to save me. You donât need to be âHarry the fixer.â You just need to be⊠Harry.â
For a moment, he imagines what that would look like. Not Harry the fixer. Just Harry. Not stepping in to save the day. Not anticipating every need before it arises. Not making every decision. Just being present, available, supportive.
âIâm sorry I took your choice away,â he says.
She scoots closer to hug him, but when the couch shifts with her weight, his hip screams at him. He winces. She freezes and stands up, leaning down to hug him instead.
âI feel like Iâm sixty years old,â he says, hugging her back, though not as tightly as he wouldâve liked to.
âTake solace in the fact that youâd make a sexy sixty-year-old.â
He laughs.
She straightens up. âOkay. What can I get for you? Water? Food? Have you eaten yet?â
âYou donât have to do that.â
She places her hands on her hips. âYouâre not the only one that likes feeling needed.â
A slow smile spreads across his face. âI havenât had lunch yet.â
âOn it. You stay right there.â She points at him with a stern look before disappearing into the kitchen.
He finally relaxes into the couch, soothed by the sound of her footsteps in the next room, opening and closing the fridge, rearranging pots and pans, humming softly while she works. And he smiles to himself.

It turns out Harry is just as bad, if not worse, at receiving help as Y/N. He tries to do everything himself, even though he can barely walk without being in pain.
âItâs not that bad,â heâll say, then proceed to demonstrate that it is, in fact, that bad.
Itâs actually somewhat amusing for Y/N because she realizes this is exactly how she sounds when she tries to pretend that everything is fine. Theyâre both shit at acting. At least around each other.
She helps him get comfortable in bed that night with a heating pad wrapped around his hip and an extra pillow under his leg. Then she gets under the covers on her side of the bed.
âYouâre so far away,â he whines, reaching for her.
âI donât want to hurt you!â
âYou wonât. Come here.â
She slides into his arms, placing her head on his chest. He lets out a content sigh. As they lie there, she remembers an important update she has yet to share with him.
âBy the way,â she says, âyouâll be happy to hear you were right about Poppy and them.â
âThat doesnât make me happy at all, lovie. Are you okay?â
She nods and lifts her head to look at him. âI told Poppy to fuck off.â
A proud smirk tugs at his lips. âReally?â
âYeah.â
âHow do you feel about it?â His eyes search her face.
âRelieved⊠Sad.â
He kisses her forehead, gently stroking her hair. She rests her head back down.
âI always thought something was wrong with me,â she says. âHigh school. College. After college. Always feeling like the outsider.â
âYou know what I think?â
She smiles. âYouâre going to tell me anyway.â
âI think youâve been trying too hard to fit into places that werenât made for you. I think when you find the right people, you wonât even have to try. Because itâll feel easy and natural.â
âLike coming home.â
âExactly.â
âLike I feel with CindyâŠâ She looks at him again. âLike I feel with you?â
He grins. âI would hope so.â
She kisses him on the lips, soft and tender.
When she pulls away, he says, âIâm sorry, but youâre going to have to help this old man take off this heating pad. Itâs getting way too hot.â
She chuckles, moving before he even finishes his sentence. âI got you.â

Itâs Y/Nâs last day at the clinic before she takes two weeks off for the holidays. Something she never wouldâve done in previous years.
âBut my clients need me!â sheâd argue when Cindy suggested she take some proper time off over Christmas.
But things are different now. The dangers of sacrificing her own needs for the benefit of others are so much clearer to her. The very real possibility of burnout, which she naively considered herself immune to, is also clearer to her. To put it simply, sheâs done with putting herself last on the priority list.
Now sheâs at her desk, about to shut down her work computer when her email pings. The subject line makes her smile before she even opens the email.
Subject: Thank you
Hi Y/N,
I wanted to let you know that I settled into a new apartment six months ago. My new job is going well, Iâve made a lot of friends there. I might actually be going on a first date this weekend. Iâm safe, happy, and hopeful. I wanted to thank you for helping me navigate my trauma and get to a better place in my life. I truly appreciate everything youâve done for me.
Happy holidays!
Sincerely,
Yasmin
Y/N is smiling from ear-to-ear by the second sentence and tearing up by the last one. Yasmin was a former client trapped in an abusive relationship. Together, over the span of two years, they formed a plan to help her leave safely and create a new life where she wasnât constantly living in fear. To read that sheâs still thriving makes Y/N want to ugly cry happy tears. She keeps it together enough to type out a response, making sure Yasmin knows she did the work herself.
After hitting send, she shuts down her computer. Her phone buzzes.
H: Done for the day?
Y/N: Yeah, you?
H: Same. Iâm outside. Got you a little somethingâŠ
She hurries to make sure everything is in its place and all the lights are off before locking up. Harryâs car is parked directly in front of the clinic. Heâs dressed in a hockey jersey and jeans, his hair hidden under a black beanie, a hot drink in each hand. He looks up when she walks over, greeting him with a kiss.
