How to Make Custom Eyes for a 2012 Furby

When I was making my long Furby I couldn’t find any resources for making a custom 2012 Furby. I figured out how to make eyes for them so I figured I would share it!

Supplies:

+Epoxy Stickers 1 inch clear (For bottle cap pendants) I have linked ones that are perfect!

+Paper. I would recommend using thicker paper. I used paper from a Canson Mixed Media pad.

+Art supplies for painting or drawing the eyes. I used acrylic paints. 

+A popsicle stick.

+Hot Glue Gun. I personally used a pretty low temperature one. I don’t know if one of a higher temperature would mess with the stickers, Furby parts, etc… I would test this in a well-ventilated area first. 

+Optional: Matte Varnish, or whatever kind of Varnish you want to use. I used watered down Liquitex Basic Acrylic Matte Varnish.

Instructions:

1. Design the eyes for your Furby! You can be realistic or do whatever you want!

2.  Trace an epoxy sticker twice. The ones I linked on Amazon are the perfect size to fit in the 2012 Furby faceplate!

3. Draw whatever design you decided on the circles

4. Color them! (You could also add glitter or whatever you want. Just make sure it doesn’t stick up too much or the epoxy sticker won’t fit nicely.

5. Stick on the Epoxy sticker! Make sure to press it down so there aren’t any air bubbles! Make sure to get the sticker centered so it doesn’t look off.

6. Cut them out!

7. Now take apart your Furby. Make sure to take out any batteries and turn it off. You will be dealing with wires and mechanical bits. Make sure to be careful. You will need a screwdriver and I would recommend wearing eye protection just in case. No one wants to lose an eye making a Furby. It will be hard to explain to doctors and family.

When you take apart a 2012 Furby faceplate you should have 4 parts. The mechanical bits will be useless to you. As if you do it this way it cannot move or work.

8. Now what you are going to do is take the clear eye cover. Fit the eyes that you have made onto them. Make sure you get them in the correct position. I had to redo it several times to make sure they matched.

9. Once you are sure they are how you want them to break a popsicle stick big enough that it goes across the two eye chips and connects them. I would recommend having two popsicle sticks to keep them in place. Now check to make sure that the eye chips completely cover the clear eye cover from the outside so you can’t see into the Furbies head through the eyes. They should be the perfect size if you use the linked stickers or ones of the same size. Make sure they also are going the same way. If you have asymmetrical eyes this is crucial. For instance, if they have eye shines or other details you don’t want them to be in different positions. 

10. Once you are sure you are happy hot glue the popsicle sticks in place. Then hot glue the connected eyes to the clear cover. While doing this check constantly to make sure they haven’t moved or messed up. 

11. Set this aside to dry. Do any painting you want to do to the faceplate, eye plate, or eyelids. If you are painting the outside of the Furby I would recommend painting the inside as well. The color inside will be visible from the outside in small areas around the eye. You may need to do multiple layers to accomplish what you want. If you wish to paint the beak/mouth do know that it is impossible to paint most of the inside without taking the mouthpieces apart. I did not do this as I did not think I could put it back together. I just painted the outside and the “lips”. When I got paint on the tongue I used a pick to carefully chip off the paint without damaging it. 

12. This step is completely optional! I varnished the plates and eyelids, you don’t have to do this. If you do this let it dry before moving on.

13. Now hot glue the eyelid to the eye plate. The eyelid goes on the outside of the eye plate. Make sure to position this the way you want. Wait for it to dry.

14. Screw the eye plate back onto the faceplate. Make sure everything is in position how you want and nothing has been damaged. Everything should be together except for the clear eye cover and the eyes you made. Since if you did it this way and there are no mechanical bits. They will be unable to move. You can leave the mouth alone (what I did) or you could hot glue it in place. For simplicity, I am calling the two plates put together the head plate

15. The clear eye cover has a front side that is rounded. It will go into the head plate so the rounded bits peak out. The bottom of the clear eye cover has a straight line. While the top has an indent in it/ it goes down. Make sure to plate it so the bottom faces towards the beak. Basically top goes on top, bottom on bottom. It should look something like this:

16. Place the eyes you made in the head plate. Make sure to place them the same way you did before. Make sure they look how you want them to. What I did to check this was hold it in place with one hand holding both the eyes in position and the head plate. Then pick it up. Make sure to not move them. Even the slightest movement can make it look off. 

17. Now hot glue the eyes and clear eye cover in place. You can do the checking method mentioned above to check. Now, this is another reason I used a relatively low-temperature hot glue gun. If they move out of place you can just use your fingers to move them back. As well as hold them in place. If you have a low temp hot glue gun I would recommend using that. If not good luck I don’t know a good strategy for gluing that. If you messed up and used thick paper you should be able to remove the eyes from the Furby. If not and you messed up or the eyes were damaged. You can make new ones. The bits hot glued together were (for me) easy to remove from each other. It just takes some effort and strength while being careful. It should look something like this after drying:
