ReadCon: What have you been up to since ReadCon 2013?
Christine Ni: Where do I start? Well, on the Chinese culture side, apart from keeping the new website full of new content, Iāve tried to get out to as many smaller events as possible, with my panels and talks, including CamCon, and a few events at London galleries. I also had the pleasure of mixing my love of books, with my love of geekery, editing the 2014 con book for Kitacon Invasion. I really enjoyed the project, mainly because of the fantastic range of content, from great illustrations to articles on Shinto, the Kita community and of course the F.A.T.E. project, which I had been invited back for the finale, reprising my role as the deadly Lady Title!
Away from conventions, I have helped set up a charity, aiming to bring together Chinese people in the UK, and promote British Chinese cultural exchange. The Chinese Gateway Community, I hope, will be a comprehensive information source, where people could go and find all the China related events happening in the country. Theyāve just finished setting up their new website, which allows different organisations to post their events up there. I feel that this is the start of something very promising.
RC: Your panel last year was on the classic work of Chinese literature āJourney to the WestāĀ and the countless works that take inspiration from it; which is your favourite āJourney to the Westā adaption?
CN:Ā That is a very difficult question. There have been so many brilliant adaptations and reinterpretations since the novel was written hundreds of years ago. I love the original 1986 Chinese TV series I grew up with, and that will probably always be the definitive one to me, but I find the gun-toting anti-heroes in Kazuya Minekuraās 1990s manga adaptation Saiyuki Reloaded super cool. I am really impressed with how well the fantasy and pan-Asian elements are brought out in the new 2011 Chinese TV series.
Dragon Ball is also very important to me. Thereās a wonderful mix, with everything I could possibly want in a comic, action, sci-fi, comedy, robots, ancient Chinese elements, strong female characters, all growing out of this important classical text. Itās such a strange, yet understandable reinterpretation of the Buddhist idea of benevolence via the characterization of Goku.
Ā RC: What areas of Chinese history and culture are you particularly interested in?
CN: My favourite historical periods are always those that produced great literature. The Yuan & Ming eras, 13th to 17th century, reaped the benefits of both the invention of mass printing and ripening of literary movements that had developed through centuries of gradual urbanisation of society and rise of popular entertainment, such as the play and the novel. But thereās been this very long pattern of upheaval and creativity running through Chinaās magnificent history. After a century of political upheaval, China is finally under a certain level of stability again, giving it room to develop its modern home-grown culture. This is very important for a country that has lost much of its traditional heritage and has had to borrow a lot of Western modernity. The 80s was when China gained its current political and economic freedom, and after a couple of decades of emulating artists of other countries, outputting works that deal with recent painful history, Chinese popular and sub cultures are taking off, right now, from the manhua (Chinese for comics), to Chinese steampunk, which is giving the Wuxia (kungfu fantasy) films a new energy and edge, to sci-fi, a very new genre to China, though some short stories did win the Hugo Nebula Award recently. So yes, a really exciting time at the moment.
Ā RC: What are you working on at the moment?
CN:Ā Right now, Iām working on Shaw Sisters: The Fighting Women of Hong Kong Cinema, which is of course, going to premier at ReadCon 2014. Shaw Brothers films had such a huge influence on subsequent Chinese as well as Western cinema, yet the West mainly knows it for its hard-edged, male dominated kungfu movies. Thereās so much more to Shaw. If I let myself, Iād talk for hours on the subject, but I wonāt say too much about it now⦠spoilersā¦..
Iām also just putting the final touches on a documentary Iām helping to translate, working with the Chicago music journalist John Yingling, who travelled across China, attending gigs, discovering underground bands, soaking up the indie scene. It was a joy to translate the interviews, and Iām going to be editing the rough cut later this month. Iāve just got permission to put a tiny snippet of it on my website. I canāt wait to see the finished thing.
Ā What are you looking forward to at ReadCon 2014?
CN: Iām looking forward to sharing my panel with ReadCon otaku, really looking forward to seeing the fantastic cosplays, and seeing how you all build on the fantastic event you did last time. Things like your Slender game was awesome, and really made use of the space. I also loved meeting the indie artists in the dealers room and, well, just chatting to the con attendees and fellow guests! I ended up talking to a group about Arthurian Legends and Tir Na Nog, comparing them to Three Kingdoms, and Chinese mythology. Itās a subject I really look forward to returning to. Maybe as another talk, or event
We would like to thank Christine for her time. Tickets for ReadCon 2014 are on sale; please emailĀ [email protected] for further details.Ā

Interview with James-Head of RPG Room and Panelist.
Interview No 2!
This time, we're interviewing James Fleming, who last year ran the very successful RPG (Roleplaying Games) room in Cafe Monidals (a role he returns to for ReadCon 2014), Ā and who will also be running a panel on RPGS.Ā
(Just a reminder that details for how to buy tickets for ReadCon 2014 can be found here. VIPs are very limited, so don't delay!)
ReadCon: What have you been up to since ReadCon 2013?
James: Since ReadCon 2013, I have been working hard on my Masterās degree at university, but in the background, I have run one campaign, and been working a little more on my own system. All in all, however, it has been pretty slow!