âHot chocolate,â he says, holding out the cup in his left hand.
She caresses his cheek, tempted to squeeze it. âSweetest boyfriend over.â
He chuckles. As they get into his car, he asks, âSo. Are you ready to go to your first ever hockey game?â
Theyâve been watching several games this season on TV together. Y/N asks a lot of questionsâwhy do they fight so much, how is that allowed, why is the net open, where is the goalie?!âand Harry patiently answers each one. Itâs been a fun, enlightening introduction to his world. Now she gets to see it in person. Cindy and her new partner are also meeting them there.
âI am,â she answers. âThe real question is: are you ready to answer my stupid questions about the game every five minutes?â
He starts the car and backs out, his hand automatically resting on her thigh. âNo such thing as a stupid question, my love.â
âIâd beg to differ.â
On the way to the arena, they exchange updates about their day, everything from the mundane to the extraordinary. Y/N tells him about the thank you email. Harry tells her about the new donors he had lunch with. She notices how easy it is, how safe she feels. Safe, happy, and hopeful. Just like Yasmin.
For the first time in years, sheâs not waiting for something to go wrong. Sheâs just living.

YES, BOSS
A/N: im back with some filthy smut, it took me way too long to finish this fic but here we are!
WORD COUNT: 6.7k
WARNING: sexual content
SUMMARY:Â Harry is a lot of things. A talented business man, a known name in the industry, a dedicated CEO and a fucking goner for his assistant. He knows he shouldn't be having dirty thoughts about Y/N and he fights them as much as he can, but when one drunken email gets sent to the worst person possible he completely loses his mind. But maybe, just maybe, that email wasn't the worst thing to happen.
MASTERLISTÂ |Â SUPPORT ME!
This meeting is stretching way too long. Harry knew it would be useless to talk about these topics for an entire hour when he walked into the meeting room, but apparently it would be rude to tell everyone to just email him the numbers and donât bother him. So here he is, staring at his laptop screen, pretending he is reading something, but really, he is just zoning out while the fourth person is presenting something he couldnât care less about.Â
He checks the time, just ten more minutes and he is free to go. He has an entire hour for lunch today and he is not meeting up with anyone either, which is a rare occasion. And it also means he is spending it with Y/N, his assistant.Â
At the thought of her his eyes jump over to the glass wall that separates the meeting room from the hallway and he instantly spots Y/N sitting on a sofa, typing away on her laptop with a focused look on her face. It makes him smile, wondering what she could be working on currently. Her eyebrows are furrowed and her eyes are jumping rapidly on the screen as she reads something and then starts rapidly typing again.Â
He finds himself chuckling under his breath before returning his attention to the meeting, now wanting it to end even more to talk to her. The thought comes to him so easily and fast, he fails to catch himself from sinking further into it. He just starts daydreaming about the smile sheâll gift him once he walks out of the room, about her perfume that will fill his nostrils once he is standing close to her and the way sheâll giggle when he urges them to leave for lunch as quickly as possible.Â
This has been quite frequent lately, Harry finding himself thinking about her, at work, at home, in meetings and at events, whenever she is not with him, but also when she is right beside him. He has no idea when things shifted in his mind, when she moved from just being his assistant to occupying almost all of his thoughts. Itâs been tearing him up, if he is being honest, because he knows he shouldnât be thinking about her this much and in this way. Because his thoughts are often straight up fantasies.Â
Itâs been a reoccuring event lately: Harry waking up after a rather steamy dream that featured Y/N, sporting the worst case of a morning erection which he had to take care of in his shower and then pretend none of it ever happened when he walks into his office and sees her bright smile.Â
Fuck, he feels like an actual piece of shit for having dirty thoughts about his sweet, young assistant who does her job so well and he definitely shouldnât ruin things because of his horny thoughts.Â
An email notification pops up on his screen when thereâs only five more minutes left of the meeting and as soon as he sees the sender his eyes jump up to the person sitting across from him at the oval table.Â
Niall, his CFO, is grinning smugly at him, like he is daring Harry to open the email, though he already knows itâs nothing work related.Â
With a soft sigh Harry opens it and reads the single line Niall sent him.
Stop jerking off to your assistant in your mind.
Harry shoots him a murderous look over his laptop, but Niall just shrugs with a grin and then pretends to be listening to the presenter. Harry shakes his head and types a quick response.
Iâll call compliance on you if you donât stop.
He deeply regrets that one drunken night when he and Niall drank way too much sake and he ended up confessing his attraction towards Y/N, which Niall is not letting him live down ever since. This is the downside of running a company with your best friend, who also tends to be a big pain in the ass. He tells Niall one little thing in a weak moment and heâll bring it up at the worst possible moments.Â
âOur time is up, thank you for your attention, Iâll send you all the slides and schedule a follow-up meeting soon.â
That snaps Harry out of his thoughts as the room comes to life and everyone starts packing and he does the same. Niall walks over to him, leaning closer so only Harry can hear him.Â
âJust bone her already, dude.â
âShut the fuck up or Iâll make sure you end up jobless,â he groans, but it only makes Niall laugh as he pats him on the back.Â
âIn all seriousness, Iâm getting tired of seeing your pining. Just ask her out already!â
âNiall, already told you to quit with it,â Harry sighs as he grabs his laptop and phone and the two men start walking out of the room side-by-side. âWe both know itâs just⊠Itâs not gonna happen.â
âYouâre just making it way too complicated, when itâs not.â Niall rolls his eyes as they step out of the room. Y/N is already standing, holding her laptop to her chest, a bright smile on her face as the two men approach her.Â
âJust⊠let it go, will you?â Harry hisses to Niall, but he just snorts out a laugh before walking away.Â
âHow was it?â Y/N asks Harry as he stops in front of her.Â
âBoring. Letâs eat.â
She giggles with a nod and he ignores the tug in his chest as they head out.Â
Thereâs a sandwich place near the office they both like and itâs not as crowded during lunch time as all the other places in the neighborhood for some reason. Thatâs where they settle, Harry with a veggie sandwich and an iced tea, Y/N with a club sandwich and a lemonade, their usual.Â
âHow is the book hunting going?â he asks between bites. Y/N has been trying to find a first edition of Little Women, a book she loved so much growing up.
Y/N shakes her head with a soft chuckle.
âNot good. I thought I found one the other week, but it turned out to be a scam.â
âWhat about that auction piece? Have you signed up for that?â
âThereâs no way I can buy that. The price starts at twenty-six thousand, my budget is fifteen at best,â she shakes her head sadly.Â
âTold you, I can paââ Harry starts, but she cuts him off instantly.
âYouâre not paying the rest, Harry.â
âWhy not? Take it as a bonus,â he shrugs, taking a sip from his tea. He has offered to buy the book all together, but she just refused to accept his help every time.Â
âSo then I wonât get my usual bonus at the end of the year?â she arches an eyebrow at him.
âOf course you will.â
âThen Iâm not taking ten grand from you just randomly,â she chuckles. âIâll find one that I can afford, I just have to be patient,â she adds and with that Harry knows her mind is set.Â
He wishes she would stop being so stubborn. He would buy it without hesitation if it means it makes her happy. He already thought of just getting it, ignoring all her protesting.Â
âAnyways, I made your schedule for next week. Did anything new come up that I need to fit in?âÂ
âNothing I know of.â
âNo parties or dates maybe?â
âYou know the answer to that, Y/N,â he gives her a look that makes her laugh.Â
Parties havenât been his thing in a while and dating⊠He canât remember the last time he went on a date. Even if he wanted to, he wouldnât have anyone to ask out, because he simply doesnât talk to women in that way. Hasnât been in a long time and he is not ready to admit it, but itâs been since he started to compare everyone to Y/N.Â
The rest of lunch goes by without any work talk. Y/N tells him about the trips she has planned with her sister and Harry listens like itâs his favorite podcast. Really, she could be talking about anything and he would be drinking her words, he just absolutely loves listening to her.Â
Returning to the office is painful, but at least Harry manages to focus for a while as he buries himself in work. Itâs a temporary fix, but a welcomed one.Â
Itâs not unusual for him to stay late, but he noticed that Y/N tends to work late too when he does. As the building starts to empty out Harry is still deep in a task, but he looks up and spots Y/N still sitting at her desk, typing away on her laptop.Â
âLet me remind you again that you can leave before me.â He stops at her desk, hands tucked in his pockets as he looks down at a sleepy-eyed Y/N.
