Not sure if people are still doing this; but these are my greatest hits of 2022! I’ve got a good feeling about 2023. 2022 has been cool and I grew a lot and challenged myself… but 2023 is when I’m gonna finish my @fantagraphics book and I’m so excited about that! My most proud moment of 2022 has to be putting on my own art show out of my San Diego Gaslamp apartment. It was so out of character for me to do something like that (almost) single-handedly, and it made me realize that I’m very capable of getting stuff done! I’ve always had low expectations of myself socially and putting on that show taught me those expectations were wrong. It was so much work, but I can’t wait to do it again! 🌷GUMMITULPAN 🌷 So excited about my involvement in this issue of @lystring_forlag ‘s comics anthology! The anthology is produced out of Sweden, so @lystring_forlag helped me translate my work into Swedish! It was really fun working in another language. The title of the series is “Gummitulpan” which means “Rubber Tulip”. So interesting how the Swedish translation is just one word! Anyway, here’s a few glamour shots with my copy, in front of my wall of in-progress @fantagraphics book pages… 🤠 The series of collaged comixxx featured in this anthology is an expansion of a series of mine printed in a recent issue of ATX’s Peach Fuzz Magazine. 🎃 Thought I’d post something a little different today! 🎃 I visited @sutinwalter last week in San Diego, and during my visit he got us pumpkins to carve! It was really fun. See what @sutinwalter carved in the last slide. For my pumpkin, I referenced a card from Lotería — a Mexican card game of chance. “La Tóxica” (The Toxic One) is a card featured in modern editions of the game (I think? I don’t know much about the game 😬). I’ve never played it before, I’ve just seen the imagery of the game used on pottery and other merchandise. Anyway, I haven’t carved a pumpkin since like 4th grade! So it was really fun. Very good for my inner child. It makes me sound really boring, but tbh, I’ve avoided celebrating holidays (even my birthday lol) for the past like 5+ years. I don’t talk to most of my family, so it’s been easy to skip all that. But I’m realizing how important it is to commemorating the passage of time. It’s wholesome stuff. It makes you feel good. Anyway, now that I’m back in Texas, I’m back to work on my @fantagraphics book! Plucking away! It’s gonna feel so so so good when it’s all done. Collab with @sutinwalter 🧠✨🧠 We finished this a month or so ago while I was still in San Diego. It turned out really nice! We made this by sitting side by side and periodically switching places. Neither of us had ever collaborated that way before, so it was a really fun adventure! There wasn’t a whole lot of planning involved, we just sort of attacked the paper haha. Swipe to see details! The piece tells the story of Walter giving me COVID (lol) right before I had planned on starting my road trip, moving to Texas. My lease was up, so I ended up staying at his place for a month or so to recover. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise because we got to know each other really well and had a lot of fun! COVID love story lol. In other news, I’m back in Texas now, but I’m planning on returning to San Diego for a bit. I’ll be back in town on ~October 7th, so if anybody wants to hang, lemme know!
