The Final Chapter

Armouriam’s One Year Anniversary

Two months had passed since the worst day of Jade’s life. Today was supposed to be the best. Kit had promised as much a year ago. She’d gifted her girlfriend the jade stone necklace that now lay like a cold memory on her own chest, and Kit had promised that 365 days later, she’d get down on one knee.

A foolish, naive, hopeful Jade still wishes for it to happen. She wishes that she’ll walk out of the bedroom to find Kit covered in flour, attempting Elora’s buttered muffin recipe or frying bacon. She wishes that when she walks downstairs to the gym, Kit will be in an archery lane, shooting arrows instead of turning on the lights and opening the gym. She hopes that when she closes, Kit will take her hand, and lead her up stairs, that they’ll start to get changed into something nice for dinner, only to forgo the plans altogether in favor of skin sliding against skin. She wishes for Kit’s question to spill over kiss-swollen lips as she kneels beside their bed.

KIT TANTHALOS & JADE CLAYMORE

Freshman Year

Elora Danan hates her roommate. Mims and Ranon had tried to reason with her, had tried to her that everyone has crazy freshman roommate stories. But her step-siblings didn’t know Kit T.

To be fair, Elora didn’t even really know Kit T. She didn’t even have her phone number, just the name on their door, Kit T next to Elora D.

Elora, in practice, isn’t a hateful person, but in the three weeks they’ve already lived together, Kit has managed to set their microwave on fire, sleep through every blaring alarm she’s set, and just be so mean in general. Elora had really wanted to make friends. Growing up, she’d never had any. But Kit T was not going to be her friend.

“She can’t be that bad,” Airk, the boy with beautiful hair who called her Dove, said as they lay together on her twin bed.

“Look at her side of the room!” Elora gestured to Kit’s side of the room, “The she-devil is a mess!” She-devil was the nickname she’d given her roommate. Elora wasn’t even sure she’d mentioned her roommate’s real name to her new boyfriend.

Truth?

It was nearly 3 am by the time the cab pulled up in front of Armouriam, and Jade led Kit up to the apartment. They’d barely turned on any lights, opting to maneuver sleepily in the dark. Jade found Kit sleep clothes along with spare blankets and a pillow for the couch. All in all, they were both asleep within ten minutes of their arrival.