âI have stuff to do.â
âCan it wait until tomorrow?â She bites her lip with a guilty look that answers his question. âAlright, then youâre done for today,â he simply says, shutting her laptop.Â
âBossy,â she chuckles under her breath, but doesnât protest as she pushes her chair away from the desk.Â
âWell, I am your boss.â
âThanks for the reminder,â she chuckles, throwing her things into her bag and rounding it to meet him at the front. âTomorrow?â
âTomorrow,â he nods and then watches as she walks away to the elevators, a heavy feeling settling over his chest that he wishes she was going home with him.Â
Harry returns to his desk to finish up so he can finally go home as well, but when Niall appears he knows his plans are about to get destroyed.Â
âWant to grab some drinks?â he asks, throwing himself down to the sofa in the corner of his office.Â
âIâm tired and itâs Thursday, we have work tomorrow.â
âWhen did you become absolutely no fun?â Niall groans, but doesnât wait for an answer. Instead, he stands and walks over to the minibar where Harry keeps some good whiskey and two crystal glasses. Itâs usually for when they close a deal, a little ritual theyâve been doing since the start of the company. âAlright, then letâs just drink here.â
âAny particular reason for that?â Harry sighs, but takes the glass Niall hands him, leaning back in his chair.Â
âItâs Thursday,â Niall simply shrugs, clinks his glass to Harryâs and then they both take a sip.Â
Harry had a suspicion that Niall wanted to bug him about Y/N again, but surprisingly, he doesnât bring her up. They unwind a little, talk about work stuff and then anything but work as they both empty their glasses before Niall refills them.Â
âOh fuck, itâs already past eleven,â Harry growls after the second glass that already made him kinda tipsy. He hasnât eaten anything since lunch, so itâs hitting him like heâs lightweight.Â
âAgain, when did you become absolutely no fun?â Niall snorts. âBut alright, Iâll call us a car.â
The building is eerily empty when they make their way out of it, laughing at something Niall said in the elevator. They bid goodbye to the night guard stepping out into the breezy night, the car already waiting for them.Â
âAh man,â Nial sighs, sliding down on the seat as the driver heads to his address first. âAre you really not gonna do anything about the Y/N situation?â
âNot this again!â Harry groans. âI told you, itâs not happening.â
âBut you didnât even try! I think you have a good shot with her.â
âDoesnât matter,â he shakes his head, that familiar tug in his chest back again, but he brushes it off. âShe is my assistant, Iâm her boss. Itâs not happening.â
âYou wouldnât be the first person on Earth to fuck an employee,â Niall grins at him wickedly.
âI wonât even be one,â Harry retorts.
âOkay, but I need to know something.â Niall says, sitting up straight, as if he is about to say something serious. âYouâre fantasizing about the nasty stuff with her, right?â
âJesus,â Harry rolls his eyes, just as the driver pulls up in front of Niallâs apartment building. âGood night, Niall!â
âHave you thought about fucking her in your office?â Niallâs grin widens as he opens the car door, but doesnât get out.Â
âIâll see you tomorrow!â Harry pushes on him, urging him to get out.
âCome on! Just give me a crumb!â Niall begs, climbing out of the car.
âNo! Good bye!â And with that Harry shuts the door, cutting his friend off.Â
Itâs only a few minutes drive to his place and those minutes are occupied by thoughts of Y/N thanks to Niallâs prying. He wonders what she is doing right now. Is she already in bed? Or maybe having a bath? What did she have for dinner? Is she the kind to lay her clothes out for the next day? His guess is not.Â
Her bed must be full of pillows and it smells just like her. He wonders what it would be like to lie next to her, pull her into his arms, kiss herâŠÂ
âFuck,â he groans when the driver stops at his building and heâs already feeling himself getting hard.Â
His head feels dizzy as he rides the elevator up to the penthouse, thoughts of Y/N racing in his mind. His phone pings just as he steps into his home. Itâs an email from Y/N.
Found the contracts youâve been looking for. Iâll have them printed and on your desk by the morning!
He smiles seeing her picture on the screen next to her email address, but then realizes that she must be working at home this late as well. Settling on one of his kitchen stools he types a reply.
If you donât stop working right now, I will fire you!
He sends the email, but then quickly sends another one.
Hope you know Iâm kidding, I would never fire you.
Her response came at the same time another email arrived, the second one from Niall. First he opened the one from Y/N.
Never? Thatâs a brave statement! Should I put it to the test?
He barks out a laugh before opening Niallâs email.
So like on your desk? Or her desk? I bet you fantasize about fucking her in the kitchen!!!
Harry groans and decides to ignore him as he goes back to Y/Nâs email to reply, but first he needs some water. He leaves the phone on the counter and grabs a bottle from the fridge while his thoughts start racing again.
He did think about fucking her on his desk. Several times. On hers too. And he would be lying if he said the kitchen never came up in his dirty daydreams, though the one that keeps haunting is fucking her from behind by his floor-to-ceiling windows, her sweet moans filling his office.Â
And just like that, he is hard again. All because stupid Niall wouldnât leave him alone.Â
With a frustrated groan he goes back to his phone and starts typing.
Of course I think about fucking her on every possible surface in the office and in my home, itâs literally all I can think about all the time, especially when she comes in wearing a tight dress or a blouse with a low cut or those goddamned short skirts that make me want to slide my hand under it and feel her warmth between her smooth legs!!! Happy? This is what you wanted me to admit???
He sends the email with an angry tap on his screen, then tosses the phone back onto the counter as he tries to control his reaction to the thoughts.Â
But then his heart skips a beat.Â
His eyes snap to his phone, the screen still unlocked as he grabs it and checks who he just sent the email to, his worst nightmare staring back at him from his phone. He didnât send it to Niall, his detailed fantasy just ended up in Y/Nâs inbox and there was nothing he could do about it.
