fucks me up how Rei in NGE had like a really interesting character arc that can even be interpretted as a transfem narrative (self-discovery, abuse by fatherly figure, abuse by cis girl who centers herself and finds you an acceptable outlet of her own pent up issues, being seen as not really human etc) but then in the Rebuilds its just⌠nothing lol. Theres no real characterization its all just moeshit tropes! Fuck Anno for real.
Another reminder that Evangelion is a series which has fundamentally fucked Hideaki Annoâs life - he started working on it after directing Nadia - the Secret of Blue Water sent him into a depressive spiral, then ran out of money while making the show, got death threats from the fans, rewrote the ending, and then somehow was convinced or pressured into making a new movie series that sent him into depression once again. At this point, Rebuild is just a cash grab from the Eva fanbois and maybe a fuck you from Anno.
looks like to me that heâs doing quite fine for himself - he seems to have his own studio which makes him so much money that he can afford to sit in idleness for years at a time. He made the rebuilds entirely out of his own free choice. Heâs not some sort of poor artist that is forced to work on art he doesnât like, heâs a hack and an otaku *with his own, fully staffed studio* that literally wrote his own fandom version of Asuka into canon, in an official evangelion movie, just because he could. In this sense, it was a huge fuck you to the fans - the people who were expecting movies with a somewhat coherent narrative, good characterization or at the very least just a remaster of the original show (this would have required almost zero effort from our oh-so-depressed genius, and would have most likely netted him insane amounts of cash anyway). So yeah, Anno is a huge hack, and the original show and EoE was a huge success not because of him, but despite him.

Like, these are the same people who roll their eyes and ignore or even straight up deflect and deny when people bring up like, the fact that Hideaki Anno has a long history of racism and fascism in his works, most notably in Nadia and Gunbuster, because they liked Neon Genesis Evangelion, and refuse to even entertain that NGE, too, is mired in reactionary hysteria made in the middle of the Lost Decade after decades of Japanese exceptionalist prosperity.
I mean, to some degrees, it must be liberating to just call things you like âreactionaryâ and things you enjoy ânot-reactionaryâ and never having to distance yourself from things you previously enjoyed or re-assessing things you did not understand when youâve been provided context, but imagine living like this all the damn time.
Yeah, and a good question! Though the post is about the general tendencies that a lot of people, especially White Westerners, have towards media that have context they are not immediately familiar with, Annoâs own history of imperialism aplogia and advocacy for fascism is talked about a bit. Specifically for Gunbuster, there is a close reading of Gunbuster regarding subjects and language surrounding imperialism and Annoâs treatment of the issue.

Last words
The first in a series of essays covering Hideaki Annoâs landmark mecha-anime, which is finally globally available through streaming.
The year is 2015 in Evangelion, and it has been fifteen years since the global cataclysm known as the âSecond Impact,â which drastically altered life on Earth. The story that everyone in this series has been told up to this point is that a meteorite landed at light speed in the polar ice cap causing it to melt almost instantaneously. As sea levels rose and the vapour from the melted ice turned to rain, evacuation orders were put into immediate effect. Earthquakes came next and tsunamis followed, killing two billion people in their wake. The refugee crisis that settled in afterwards gave way to warring nations, food shortages, and nuclear tension becoming nuclear war, where another atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. Nations came together after some time and what was left of human civilization tried to rebuild itself in the blood, ash, and fire that came with the polar ice cap melting. Itâs optimistic to see that even in these disastrous circumstances the human race could still push forward, live, and not run away from our problems, but before humanity could stand again half the population would be wiped out, as well as countless mass extinctions of wildlife. This is the only world that fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari has ever known, and he is the Earth's only hope as an alien species of giant monsters dubbed as âAngelsâ have come to Earth in hopes of destroying the life that humans have rebuilt.

depending on the times both characters were born, MISATO's natal sun and SHINJI's natal moon may align within a few degrees of each other. if they do, the two share essential purpose. for this synastry aspect, I study the relationship as the sun becoming nourished by the moon and the moon becoming fulfilled by the sun. by understanding the moon through a reflection of its own history and itself as further along a path they both take, the sun energizes and verbalizes the moonâs deepest motivations and emotions.
in Evangelion, Misato's and Shinjiâs processes of transforming their shared self-loathing into self-acceptance structure the storyline. throughout the series, Misato asks Shinji, in different words and ways, of his purpose: âwhy are you here?â the first and only time prior to Instrumentality that he tells her a direct response, he answers after hearing Misato share her own objectives. his truth reflects hers.
symbiosis may morph into dependency as with Shinji and Misato. Shinji folds himself into a deferential role to protect himself from pain, and Misato satisfies her critical sense of responsibility through Shinjiâs dependence on her. this role-heavy aspectâfragile/strong, emotional/responsible, student/teacher, protected/protector, guarded/guardianâbecomes the structure for projection, false dichotomies, and rigid expectations that synthesize into a dangerous base for disappointment and resentment to fester.

so, I'm letting this series come more organically and I'm welcoming retcons and errors. in the spirit of that, I already found one! I pulled the title from a sentence Makoto says in Episode 25, a translation from this transcript. in this version, Makoto says:
With time, with space, with other people, the world of your own.
the scenario being, he's telling Shinji what kind of reality Instrumentality is.
in the kissanime subbed version, he says:
A world for yourself that exists without time, space or others.
what a difference! for both, I like the approaches they each can offer to thinking about Instrumentality. cool to catch.

a series of notes where I study Evangelion characters and their relationships through astrology. for background, I learn about Western astrology, so thatâs the tradition I come from. I base birthdays off a version of Evangelion canon where characters' birthdays are based off their seiyuus'. birth places, I get from information Iâve gleaned from othersâ analyses about where characters might have been born. the title comes from Makoto, spoken during Instrumentality in Episode 25. stay tuned!
