I finally jumped on the @mysticmondays train in time to order an Imperfect Deck, which still looked pretty perfect to me. As I was doing my getting to know you flip through, I paused; up to that point, everything had been in order, but Temperance was not where I expected to find it between Death and the Devil. Where was my stalker card, my birthday card? (I was born July 7: 7 and 7 is 14.) I couldn't see it anywhere in the cards to come, and I didn't think a missing card was part of the imperfections that could be part of the imperfect deck. I needn't have worried. Temperance was hiding at the very end, behind the World. I think it wanted to make sure I noticed it. It's always been one of my favorite cards, a respite between the suspension/sacrifice and release of Hanged Man/ Death and the bondage/catastrophe of the Devil and Tower on either side. I'm still not back in the Night Vale fandom. I listen occasionally, skipping the long litany of advertisements and announcements at the beginning. (When I care, I read those on the internet. ) But, I am back in the tarot fandom for good, I suspect, and I really don't know if I will ever connect with this beautiful dark deck.

I shuffle, I find the High Priestess, and behind her veil is the implacable purple visage of the Devil. I’ve been listening to the podcast Mabel, and I’ve reached Season 3, when the formerly missing Mabel takes over the story. I’m definitely more of an Anna than a Mabel, more of a caretaker than a wild soul, on the surface - but just like no one is wholly introverted or extroverted, wholly thinking or feeling, I am not only a caretaker. And the Devil tells me that my deepest wisdom lies not in my superego, not in what others think of me, even as I work a job that invites the thoughts of others into my space even while I sleep. The deepest wisdom is in my shadow, cold and frightening as it may be. The shadow lies, the shadow tries to bury me, but if I slice through its facades there is raw, chokingly potent insight at its core. “We girls, we women, we witches, we creatures of macabre and strident moonlight, we sirens and harpies and sphinxes and banshees - we tear out of every cage we are thrown into. The Four of Cups is a stalker card for me. In the Smith Waite tradition, the person under the tree looks content in their apathy, eyes closed to the hand offering them a cup. Similarly, here the shell lies safe on shore, beyond the reach of the larger forces surrounding it. The water in this card tells me to remember my dreams, to carry my intuition as I would a precious jewel. The Four of Swords and Ten of Cups flank it. The Four of Swords, together with the four of cups, suggest a remove from the lightning-strike eureka that I want to access in my creative work. I strive toward it, and I don't catch it in a jar, so I lose myself in self-defeating tales of failure. These cards say, no more of that.