âShit!â he shouts, dropping the phone as he stares at it with bewildered eyes, hands gripping his hair so hard he almost rips his locks out. âFuck! No!â
He grabs the phone and checks again, but nothing changes, his pornographic paragraph was sent in reply to her last email and by now he is sure sheâs read it, judging from how quick her responses have been. In a frenzy he quickly sends her another email.
Shit Y/N, Iâm sorry, this wasnât meant to you!! I was emailing Niall at the same time and sent it in the wrong thread, Iâm sorry!
He waits, holding his breath as a minute passes by, then another and she finally replies.Â
Itâs okay. Iâll see you tomorrow.
âFuck. Iâm so fucked,â he groans, his forehead dropping against the hard surface of the counter and he even smacks his head against it a few more times, like some kind of punishment for being such an idiot.Â
He has no idea what to do, how to handle it. Whatâs the protocol for when the CEO sends a dirty message to his assistant about wanting to fuck her on every surfice in the office? Is this a matter for HR? What if she quits tomorrow? He wouldnât blame her, not wanting to work for such a pig.Â
He fucked up, big time. But he also knows thereâs nothing he can do now, heâll have to face the consequences of his actions tomorrow.Â
***
He didnât sleep, not even for a second. Harry laid in bed all night, thinking about the worst possible scenarios that could happen because of his mistake. He is on the verge of losing his mind by the time he arrives at the office in a wrinkled shirt and his hair looking like a birdâs nest.Â
He ignores the weird looks he is getting on his way up, only thinking what he should do or say if Y/N is already in. But when he sees her desk abandoned, relief spreads in his veins, however itâs rather short-lived.Â
Is she not here because she is about to quit? Or is she already talking to HR about the email? What can HR do to him? Nothing, he is the CEO. Right?
The spiraling continues as he forces himself to start his usual morning routine of checking his mails and schedule. He manages to sit still for a whole 10 minutes, but then he spots her walking towards her desk.Â
He jumps to his feet as if catching him sitting would get him into even bigger trouble. She is reading something on her phone while walking, so she doesnât spot him right away and Harry has a few moments to look at her.Â
She looks like she always does. Beautiful and effortless, no signs of distress, so that might be a good sign. Then when sheâs just a few steps away from her desk she looks up and their eyes meet.Â
âHey,â Harry breathes out. âCanâUm⊠Can we talk?â
For a second she looks hesitant, but she nods, dropping her bag onto her desk before heading into his office with him.Â
She stops in the middle of the room, at the same spot she always does when she comes in to talk, but her usual cheery vibe is missing today. Harry notices how stiff and uncertain she looks and he hates that itâs because of him. He stands by his desk as he looks at her.
âLook, Iâm really, really sorry about that email. That was⊠So unprofessional and I swear I didnât mean to send that to you, I hope you know I would never put you in such an awkward situation on purpose.â
âItâs fine,â she says, keeping her gaze down at the floor, her voice so quiet he almost doesnât hear her.Â
âItâs not fine and Iâm really fucking sorry, Y/N.â
âNo, letâs just⊠Letâs move past it,â she shrugs, but still wouldnât meet his eyes.Â
âI really hope we can do that, I would hate it if my stupidity ruined our dynamic. Iâm officially promising not to ever reply to Niallâs awful emails,â he adds with a bitter chuckle and that at least pulls a small smile out of her.Â
âYou often email about stuff like that?â she asks, finally looking into his eyes.Â
âHe likes to be a pain in the ass,â he chuckles. âWe had a few drinks yesterday and he started his usual game of bugging me on the way home. I thought once we parted ways I would be free of him, but then he started emailing me. Thatâs something he likes to do recently.â
The words are flowing out of him like he has no control over them. Itâs like he needs to say all of this in order to attempt to move on, so he continues.
âSo he sent me a very inappropriate email about you right when you were emailing me and I guess I had enough drinks to finally give him a crumb of what heâs been trying to pry out of me, but then I messed up the emails andââ
âWait,â she frowns, confusion taking over her expression. âAbout me?âÂ
Harry stops, unsure what she is asking about. âWhat?â
âThe email⊠It was about me?â
âYeah, itâs⊠Shit.â
Thatâs when Harry realizes that in that message, he didnât name her, Y/N had no idea he was talking about her. It was only obvious to him, since he knew he was talking about her. But now he just made it clear to her as well.Â
For a second he feels like he is about to pass out. All along Y/N thought he was just talking about someone, any woman in the office, but now she knows it was particularly about her.Â
Her expression changes, but he canât read it. She opens her mouth to say something two times, but ends up staying silent.
