STAYING MOTIVATED IN COLLEGE:
A GUIDE BY JUNIORINCOLLEGE
Disclaimer: This is not a guide that you need to follow 100%. This is also not a shortcut on how to be a good student; it will not provide you with straight A’s and a perfect GPA. Furthermore, this post is guided towards college students, but some aspects could benefit HS students as well.
TIP 1: CLEAR OUT YOUR ROOM
Especially your desk area! After the previous school year ends, during the first weeks of summer break, I try to look through and get rid of the materials that I’ve collected throughout the semesters. I use binder folders for each school year and keep only handouts and syllabi that might be useful in them. I also keep some notebooks for reference, because you may never know when you will need them. However, as the summer goes by, my desk still gets cluttered and it’s really nice to just reorganise and deep clean not only my desk but also my room. Having a clean space can be very refreshing and motivating!
This is important, because to do lists allow you to see everything that you need to do for that day (or that weekend). You can break up tasks by using an order system of importance and once you’ve completed reading that chapter or writing that short paper you can just cross it out of the list! After completing several tasks and crossing them out, you will feel more control over everything that you have set to do and feel motivated to continue working! I like to use an app called WUNDERLIST for organising all of my to-do lists (especially on the go) and setting reminders, especially on the go. In addition, I also use a simple notepad, where I write down all of my homework, like THIS. By using a notepad, I don’t need to follow a certain format or have a neat handwriting and this allows me to have a simple system that does not take too much time!
TIP 3: FIGURE OUT YOUR MOST PRODUCTIVE TIME OF THE DAY
I like to work and go to class in the mornings, because I’m a morning person, which means I wake up early, and I can also focus the most while working. In addition, I can also start doing my homework or work on assignments/projects in late afternoon 5-6 pm. But that might not be the same for you! Click these links HERE and HERE to learn more about how to find your most productive time of the day! I found them extremely helpful!
TIP 4: REMEMBER YOUR GOALS OR SET NEW ONES
Most likely there is a reason why you are working so hard. We should all set goals. It is important that they are attainable and if you want more information about that, you can click HERE and HERE. I try to set new short-term, achievable goals for each semester that cover academic, social and extracurricular aspects. When you are feeling low and have lost motivation, it is great to remind yourself why you are doing this for! So set goals!
Sometimes you may be feeling unmotivated because of exhaustion. Whether you are doing too much and overwork yourself, don’t get enough sleep or experience a lot of anxiety, remember that it is good to take a break. Maybe you need to take a shower and catch up on sleep, or need to get away with your friends and not think about school and upcoming exams that are stressing you out. Go have fun! I’m sure you can manage your time and a little break will not hurt you!
TIP 6: COMPLETE THE HARDEST TASK FIRST!
This is very important! Sometimes, you may feel unmotivated to do schoolwork because you have to prepare that presentation, or write that 10 page paper in a couple of days… Start with the hardest task first and work your way through! Even if it takes you a couple of days to complete it, once you will be done with it, you will feel accomplished! This, in turn, will motivate you to do more! However, sometimes it might not work, and it will be better if you start completing smaller tasks, working your way up! It all depends on how unmotivated you are to be productive!
TIP 7: DO THE THINGS THAT YOU ENJOY!
If you have a hobby, or like to dedicate time in your schedule to take breaks and do something you enjoy, make it a part of your day! Include a time slot in your planner/calendars, and dedicate that time to reading, exercising or something else that you enjoy! Afterwards you will feel refreshed and motivated to continue to do work!
