the "my favorite character did nothing wrong" mindset is completely unappealing to me because i love thinking about all the things my favorite characters did wrong

And more new fun things they could do wrong :)

"every character is someone's OC!" Is technically true, but the difference is that characters like Jimmy Mouthwashing, or Walter White or Makima are all characters that exist within like. A story that explores their roles as antagonists/anti-heros/unreliable narrators in their respective narrative, where as most people's OCs are their own barbie dolls that they can put in scenerios, which is all fine and dandy but I think it's a bit disingenuous to act like. The IDEA of a well written fully developed character is the same thing as a character that's actually fully developed.

Very often I'll see artists complain that their fanart is more popular than their oc content and I get that, but if you want random strangers who aren't close mutuals to be emotionally invested in your characters you need to like. Make a webcomic or visual novel or sometime so people have a reason to care about your homemade blorbos it sucks but there's a reason fanfic is so popular. Because as a writer you get to kind of.