âY/N, Iâm sorry. I thought you knew it was about you. Iâm really sorry, I donât want this to fuck things up between us.â
âNo, itâsâŠâ she shakes her head, as if she is just now snapping out of her thoughts. âItâs⊠fine.â
He wants to talk more. He wants to apologize more, he feels like he needs to, but then Carla, his marketing manager appears at the door.
âKnock-knock! Hey, sorry to interrupt, but thereâs a few things I need your insight about like right fucking now.â
âIâm coming, just a minute,â he says, turning back to Y/N. âIâm really sorry. Are we good?â
âYeah,â she breathes out, her tone is not quite convincing, but he has no time to push it further.Â
âIâll⊠Letâs talk later, okay?â
âSure,â she nods and then walks out as Carla takes her place and business takes over.Â
Harry hates how the conversation ended, he is debating blowing everyone off just to talk to her until everything is resolved, but thatâs not happening.Â
In fact, he barely speaks to her until late afternoon, jumping from one meeting into the other, emergency calls and last minute tasks, the whole day is just one stressful blur.Â
When he finally finishes his last meeting of the day he heads back to his office and sees Y/N in one of the meeting rooms, pacing the floor while talking on the phone. Itâs past five, she should be heading home, but as always, she is working overtime. When Harry returns to his office he finds Niall lounging in his chair.Â
âIâm not in the mood for your games today, Niall,â he bites out.
âWoah, someone is pissed today. Whatâs gotten your panties in a twist?âÂ
âRemember your stupid emails last night?â
âIâm still waiting for your reply on that,â Niall grins, which just pisses Harry off even more.Â
âI did reply to it. Only problem is that I didnât send it to you, I accidentally sent it to Y/N!â
Niallâs jaw slacks, staring back at his friend before the most hysterical laugh bursts out of him. It takes several minutes for him to even calm down.Â
âAnd what now? What did she say?â
âShe didnât realize it was about her, which I didnât know and when I started apologizing like a maniac in the morning I revealed it to her.â
âOh my God, this is like the best comedy ever!â
âIâm glad my misery is so entertaining to you,â Harry grumbles under his breath, massaging the bridge of his nose. He is so tired, he feels like he ran a marathon today, thatâs how much all this stress affected him.Â
âAnd whatâs going on right now? I saw her today, so Iâm guessing she didnât quit.â
âWe didnât have more time to talk, she said we were good, but I donât knowâŠâ
âDude, this is your time. Just tell her you meant whatever you wrote, send me those deets by the way, and finally get your girl!â
âI canât believe youâre still on this shit,â he shakes his head, giving up. âJust leave, Niall. Iâm too tired for⊠Iâm too tired for you right now.â
âOuch!â Niall places a hand over his chest dramatically, but stands from the chair. âAlright, Iâll let you sink into your guilt for a little longer, but just know that I think youâre missing out of the best opportunity ever.â
âLeave already!â Harry groans, gesturing towards the door. Niall shakes his head with a quiet laugh and walks out.Â
He collapses into his chair, a headache already throbbing in his skull from this day. He closes his eyes and lets his head fall back for a bit, hoping to gather some energy to carry on for the rest of the day.Â
He doesnât even hear it when Y/N appears in his open door, only snaps his eyes open when he hears her knocking on the doorframe.Â
âHey!â he sits up straight right away. âCome in. Sorry for being MIA all day.â
âItâs fine, I know how it is,â she smiles softly as she walks in and stops in her usual spot.Â
âAnd Iâm sorry for cutting things short in the morning,â he adds, clearing his throat. âI know you said weâre good, but I just wanted to apologize again.â
âReally, itâs all good,â she shakes her head dismissively.Â
âCan we just forget about it?â he suggests. She freezes for a moment, like she is considering it, but at last she nods.
âSure. Forgotten.â
He exhales in relief, leaning back in his chair.Â
âOkay, good. Now go home, I donât want to see you working overtime on a Friday,â he smiles at her, which she returns, but thereâs something different about it this time, though he canât put a finger on it.Â
âThen you should head home too,â she challenges him, a soft chuckle slipping past his lips as he nods, standing from his chair.
âFair point. Iâll see you on Monday, Y/N.â
âYeah, see you,â she nods, voice quiet as she turns around and starts walking towards the door while Harry gathers his stuff from his desk, ready to leave as well.Â
But then just a step away from the door she stops.Â
âAnd what if⊠What if I donât want to forget about it?â
Her voice is quiet, but Harry hears her, loud and clear. He stops mid-action, gaze jumping over to her figure, her back facing him.Â
âWhat?â he asks, heart thumping wildly in his chest. Y/N slowly turns around, a sheepish look on her face.Â
âWhat if⊠What if I wanted all that too?â
Harry stares back at her, his first thought is that he must have heard her wrong. She definitely did not say that. But slowly, it sinks in that she actually did say that and now she is standing there, waiting for him to say something, anything.Â
He rounds the table, walks closer, but stops a few feet away from her. He notices how nervous she appears, fingers fidgeting with the hem of her pencil skirt, her chest rising and falling as she draws deep breaths.Â
And something switches in him.
