Y - A character I want to protect: Well, Virgil for sure--you can tell from basically any fic I've ever written I definitely have a soft spot for him. But I also have a soft spot for Patton and Janus. My favorite story I wrote was Second Chance and I will Protect that adorable family forever.

And of course Starved is an absolute favorite, I reread it every so often and I love it to pieces!!!

Another is the one where Virgil makes Mrs. Fancy Fangs! Roman being in awe of his creation makes me so SOFT and just- aaksjahdhjfgd

Aah yeah that was me, one of my untitled drabbles I think! Thank you!! And yeah Mrs Fancy Fangs...that one was fun to write. I think i took out so me of my own pent up creative frustration on that one because there are SO MANY times I feel like I'm gonna make one thing and something totally different plops out. Like excuse you, that is NOT what I wanted to do, but fine. LOL

I LOVE how you describe both the winter cabin and the living room after the other Sides decorated it. There are so many parallels, such as the ice skating figures on the mantle (albeit not moving in the living room), the crackling fireplace, and of course the trees. However, the cabin seems to have more of a superficial feeling of Christmas cheer, if that makes sense? From the music playing from the walls, to the overzealous decorations, it feels like a scene from a Christmas commercial or a movie. Virgil even describes it as “Santa’s workshop”, giving the beauty of the scene more of a manufactured feeling.

It doesn’t feel real, both because it’s a little bit too perfect and because Virgil doesn’t get to experience it himself. He can only look through the window, like someone seeing a display case in a shop for ginger bread houses or Christmas ornaments.

The living room, however, is described as if “Christmas came and had babies over every available surface”. It’s ostentatious and extra, sure, but it’s MESSY. The ice figurines no longer move, the decorations are almost haphazardly strewn about (but no less beautiful), and the tree is so big it had to be crammed into the corner.

It feels like a real family Christmas filled with laughter and cookies and a mess of icing-covered plates and empty mugs that once contained hot chocolate. It feels warm and cozy, much more than the cabin. It’s amazing how you can convey so much emotion just from describing the scene. It’s honestly a gift.

This ask is a gift!!! I always had this tiny little bit of doubt about the decision to make Roman destroy the cabin. There was this part of me that wondered if it was cruel that Virgil never actually got to experience it. Virgil in the story didn't seem to mind, but I always had my little shred of doubt.

This comment actually just resolved that for me because you're right: this was having Christmas at HOME. It was real. It felt like they stayed up all night tacking up garland by hand, not as if Roman wavy-hands magicked it because it was in the imagination (which they did). It was an actual celebration that took work and effort and love to create, not just a bit of magic and a commercial idea of what hte holiday should look like (as you said, very much a Christmas display through a window). Yeah they liked the cabin fine, but...they liked it the way you like a fancy hotel. Nice to visit, but not the same feeling of accomplishment as, say, renovating your own actual home or something, if that makes sense.

Probably the scene that comes to mind first is after Virgil sees the others in the cabin and he starts walking back. The sky erupts in colors as an Aurora Borealis lights his way, and how he barely gave the lights a glance of acknowledgement to make sure they weren’t dangerous. It really cemented how Virgil thought that his only place is to experience beauty and wonder from afar, because as Anxiety, he didn’t deserve such things.

It’s such a beautiful fic. I could probably gush about it for hours tbh lol

That is a really cool analysis--that actually kind of floored me, because you're totally right, I think, that is sort of his approach to that event--like all he gets to do is assess things for danger but appreciating them for their beauty isn't his job so he's not allowed to do so (obviously or why wouldn't they have invited him along?). But like...I never thought about it quite like that but that's so cool?????

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in January and I'm really hoping toget away from my family and find a good support system

(I've been in pain most my life but I thought it was normal so I never spoke up)

Also honorable mention to Virgil and Roman in, I forget the name, the laugh one, when Roman's waxing poetic about Virgil's laugh, it's a delightful scene and it stood out.
