Zuko painted his skin red each night with the even strokes of a prayer.
This was no Blue Spirit of the Deep Waters. This was Zuko and his rage. Zuko and his shame. Zuko and the cloak he donned in honor of the legend of a woman who covered her scars in paint and turned her grief into light.
Drenched in red and covered in shadows, the Painted Ghost bends lightning and flame in search of retribution.
This is Zuko's character design in Imperfect Canvass, a role reversal AU.
Here I am, pushing the Jian Li (Akai Kotou! Zuko) = Jinshi (The Apothecary Diaries) agenda.
Akai Kotou â Chapter V: Nothing To Fear
Read here!
.
âSo...who is he?â
âThe, uh, the one in charge of taking care of Appa. And Momo. I think.â Katara fiddles with her braid and looks away. She tries not to choke when saying his name. âJian Li.â
The boys tilt their heads in question.
I will not blush I will not blush I will notâ
âThe golden-eyed boy.â
Sokka groans and smacks his face against the tatami. âWhy am I not surprised?â
Time blindness is the weirdest aspect of executive dysfunction and so weird as an experience to live with. Itâs like you see the clock, the clock says 3pm, you look at the clock again and itâs 3:02, then 3:05, and then you look again and itâs 8pm and WHAT THE FUCK.
You donât even need hyperfocus. But hyperfocus is like the Warp Speed:tm: version cause when that hits, itâs 3pm and then itâs the next day and why is the sun rising and when did i last eat and oh god i need to use the bathroom. And oh, also, youâre EXHAUSTED. The act of your brain tunnel visioning on something drains you (but thatâs another topic).
Time blindness isâŚ. having the general knowledge that today is Wednesday, and you need to do something on Thursday. Thursday is logically tomorrow, but the mysterious void of time is like âthatâs like next week or something.â Itâs knowing you have to do something in three weeks on the 21st. And as the days creep closer, the 21st is stuck in a constant state of still being 3 weeks away, despite the fact itâs now tomorrow.
Itâs wild. ADHD is literally living in a constant state of âThere is Now. And there is Later.â and thereâs no in between; no dates, no times; no hours, weeks, or months. Itâs just Now and Later, and oh god why is is X oâclock already!?
Maybe I DO have ADHDâŚ.
god, no oneâs ever succeeded at describing this for me before.
I spent 2 weeks ânot worryingâ about prepping for an upcoming class because it was still 3 weeks away and didnât really realize it wasnât 3 weeks anymore until Wednesday the week before the class began, then spent 3 days scrambling around to get all the prep work done.Â
This is a really accurate description of this really bizarre and inconvenient piece of ADHD.Â
Writing a novel when you imagine all you stories in film format is hard because thereâs really no written equivalent of âlens flareâ or âslow motion montage backed by Gregorian choirâ
You can get the same effect of a lens flare with close-detail descriptions, combined with breaks to new paragraphs.
Your slow-motion montage backed by a Gregorian choir can be done with a few technques that all involve repetition.
First is epizeuxis, the repeating of a word for emphasis.
Example:
Falling. Falling. Falling. There was nothing to keep Marie from plunging into the rolling river below. She could only hope for a miracle now, that she would come out alive somehow despite a twenty-foot drop into five-foot-deep water.
Then thereâs anaphora, where you write a number of phrases with the same words at the beginning.
There were still mages out there living in terror of shining steel armor emblazoned with the Sword of Mercy.
There were still mages out there being forced by desperation into the clutches of demons.
There were mages out there being threatened with Tranquility as punishment for their disobedience, and the threats were being made good upon.
Mages who had attempted to flee, but knew nothing of the outside world and were forced to return to their prison out of need for sustenance and shelter.
Mages who only desired to find the families they were torn from.
Mages who only wanted to see the sun.
This kind of repetition effectively slows the pace of your writing and puts the focus on that small scene. Thatâs where you get your slow pan. The same repetition also has a subtle musicality to it depending on the words you use. Thatâs where you get the same vibe as you might get from a Gregorian choir.
Damn I made relatable reblog- bait post and writer Tumblr went hard with it. This is legitimately very good advice.Â
For more neat tricks (aka figures of rhetoric) like epizeuxis and anaphora, read THE ELEMENTS OF ELOQUENCE by Mark Forsyth. Itâs both educational and delightful, not to mention overflowing with wry wit. Great book.Â
Holy shit.
These sound like techniques for making prose have more in common with poetry, or even with music. I just put the book on hold at the library!
Iâd also like to recommend The Sentence Is A Lonely Place by Gary Lutz if youâre interested in poetics (that is, clever lyrical writing techniques like these)

For magic improvements on thing that is already perfect:
Use one spoon white sugar, and one spoon brown if you have it.
After microwave, before noms, add vanilla ice cream.
\o/
salt is a flavour enhancer, add just a tiny dash, not enough to make it salty.
Because I love you all.
reblogging cause i need to save this
A note for those who have trouble measuring butter with a spoon as I do: one cup I am sixteen tablespoons. Butter/margarine bricks are usually a half a cup, so just cut one eighth of that amountÂ
These are really good! And yes, for the love of god, if you have it use white sugar and brown sugar, add just a pinch of salt, and as many chocolate chips as you darn well please. Great with icecream, whipped cream on top, or a tall glass of milk (keep in mind you gotta eat it with a spoon, you canât dip it in milk)Â
Super college friendly (trust me)
per being college-friendly, if you donât want to go buy ingredients and/or have a cramped living situation:
most restaurants have sugar packets, and i thiiink Starbucks has brown sugar sometimes too. guesstimate from someone who does a lot of baking, about four standard packets should be a tbspn
restaurants also have salt, McDonaldâs usually has it in packets. donât dump a whole packet in, just a dash
individually wrapped butter pats are usually a âfancyâ restaurant staple, so idk your economic situation at that point, but if you see'em, snatch'em. two to three of these, depending on size, is a tbspn
vanilla is expensive these days, but the flavor is 100% essential. teeny-tiny bottles exist in most grocery stores, a good size for mug recipes
ofc flour doesnât come free, but it too is often sold in small packages in many stores, usually cheap
store brand chips, or check for lowered prices on baking ingredients around/after holiday season (Iâve gotten some nice Ghirardelli products during holidays)
egg
um, yeahâŚ
Now I wanna make thisâŚ. đ¤¤