âDo you?â he asks, voice low.Â
âWhat?â she breathes out.
âDo you want all that too?â
She sucks on her breath, a heartbeat passes and then she nods. He almost groans, desire flooding his groin instantly as he walks around her, like sheâs a prey he wants to hunt down, while she just stands there, frozen.Â
âI need your words, Y/N,â he says, now standing behind her. He is not touching her, but she can feel his presence right behind her.Â
âI want all of that too. What you wrote in that email.â
âFuck,â he exhales, pushing his body forward just an inch so now his chest is pressed against her back and as soon as she feels him, she leans even more into him.
His hands move to her hips, fingers digging into her soft flesh over the fabric of her skirt, but she is eager to feel him somewhere else, her hands cover his and pull them up, over her breasts, her bluntness sending a shiver down his spine as he palms her.Â
Even though she is practically offering herself to him, he feels like he needs to be cautious, as if he could scare her away at any moment. Her head rolls back to his shoulder, baring the soft skin on her neck and now he has a great view of her breasts in his palms, a scene he has probably played in his mind a million times before. His erection is growing harder with each second and when she pushes her ass against him he canât help the moan that slips past his lips.Â
Leaning down he runs his nose down the side of her neck first, teasing her a bit with the feather-like touch, but then he canât hold himself back any longer, practically latching onto her neck, kissing, sucking, biting the soft skin, making her arch from the sensation. When he pulls back he is happy to see the mark he left on her, bright and clear, almost screaming his name.Â
He moves a hand up her chest, cradling her jaw to turn her head until she is facing him. For a second she looks nervous, almost like a deer caught in headlights, but then he sees the pure desire in her eyes and realizes itâs excitement that has her all worked up, unsure whatâs coming next, but also quite thrilled.Â
He takes a moment, just admiring her this close, the want and need in her eyes directed at him, itâs making him go feral.
âFuck, youâre so beautiful,â he breathes out before leaning in and kissing her.Â
He goes in hard, demanding, wanting to devour her and she willingly kisses him back with just as much fever, twisting in his arms until she is facing him with her body as well, arms locking around his neck while his hands grab onto her ass, pressing her even more against him. She moans into his mouth, grinding against him when she feels his erection pressing into her stomach and he starts walking her backwards without breaking their hungry kissing, right until the back of her legs bump against his desk.Â
Blindly, he pushes everything to the side on the tabletop before picking her up and sitting her on it, her legs caging his waist in an instant as they keep kissing wildly. It feels like a fever dream, Harry thinks, but he doesnât want to wake up.Â
His hands tug her shirt out of her skirt, then he leans back just enough to rid her from it, throwing it behind him as he looks at her exposed chest, now that she is only wearing her lacy bra on the top. The sight of her is so beautiful he needs to take another moment to just admire her. Sitting on his desk, her breasts almost spilling out of her bra as her chest is heaving from her panting. Her lips are swollen and parted and her eyes⊠they are bewildered, full of lust and want, only for him. The sight of her alone could make him come, he swears.Â
Then he returns to kissing her, hands pushing up her skirt to reveal even more of her soft skin on her thighs until the fabric bunches around her waist. Her hands roam his body through his shirt, but soon she starts unbuttoning it, only reaching the button under his pecks, because she is so impatient to touch him she simply starts clawing at his pecks, reaching into the shirt as far as she can.
Harry steps back, a disapproving groan slipping from her lips once he is not pushed up against her, to which he just chuckles softly.Â
âTake your skirt off, baby,â he says as he unbuttons the rest of his shirt as well. Y/N jumps off the table, fumbles with the zipper of her skirt before she can slip it off. It pools around her feet, she steps out of it and then simply kicks to the side. Harry has got ridden of his shirt as well and he is now taking his pants off, leaving both of them only in their underwear. His mouth goes dry seeing the matching set on her, part of him wants to leave it on, but another part of him wants to tear it off her body with his teeth.Â
She leans back against the desk, pushing her thighs together, clearly to get some friction between them as she eyes him standing there in only his boxer briefs, palming himself through the fabric while his hungry eyes are eating her up. Then, with confidence she hasnât seen from a man before he simply takes himself out and pushes his underwear down, leaving him in all of his naked glory. He gives himself a few lazy tugs while watching her with hooded eyes, sending a shiver down her spine. She pushes herself away from the desk, hooks her thumbs into the elastic of her panties and pushes they down while keeping eye-contact. Once the fabric pools around her ankles she kicks the underwear to the side as well and then⊠and idea pops into her head.Â
With Harry still standing there she simply turns around and bends over his desk, peeking over her shoulder to see his reaction, which doesnât disappoint.Â
He stops moving, maybe even stops breathing, eyes glued to her exposed cunt, glistening from her arousal thatâs all for him. His cock twitches in his hand and he lets out a long, shaky breath before stepping closer and dropping to his knees, mouth latching onto her in an instant.Â
âOf fuck!â she cries out, grabbing the edge of the desk to stabilize herself.
