Vhagar’s breath was said to be so hot that it could melt a knight’s armor and cook the man inside. By the time of the Dance of the Dragons, at the height of her size and power, she was the largest of the Targaryen Dragons, having grown to be almost as large as Balerion.

Born in Dragonstone during the Century of Blood, Vhagar was ridden by Queen Visenya Targaryen during the War of Conquest. She was used against the Arryn fleet in the Battle in the waters of Gulltown, she was deployed alongside the other two legendary Targaryen Dragons in the Field of Fire, and later she was flown by Visenya to the Eyrie to ensure the submission of the Vale. During the reign of King Viserys I, Vhagar’s rider was Laena Velaryon, and shortly after her death, she was claimed by the young prince Aemond Targaryen. In the first days of the Dance of the Dragons, Aemond used Vhagar to kill Prince Lucerys Velaryon and his dragon Arrax within sight of Storm’s End. During the Battle at Rook’s Nest, Vhagar and Aemond, along with King Aegon II and his dragon Sunfyre, ambushed Princess Rhaenys Targaryen and her dragon Meleys. Vhagar and her rider were the only ones to leave the battle unharmed. She was later used to take Harrenhal and to set fire to much of the Riverlands, causing more destruction than an entire army. Vhagar, the last of the dragons of the War of Conquest, died along with her rider Aemond at the legendary Battle Above the Gods Eye against Prince Daemon Targaryen and his dragon Caraxes, having lived to be 181 years old.