Since October, though, I have been working on The Talinz Project, which is my blog. I try and post 1000 words there weekly (I manage it most weeks), that steadily details a Science Fiction setting for the Fate RPG by EVil Hat Games. Its got robots, and advertising and NASCAR and Isaac Asimov galore, so itās pretty fun.
Ā RC: Youāre Running the RPG Room; what systems can we expect to see at ReadCon 2014?
J: Well, last time we brought a host of systems. But you can definitely expect old stalwarts, such as Dungeons and Dragons, which always get a good turn-out, and Maid, a Japanese anime-themed RPG that Iāve always known to be well-received at anime cons. Last time, Fiasco went down pretty well, so I will probably be bringing that again too!
Iāll be prepping stuff for Hong Kong action cinema system Feng Shui, Dogs in the Vineyard, a wandering cowboy game, and perhaps a few games that are āPowered by the Apocalypseā, a family of games birthed from Vincent Bakerās Apocalypse World.
Iāll be taking requests, and bringing my laptop, filled with lots of different pdfs beyond those I have mentioned, and probably bunches of dead leaf books too, so pop on down anytime and see if you fancy anything Iāve brought.
Ā RC: Do you have a particular favourite RPG system?
J: Anything written by me?
Any person who has been DMing for a long time has a few soft spots for systems. I am particularly partial to Feng Shui and Dogs in the Vineyard. 4th Edition D&D, on the other hand, gets a lot of flak, but is also hits a weakness in me somewhere that no other game is quite able to fill.
I think whatās most important though, is that your system fits the kind of stories your group wants to tell. Iām always on the look-out for new systems, and frequently pick up obscure RPGs with every intention of foisting them on the next group of willing participants in my next hair-brained scheme. For example, I really want to facilitate a game of Sea Dracula⦠But I canāt find anyone willing to play an awesome surreal anthropomorphic lawyer dance battle RPG for some reason, which makes me sad.
Ā RC: We understand that youāre working on your own system? Tell us about it!
J: Yeah! Itās called Humours, and is an urban fantasy game about playing people in the modern day with the gift of prophecy. The players can see the bad things coming, and the bad things that might happen if they donāt do something, but often they only see part of the picture, and the fun comes from compiling all of that together, and the suspense of a growing endgame each arc that all the players already know is a thing, by seeing the pieces fall into place. It uses packs of cards instead of dice to determine the results of events, so success and failure is determined by how a character manages their physical and mental resources, rather than by chance. The name comes from the Ancient Greek Humours; their associated dispositions are the gameās equivalent to mental and social statistics.
Humours is currently in its second playtesting stage (By which I mean I have made revisions from my first playtesting stage and I have yet to throw it back out to folks to test it out). It has a few different models at the minute that I want to try out, that lean in different directions, towards different kinds of games that I like.
Ā RC: (From Ieuan Jones, via Facebook): Have you ever felt burnt out as a GM: felt your games weren't running well or were sick of the system but the campaign hadn't ended? What advice would you give for people who go through this?
J: Yes, quite a few times. Talking to your players about it always helps. It might be that they feel the same way, and have a few ideas to make it better. Alternatively, another way is to push to a climax that little bit faster, to get it over with. I find that the campaigns I never got around to finishing are always the ones that stay on my mind the longest, even if I wasnāt massively into running them at the time. Above all, though, remember that GMing, just like playing, is meant to be fun. I talk a lot about the GM role facilitating fun at the table, but if the GM isnāt enjoying it himself, it shows. Again, this is an issue that often resolves itself by chatting to players. Maybe they would be willing to take the reins for a few sessions or give you a recharge break too.
I experienced a bit of GM burnout myself this year. After finishing up a campaign I had been running, and really enjoying running, I should add, a few months ago, I have been enjoying taking a back seat for a while. It occurred to me that this has been the first time in 4 years when I havenāt been GMing an RPG, and I am enjoying the rest for a bit!
Ā Ā RC:Ā What subject is your panel upon?
J: Last year, we spoke a bit about writing your own systems. This year, I want to talk about running games, and build on last year by discussing how my playtesting is going, and talking about some of the maths behind games a bit. But donāt worry; I wonāt be going all algebraic! It is all pretty understandable to folks all around. Iām sure my running mate, Mickey, also has a few of his own priorities to talk about too!
Ā RC:What are you looking forward to at ReadCon 2014?
J: I sadly missed Christine Niās panel last year (as we were giving the RPG one at the same time!) but Iād love to see her. Sheās very passionate about Chinese culture, and I think she really conveys that in her talks. It is well worth checking out! Asides from that, I expect I will be trolling around in the RPG room for most of the day, so I am quite looking forward to all the new folks I get to meet there!
We would like to thank James for his time, and look forward to seeing him at ReadCon 2014!Ā He can also be found on twitter atĀ https://twitter.com/RPGFlemingĀ and at theĀ Talinz ProjectĀ Blogspot.Ā

So we'll be appearing in a local newspaper in the next few weeks. One of the questions we were asked was
"What/who are the most popular characters / games?"
What do you guys think? We'd love to know.