He shows no mercy, hands grabbing her ass cheeks while his tongue works wonders, almost making her see stars. If it was his last meal, he would go as a happy man, he thinks.Â
But as much as he would love to spend hours with his face buried in her cunt, he is also aching to have his cock buried in it too. When he stands and yanks her up as well, kissing her vigorously she can taste herself on his lips, but it just makes her want even more of him.Â
With skilled moves he easily unhooks her bra and tosses it to the side before grabbing the back of her thighs and picks her up with ease, walking over to the sofa in the corner of his office where he sat and daydreamed of her so many times before. Holding onto him she starts kissing a path on the side of his face until she reaches his lips, kissing him so deeply he stops in his track for a second.Â
Sinking onto the soft cushion of the sofa he pulls her onto his lap, her wet pussy meeting his erection, making them both moan at the same time and she involuntarly grinds against him, making his cock glide between her lips.Â
âFucking hell,â he curses, head falling back, his fingers digging into her hips. âYou have no idea how many times I thought of having you like this.â
âHow many?â she asks with a coy smile as she keeps grinding her hips gently, just enough to drive them both insane. âDid you fantasize about me during meetings?â
âYes,â he answers shamelessly right away.
âDid you get hard?â
âAlways.â
With each answer her confidence keeps growing, she loves seeing him so gone for her. One of his hands comes up, cupping her breast, making her moan in pleasure, then he leans forward and takes her hard nipple in his mouth, sucking on it hard. Y/N whimpers, fingers sinking into his hair, scraping his scalp with her nails which makes him groan against her skin.Â
âHave you ever been hard, hiding it under your desk when I was in here?â she asks, almost out of breath. Harry nods against her chest, then tilts his face up just enough to look at her, while he swirls his tongue around her nipple.Â
âMany times,â he whispers and she swears she almost came just from those two words and the look on his face.Â
âI need you,â she whimpers, pulling his face up so their lips can meet. âI need to feel you.â
âFeel me as much as you want, baby,â he mumbles against her lips.
âNo, I want to feel everything,â she says, hoping heâll finally understand what she is trying to imply. It takes him a few seconds, but he finally does.Â
âAre you onââ
âYes,â she nods eagerly. âAnd Iâm clean.â
âMe too.â
âI trust you,â she says and the words tug on something in his chest.Â
âCome here,â he whispers, cradling her jaw in his hand as he pulls her face close, kissing her passionately, his other hand reaching down between them, tugging his cock so it lines up with her entrance.
She sinks down on him not too slow, not too fast, both of them moaning against each otherâs mouth as he fills her up inch by inch. Once he is in fully, she takes a few moments to adjust to his size, gently circling her hips slightly.Â
âWant to ride me, baby?â he asks, giving her hips a squeeze.
âYes, boss,â she breathes out and then starts moving.Â
Up and down. Back and forth. She is bouncing on him, nails digging into his pecks, surely leaving marks, but neithe rof them cares. Heâll happily wear them and then once they fade he will have her redo them again and again.Â
When she can feel her orgasm nearing Harry wraps his arms around her and pulls her tight against him, lips crashing messily but she just keeps moving even when her thighs start shaking.Â
âHarry,â she pleads gasping.
âLet me feel you come on my cock, Y/N,â he growls against her lips, his arms locked tightly around her.Â
Then he starts thrusting up, meeting her rhythm and a few seconds later he feels her walls gripping his cock as her orgasm washes over her. He doesnât stop moving, watches her ride through her pleasure before he reaches his high as well, his thrusts staggering. She can feel him pumping inside of her and seeing him completely lose himself in her is something she will never forget.Â
They stay like that, Harry is slowly softening, but he is still inside her as they lazily kiss. When she leans back she reaches down and collects some of his cum that has dripped out of her with her finger and he watches as she sucks it off before letting her her finger go with a pop.Â
âJesus, youâre killing me,â he growls, head falling back, but she just chuckles and kisses his chin.Â
âMm donât tell me youâre done for today,â she smiles at him coyly. Harry looks up at her in awe.
âNot at all. But why donât we go back to my place? I have quite some fantasies to fulfill with you there as well.â
She leans closer, but stops before their lips could meet, then whispers: âYes, boss.â
